The English Department at Webster Groves High School is proud to host the All Write festival, an annual writers festival for our 1,400 students. During this week, a variety of writing professionals visit WGHS for a one-of-a-kind learning experience that truly inspires student creativity.
The recent 2019 All Write festival was a huge success! WGHS students were wowed by champion slam poets Ashlee Haze and Alex Luu; bestselling YA novelists Robin Talley, Kara Thomas, and Chris Crutcher; award-winning poet Tongo Eisen-Martin; documentary filmmakers Catherine Dudley-Rose and Lori Miller; songwriters Nick Gusman, Hannah Lieb, Beth Bombara, Nato Caliph, and The Might Pines; graphic novel illustrator Gareth Hinds; rock 'n' roll biographer Peter Ames Carlin; and many, many more!
Throughout the festival, our visiting writers instill the art of writing, the value of reading, the power of words, the intellectual pursuit of ideas, and the humanity of shared experiences, thereby inspiring countless numbers of our students to write, to think, to learn, and to carry these skills and principles into the world.
This is a truly innovative, cross-curricular educational experience! Students with many passions and talents are key leaders in every aspect of All Write. Interns and pages help run the festival, serving as greeters, hosts, stagehands, runners, and merchandise salespeople. The AMPED classes design and print our t-shirts. The Foods classes and the coffee shop plan and host The Notepad, the hospitality room for our visiting guests. Students from the Art, Music, and Drama departments serve as artisans, buskers, and playwrights for our assemblies.
We are already looking ahead to the 2020 All Write festival. Our planning committee of English teachers relies solely on grants and generous donations from local businesses and community members to ensure that this celebration of the arts lives on at WGHS.
