Stop One: Beijing

北京欢迎你!

The first place you are going to visit is Beijing.  It’s the capital city of the People’s republic of China, a world-renowned city of history and culture.  The Liao Dynasty made Beijing its alternative capital city since 938 AD. Later, Beijing became the capital of the Jin Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty and capital city of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.  After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Beijing was designated the country’s capital.

This is the new Beijing Airport. China built it specifically for the 2008 Olympic.

The Great Wall, one of the seven wonders of the world, was built to defend against nomadic invaders.  It is the largest piece of military defensive engineering in the world which took the longest time to be built, repaired, and extended.  Great Wall’s genesis dates back to 700 BC to 500 BC. It attracts tourists from all over the world. It was inscribed on the world cultural heritage list.

Now, let’s go to see the The Palace Museum in Beijing. The palace Museum in Beijing is the largest extant ancient architecture complex in China.  Lying in the center of Beijing, it used to be the abode of the MIng and Qing emperors, and was also called the Forbidden City.  The main entry point for the Palace Museum is the Meridian Gate, which you may see below.

The Temple of Heaven: As the largest alter temple compound in China, the Temple of Heaven was where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties offered sacrifices to heaven and prayed for a good harvest. In ancient China, the Temple of Heaven was considered a holy place where Emperors communicated with heaven.  Now it is a key cultural relic under state protection, and one of the symbols of Beijing.

The Summer Palace is the most intact imperial garden that has been preserved in China.  It’s a famous scenic spot located in the northwest suburbs of Beijing which integrates mountains and water into an ingenious whole.  It is a rare master piece of garden design in the world.
