Spending the night in Juvie wasn't the worst thing to happen to seven year old Teresa that summer. When her much-anticipated cross-country vacation turns to abduction, Teresa is forced to care for her mother, sister and twin brothers. Homeless, abused, and afraid in the slums of San Francisco's Tenderloin district, Teresa finds joy in her adventures while fantasizing of a better life. Keeping this dream alive throughout her childhood is what drives her to end the cycle of abuse and poverty.
Review
♥ “In Dr. Teresa Van Woy’s memoir, Wildflower, a quote begins each chapter of her journey from destitute child with a maniacal mother to successful physician with a loving family. Reading about her dreaming of a happier life when it seemed like there was no way out of the cycle of abuse, brought to mind a quote I’d like to contribute from the classic song, The Quest: To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go.
As a little girl facing struggles most of us can never imagine, Teresa bravely allowed herself to dream when dreams seemed impossible. In doing so, she created a path to a life that’s now a testament to choosing positivity and envisioning possibilities. Today, the little girl from the streets of San Francisco, lives a loving, fulfilled life close to the very city she once wandered alone and lost.
Dr. Teresa Van Woy’s, Wildflower is a gripping account of triumph over adversity, and may inspire you to dream an impossible dream!”

Pushing hard into the pavement, I bolted past bums lying along the buildings, jumped over pieces of newspaper blowing in the breeze, and dodged all kinds of other trash as I sprinted after the bus. My lungs burned from the early morning chill, but that didn’t stop me. Nothing was going to stop me. A shout from the other side of the street broke my concentration. One of the bums, the scary kind who screams cuss words out loud. I shouldn’t have looked.

About the author

My heart has always been in San Francisco, the city I grew up in where my life was filled with one adventure after the other. I knew I wanted to come back to the Bay Area, and after completing my residency in Miami, that's exactly what I did. I found my dream home in the small town of Benicia where I live with my husband of 25 years, my 3 daughters, 2 dogs, 3 cats, and 2 chickens.
If I lived the life of my dreams, I'd be traveling the world, making YouTube videos. You know, the feel good type where I can randomly tip $1,000 to someone who showed kindness to me? That's my dream, and hopefully I can get there one day. One YouTube subscriber at a time! (Maybe after all 3 girls graduate from H.S.?)
In reality, I truly am living my dream. My dream as a child to become a physician. My dream of raising 3 amazing daughters. My dream of creating joy in my life by doing the things I love most... backpacking, camping, woodworking, and yes, world travel.
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy my book!

Gripping Account of Escaping Abuse

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you experienced childhood abuse, this book can be cathartic. It can also be triggering, hence why it’s so cathartic. It brought up feelings for me that I needed to process and work through as an adult. It was a fantastic book to read on my own healing journey. Teresa put into words very well regarding the guilt, shame, and responsibility that the abused carries. The fact that she always knew that she would be in charge of herself someday and she would do better, was her strongest survival mechanism. All abused children need to hang on to that. Thank you Teresa.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a sad story to have the memory for life of a disturbed mother who almost broke Teresa's will to live. Its so important for people to step in when they suspect a child is being abused. Had it not been for the family that took her in and took her out of the dangerous clutches of her mom her life might have taken a different turn! Kudos to Teresa and her supporters! I highly recommend this book that teaches us God created us with the internal resources to survive atrocities.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a tragic story, certainly because of the physical and emotional abuse, but more so for Teresa’s own fear of what other people thought of her. It is difficult to grasp the fact of an individual willing to suffer extreme abuse rather than let anyone around her know of the abuse. She did no favors for her mother by doing this nor for her siblings, whose to say they all may have ended better by receiving help earlier. IF her mother could have been helped but in my opinion she was an evil woman long glommed on to the evil one.
I gave 4 stars for the content but the format is more confusing than any book I have ever tried to read. Horrible story and shame on all her older siblings for not speaking out on her behalf. Thank God for the Marley family their Philia and agape love with their humanity warmed my heart they are great people. I feel sure teachers and others would have helped if Teresa would have stopped lying to them anytime a suspicion surfaced and an effort was made to help her. I am glad she is happy now.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI too grew up in an abusive household with an unpredictable and crazy mother. To this day, I struggle with saying nasty things to her or about her but I need to still unload my baggage. Often times, I wonder how different things could have been by living in a loving, normal household. Thanks Dr. Van Woy for your inspiring voice in this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf I had the hours, I would have read this in one sitting. I did not want to put this book down. Teresa shares her incredible story in such a way that I couldn't stop turning the pages. I cannot believe all that she has overcome. I will be recommending this book to everyone who enjoys a good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book tugged at my heartstrings and I’m grateful I read it. Even though I was completely heartbroken for Teresa, I love her desire to make life better for herself and others. I love her advice in the end. I love how people showed kindness to her in the simplest of ways- such as letting her slide down the banister in the fancy hotel. I LOVED the part about finding the “key to Cherokee.” I wish her dad would have fought more for all of his kids, especially Teresa and Josh. Surely he had to know about the abuse -and how could he not want to drive across the U.S., come hell or high water, to rescue his children? I’m baffled about that. I’m also amazed at her ability to see the good in her mother. What an example of triumph and strength!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis story just blows me away. The she tells it is so powerful that I felt like I was there watching over this precious child. I was never even spanked as a child, neither were my kids and neither are their kids so it’s just too unreal for me. I would have to put it down sometimes and try to absorb the horror. Love the way this story was told. Excellent writing. God Bless You…you are the most incredible person I have ever….I was going to say known. I guess it just feels like that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un libro fascinante / A fascinating book
I have just finished reading Wildflower by Dr. Teresa Van Woy. Her story is worth telling and Teresa has done so in an impressively well written book. The narrative takes us by the hand through surprise and disbelief as we witness injustice and cruelty, but also Teresa's determination and mental attitude channelled by an unwavering spirit of self-improvement, which never let her fall into victimhood.
I find particularly interesting the different relationships of the participants in the story, where it is not about binary feelings of love or hate but about joint and opposing dynamics where the emotions of the protagonists are manipulated by the extreme situations they have to live through, where bitterness is tempered by indulgent compassion, the instinct of protection for the suffering sister is replaced by the indifference of fear, where feelings of loyalty towards one's own tormentor stand in the way of one's own liberation. Dr Teresa Van Woy has managed to portray this complex interplay in a fascinating book.

I am the same age as Teresa and our childhoods couldn’t have been more different. I absolutely loved the book and love that Teresa was able to come out of it and share her powerful story. The book makes me even more greatful for the gift of my own mother.
