Review
In the spirit of Catherine from *Wuthering Heights* and Bella from the *Twilight* saga, soon after the disastrous date with Mr. Sex Addict, Candace meets two great guys. One is nearly Mr. Perfect and is checking off more on her list as days go by and the other screams Mr. Not Perfect. Candace is about to fall and fall hard... but will she do it with the right one? It's a light read and certainly a happy one. I can picture it being made into a movie and featured alongside How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Runaway Bride. Totally different themes but the same spirit and certainly as entertaining. I love how it took a common idea that many women have (the list) and turned it into a sweet parody of that idea --*Love, Romance, Passion

About the author

Carmen Shirkey Collins is a multi-award-winning social media marketing professional who got her start as a copywriter. As a trained journalist, Carmen considers herself a storyteller more than anything else, and enjoys helping others transport themselves into someone else's experience through a good narrative.
She was raised in Staunton, Virginia, and grew up knowing that she was destined to be a Wahoo at the University of Virginia - where she studied Communication and History. She honed her writing skills as a sports editor for one of the two school newspapers. After graduating, she continued her creative pursuits as a writer, editor and marketer.
Carmen once opened a fortune cookie that said, "You will step on the soil of many countries." Her love of travel made that an easy life goal, and to date has been able to add over 25 countries to her passport.
She found true partnership and soul connection with her now-husband, Jim, who is her adventure partner and biggest fan. Together they've lived in North Carolina, Florida, and now back "home" in Virginia's capital city of Richmond with their cat - an orange tabby named Zucca (Pronounced Zoo-ka, which means "pumpkin" in Italian, inspired by their Sorrento honeymoon.) Together they dream of a European retirement full of train travel and good food - and documenting more stories.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was looking for a fun light book to read. This was not it. Vapid and self indulgent, this book doesn't have any redeeming value. Kind of like a mean girl from High School who thought her life was so interesting other people would care.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGotta love a girly book! A very good read! I feel like most girls have a list; a mental list at least, of what they want in a mate. It's funny how much importance we put on it when in the end, the list is thrown away.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2009Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI like to read while I'm exercising. For me a really good book is one where I'm so into the story I don't pay attention to the timer on the machine. Well this book is a really good book! I ended up so into the story that I exercised way past my usual time...now my legs are sore! Too bad I've finished, I could have lost another size! ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2011Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am such a fan of chick lit that I was thrilled to discover an actualy chick lit book that I had somehow overlooked.
The List is a "true" chick lit - in fact, the author acknowledges that her novel is all chick lit - which, of course, made me incredibly happy!
So, why the 3 star rating? The book is, unfortunately, a little bit boring AND incedibly predictable. In fact, I had the ending figured out by about page 20 of the book, which seriously removed the pleasure of reading the storyline for me.
Of course, chick lit is not known for its intricate plotlines, but this one was so basic and easy to figure out that it felt a little bit like an insult.
I did enjoy the various description of dates the main character went on - as anyone who has ever dated could certainly identify with this part of the book. The friendship with the 3 women was also fun, however, the rest of the book falls short on some level.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI couldn't even finish reading this one. I have read many many books in my lifetime and this was BY FAR not one of my favorites. Pretty boring, unfortunately...
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2009Format: PaperbackFrom "Hair in the right places in the right amounts"(item #6) to "Doesn't wear more jewelry than me" (item #36) Carmen Shirkey's Candace Saunders is certain she knows precisely what she wants in a man. But does she? Shirkey takes the reader on a comedic journey that begs one to examine one's own "must have" and "must not have" Mr/Ms Right list of conditions and characteristics. A light-hearted book that offers both self-examination and laughter.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2009Format: PaperbackCarmen Shirkey's The List is a quick read, but that's good - it's hard to put it down. It's the story of Candace, a girl all of us can relate to: she wants to fall in love, but she's been on so many bad dates she's getting discouraged. She decides making a list of the qualities she wants in a man is the best thing to do - that way, if a guy doesn't meet her criteria, she doesn't have to waste her time with him. Who out in Readerland hasn't done that, at least mentally?
Candace meets two guys, one that is so close to her list she's quickly enamored of him, and another, who just keeps failing her tests. As she navigates through her relationships with these two men, she learns a lot about herself and what kind of person she wants to be. When she finally figures herself out, the choice of who will have her heart is simple.
The author has a clear, brisk style of storytelling, and the book moves along well without any lulls or superfluous plot lines. The reader is able to identify with and root for Candace from early on, and the two heroes are interesting juxtapositions. Overall, this is a highly-entertaining novel from a promising new author.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2009Format: PaperbackI read "The List" while on vacation and really enjoyed it! I loved the concept and enjoyed reading about Candace's journey to find the perfect man, only to find out that being perfect isn't all it's cracked up to be. Definitely check out this light, sassy read that will leave you smiling!
