Poems from the Asylum (2021) - Martha H. Nasch

The true story of the woman who would not eat, drink, or sleep for seven years...
After noticing something strange from a secret medical procedure in 1927, St. Paul, Minnesota, Martha Nasch's doctor claimed she just had a "case of nerves." With a signature from her adulterous husband, Martha was committed against her will to the asylum. She spent nearly seven years in the Minnesota hospital during the Great Depression and tried to escape twice. Martha's poems from behind bars include shocking eyewitness accounts of patient treatment and a long-suffering adoration for her only child, now being raised alone by her deceiving spouse. When not a soul believed Martha's story, she sought an explanation for her mysterious condition that led her to a spiritual answer for the mystifying curse. Would her findings make her a metaphysical guru of the Breatharian lifestyle, or would she become the laughingstock of her Depression-era family?
The biography includes a full anthology of harrowing and insightful poems written by Martha Hedwig Nasch, patient-inmate #20864 at the St. Peter State Hospital for the Insane.
Editing and arrangement by Martha's great-granddaughter, Janelle Molony, with an introduction by Jodi Nasch Decker, granddaughter. More than fifty photographs and illustrations are included with the historical research that accompanies this beautifully preserved collection of poems.

Professional Reviews
"A satisfactory read ... for historians, poetry lovers, [and] mental health workers." (Beth Zabel, St. Peter State Hospital Museum)
"A true honor to Martha's life and legacy. So many people tried to break her ... but she was a master old soul with a fighting spirit. Writing poetry saved her sanity." (Michelle A. Cox-Lomas, Ph.D., Psychologist)
"Martha's story restores dignity and self-respect ... to so many women diagnosed with a mental illness." (Mary Ann Lancette Palumbo, Genealogist and Saint Paul, Minn. Historian)
“The escape that her words provided her is now able to give her readers an insight into different worlds.” (Lit Reviewer, New University, CA)
“An interesting exploration of this family, its dynamics, psychiatric care at the time, and so much more. … In many ways her poems fit nicely in the modernist movement ... mirroring a stream of consciousness style but with rhyme.” (Serena, SavvyVerseAndWit)

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2023Absolutely a wonderful story. Shared with my family and friends. They also thought it was a great read. I grew up in St. Peter and my mother worked at the State Hospital, so this story is very special to us. Highly recommend!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2022First, I did buy this book off of Amazon and it should show as a verified purchase. Poems from the Asylum contains the truest story about a woman who was splayed all over the U.S. as a freak show, but she kept her chin up and insisted on her personal truth despite long-lasting consequences and social pressures to cave in. She was a woman who remained steadfast in the asylum for years and used her time wisely to write on important and necessary mental health reforms, women's rights, and more. Some of her writing is absolutely heartbreaking and can bring up emotional challenges. There is a reader warning on page one that you need to take seriously. That being said, it is easy enough to flip around to the different sections in the book that are interesting to you and avoid or skip over the other content. The best part of this story is how Martha has been given the platform she deserves to finally be heard and understood without interference.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2022I loved how carefully the author researched & discussed the precursors to Asylum placement (both evidenced and speculated), and how hard they worked to research & connect little threads of information contained in each of the poems. The included maps and connection to neighbors provided a context that made this story come alive in a way historical research usually struggles.
It broke my heart to realize how easily Asylum commitment was invoked, and how negatively it impacted her life & relationships even after she was released.
Disclaimer: this book was purchased by my husband for me as a gift. Neither of us were aware at the time that the author had credited me for an included photo of my great-aunt referenced in one of the poems (photo is publicly available on my Ancestry tree). That extra surprise made for a very meaningful gift.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2022I really enjoyed this book! It gives valuable insight for those who struggle with mental health as well as what others in their lives go through. There are always two sides to a story, and it's very intriguing to read both of them in this book. Martha's poems that were written while in the State Hospital for the Insane give readers an idea of what she went through from her perspective. And, it's clear to see she had a knack for expressing herself with her poetry.
