Amber in the Moment Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 191 ratings

Nominated for the Media Ecology Association's Mary Shelley Award for Outstanding Fictional Work.
SUMMARY
When unrelated thoughts burst into his mind, a Customer Service Representative finds that he has been selected as the conduit of a famous author’s final novel as well as become the target of a sociopath with extraordinary means.
Nearing the end of his life, Vonnegut volunteered to participate in a secret Thought Transfer Experiment. Given his age, he believed it would help him write his final novel more quickly. The Experiment stored his thoughts in bubbles that were unable to be decoded until a much later time. Those in the future had to send the bubbles into the psyche of an unsuspecting individual who had lived within ten years of the Thought Transfer experiment. The protagonist must rise to the challenge of having his mind bombarded with Vonnegut’s final novel as well as evade the grasp of a maniacal, billionaire sociopath who has selected him for termination.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is a labor of love that is devoted to one of the greatest American authors of the 20th century.

About the Author

As the work is pseudo-autobiographical, it is difficult to say much about the author without taking from the story. I leave it to the reader to better understand this upon completion of the text.

I would like to place a biography here, but I fear that doing so will take from the content of the book, which has an autobiographical nature to it. Read the book, and I think you will agree. In addition, the book has a few "errors," but such grammar and spelling issues are a part of the plot.

For anyone who doesn't see the difference between KURT Vonnegut and KIRK Vonnegut (a one-time pen name), you deserve what you get. It's true this is not as good as KURT's actual work, but it's still very, very good.

I've read all of Kurt Vonnegut's novels, all of his novels, once each decade for the past five decades, beginning with the first time I read "Breakfast of Champions" in 1978, when I was 12yo. I loved the audacity of that asterisk and the other drawings!

Last year, in my mid-50s, I read them all in order of publication. Then I read his short fiction, which I don't like nearly as much. As in previous decades, I was incredibly sad when I finished the last of his work. That's when I bought this, plus the Vonnegut Encyclopedia and the graphic novel version of Slaughterhouse-Five. I read the last one, then let it settle.

Reading this homage over the past week, it was like having a cup of coffee with an old friend, telling me stories I've heard many times before, but changing the names and some of the details, probably out of senility if nothing more.

I expected much less from this book, yet this was a lovely reading experience for me. If you're reading this, Kirk, or whoever you are, I would happily buy and read more of these "in the style and voice of Kurt Vonnegut" types of novels.

In the meantime, thank you for writing this one.

The whole premise of the story is intriguing. The various subplots are interwoven, the inclusion of a beloved (to me) American author and references to his works is engaging. This was a free Kindle book. I was lured in by the author's name which I read as Kurt Vonnegut. What a brilliant ploy! I was perturbed at first that so many familiarities of Kurt's writing style had obviously been plagiarized, but by the end of the book my thought was: brilliant! There were a few editing errors such as misspellings, wrong word tense, but overall an enjoyable story. And Kirk Vonnegut is the pen name for.......

Amber in the Moment is light and humorous read – it is hard to put the book down! The homage is relevant and successful. It continues Vonnegut's tradition in a way that honors the author and gives his fans both closure and comfort. Most pressing issues in our contemporary reality are addressed – from obesity to consumerism to violence to gay rights to racism. Also there are intriguing references to modern culture – music and lyrics especially, as well as thorough knowledge of the country – culturally and geographically. The banters are hilarious, the dialogues original and clever. I would definitely recommend the book - it is worth your time and money!

I have read almost all Vonnegut novels including Kurt's son Mark's true story of his journey with schizophrenia. This one did not grab me initially, but after putting it down and reading another book, I returned to it and finished it. All in all my review is "not his best work" and looks something like this. 📒😕 🆗

I started reading because I thought it was Kurt Vonnegut. It was not. It was a lie. Like you, I hate being lied to.
