"Out of the Box'  traveling trunks have been created by the Corry Area Historical Society, Inc. and Edinboro University students in conjunction with Erie Yesterday, Edinboro University, and the Erie Community Foundation and are available for use in Corry, PA and the surrounding area.  The trunks consist of materials designed for use with a mathematics lesson about railway spikes, an infographics technology lesson, communication and the railroad lesson, comparing and contrasting three maps of Corry (1870, 1895, and present day) lesson, and an oil connection lesson. All necessary materials are included in the wooden traveling trunks. If you borrow a trunk, it is understood that you agree to the listed conditions. There is no rental fee to use the trunks. Each trunk may be reserved for a three-week period. Your trunk is not reserved until you receive a confirmation by e-mail. Teachers and groups are responsible for returning all the items in the trunks. Some of the items are expensive and take time to replace. Each trunk contains an inventory list. You should check and make sure that everything on that list is in the trunk before returning it. If a trunk comes back to the museum without items, the individual who borrowed the trunk is responsible for replacing the items. Normal wear and tear is expected and the teacher will not have to replace any worn items.  Returning the trunk in a timely manner is also important. If the trunk is returned late, then the next scheduled teacher or group will receive the trunk late. Please be considerate of others and return the trunks on time! If there are multiple teachers or users at one location who want to use a trunk, we will allow them to reserve a trunk together for two three-week periods. Please indicate this on the reservation form. For obvious reasons, we cannot allow a trunk to stay at one site for more than six weeks. If multiple users are using a trunk, the person who initially borrows a trunk might want to make sure that each teacher is passing on the trunk with all materials intact, as the original borrower is responsible for the trunk. Home school teachers may also reserve the trunks, as well as community groups. We request that users fill out the evaluation forms that are included in the trunk.

Trunk 1: All Aboard!
Intended grade levels: Gr. 3- 5
A. Students will gain an appreciation for the development of the railway by determining a specified length of track and computing how many spikes were necessary to complete the section of rail.  Maps, rulers, and miniature ties and rails are included.
B. This technology lesson details the steps necessary to complete a digital display of pertinent information of the Climax Locomotive.  A CD of photographs and informative text is included.

Trunk 2: Climax Locomotive
Intended grade levels: Gr. K, 1
A. Students will place lowercase letters wheels to its uppercase match on a train.
B. Students will identify differences and similarities of the Climax locomotive located at the Corry Area Historical Society’s museum and other trains.
C.  Taking a ride on the “Math Train” throughout the classroom will enable students to use concrete representation to solve addition and subtraction problems.
D. Students will learn basic shapes in order to create a train based on the Climax Engine.

Trunk 3: Home of the Climax Engine and the Railroad Experience
Intended grade levels: Gr. 3-5
A.  Students will compare and contrast three maps (1870, 1895, and 2011) on a Venn diagram as well as creating their own map.
B. Students will sort items into two categories (containing oil, not containing oil) and then build an oil derrick.  There is also a listening center for discovering what working on an oil field sounds like.
C. Students will design and build their own signaling device and use it to send messages.
