- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI just finished reading Doug Probst’s powerful new book, Mayotte: The Musings of a Narcissist, by musician, songwriter and model Doug Probst. It’s a searing, brutally honest, no-holds barred autobiographical memoir that chronicles his tumultuous and abusive early family life, the abuse he endured in Catholic Boys homes and how at seventeen he finds himself alone and having to survive on the streets of Long Beach in 1982. He so eloquently writes about the dawning of the AIDS crisis (before it even had a name). A talented musician and songwriter, he writes about some of the great musicians he met and worked with including Billy Preston, Neil Young, Dan Hartman, James Ingram and many others I especially loved his amazing story about his first concert he ever attended at The Long Beach Arena, Aerosmith and AC/DC where he recalls Bon Scott carrying Angus Young on his shoulders through the crowd and how they stopped right in front of his seat and played in the aisle. He recalls how it was a life changing moment. Of his love for music, he says “Some say music helps them cope with the fear of dying. For me, music helped me cope with the terror of living”
Though many of the experiences he went through are emotionally wrenching, he often writes about them with great sardonic humor. In the book he tells the powerful story of how in 2007, as one of the lead spokespersons in the Los Angeles County Child Sexual Assault Case against the L.A. Catholic Archdiocese. The story centers around a meeting that he had with Archbishop Cardinal Roger Mahony when the negotiations were stalled. He writes “When Mahony said, “I don't know what to do, Doug — we don't have the money,” I answered, “Sell the cathedral that you're building. Aren't our lives worth more?” he asks Mahony while tears are streaming down his face but Mahony was unmoved. He then writes “I felt like joking, “Well, if you won't give us anything, will you at least validate my parking?” Three days later, they settled with us for $660 million dollars. I take pride in that my argument with him was slightly responsible,
It’s this kind of honesty and in your face writing that makes the book so compelling and such a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a sad and brutally honest book written by Doug Probst about his life. Much of it is about Shawn Mayotte who was a well know porn actor. At least that’s where I knew of him. Tan and very attractive surfer looking dude who was in a couple of VHS tapes a couple of my friends shared with me.
The book is woven from pieces of a shattered boyhood, parents who abused him, institutions which failed him and his of scary headlong journey into near self destruction. He called these bits and pieces of his fractured life - musings of a narcissist. Doug Probt and Shawn Mayotte are the same person leading rather different and similar lives.
I never met Shawn or Doug in person. I knew a few of his friends vicariously from their work in the porn industry and in person when I lived in Boston and NYC doing photography for various magazines catering gay communities.
The book starts with Shawn hustling to make it in a hostile world of shunned kids living on the streets of various communities in California. People are dying to have sex but don’t know or grasp it. Yet.
Shawn navigates the maze of money, fame, and a silent killer called Aids when it finally got a name the pubic could use.
Bits and pieces of Doug’s ruined childhood are woven through musings of Shawn’s relentless need for approval and money and those stories are woven in a manner which is shocking and sad and sometimes brutal and tender at the same time. The squirm factor is abundant with Doug’s incredibly nasty and abusive parents. I was relieved that the book included his father’s death.
Doug includes some the people in his life of music industry and song writing. I’m less familiar with some of those references than the actors in his early life. The musings are poignant and part of his rather difficult navigation into adult life.
This is a book which is well worth the time and effort to read. It’s a terrific book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Cannot Recommend More Highly
What I generally consider to be a ‘’Good Read’’ invariably includes the trashy mémoire of an actor/model/hustler/gogo-boy from the Adult Industry, of which I have read countless. I therefore presumed when I picked up Mayotte: Musings Of A Narcissist, that it would be a familiar tale which follows the typical route? WRONG!!! For the reader, it is akin to riding a roller-coaster with no safety bar, hence, I fell out of my seat numerous times. No spoilers, but I cannot recommend this book more highly. 5 shiny Gold Stars is the maximum I can rate on here, but in truth, without a doubt, I’d bestow upon it infinitely more… Enjoy!
