About the authors
Award winning author, Mr. Wilkin is a graduate in history. He has been writing in various genres for thirty years. Extensive study of premodern civilizations, including years as a re-enactor of medieval, renaissance and regency times has given Mr. Wilkin an insight into such antiquated cultures.
Trained in fighting forms as well as his background in history lends his fantasy work to encompass mores beyond simple hero quests to add the depth of the world and political forms to his tales.
Throughout his involvement with various periods of long ago days, he has also learned the dances of those times. Not only becoming proficient at them but also teaching thousands how to do them as well.
Mr. Wilkin regularly posts about Regency history at his blog, and as a member of English Historical Fiction Authors. You can read that blog at http://englishhistoryauthors.blogspot.com/ His very first article was published while in college, and though that magazine is defunct, he still waits patiently for the few dollars the publisher owes him for the piece.
Mr. Wilkin is also the author of several regency romances, and including a sequel to the epic Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. His recent work, Beggars Can't Be Choosier has won the prestigious Outstanding Historical Romance award from Romance Reviews Magazine.
A steadfast and proud sci-fi and fantasy geek, A. F. Stewart was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada and still calls it home. The youngest in a family of seven children, she always had an overly creative mind and an active imagination. She favours the dark and deadly when writing—her genres of choice being fantasy and horror—but she has been known to venture into the light on occasion. As an indie author, she’s published novellas and story collections, with a few side trips into poetry.

M. K. Wiseman has degrees in animation/video and library science – both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today, her office is a clutter of storyboards and half-catalogued collections of too, too many books. (But, really, is there such a thing as too many books?) When she’s not mucking about with stories, she’s off playing brač or lying in a hammock in the backyard of her Wisconsin home that she shares with her endlessly patient husband.
As editor-in-chief of Xchyler Publishing, Penny Freeman has collaborated with several authors, including R. A. Smith, Joanne Kershaw, and Candace J. Thomas. She also edited and wrote the preface to Forged in Flame: a Dragon Anthology, and Mechanized: Masterpieces a Steampunk Anthology. She penned the short story "Tropic of Cancer" under the pseudonym of Neve Talbot.
Penny engages her thirty years of wordsmith experience in historical fiction, journalism, and developmental editing. Literature, history and storytelling are her great passions, although the technical aspects of the language arts satisfy her compulsion for order.
She lives with her husband in southeast Texas.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am new to the world of Steampunk, but I do know good writing and a good story filled with surprises. Alyson Grauer has done both in her novella, Lavenza, or the Modern Galatea. I was drawn into the story from the first sentence. Elizabeth Lavenza knew her destiny from childhood and moved toward it with singular purpose. Victor, her friend from childhood and now her betrothed, went away to school and was never the same again. Elizabeth showed strength and courage in dealing with the Victor's inhuman creation and I couldn't put the book down. If you love Frankenstein, you will love this one! I must tell you I am a "senior" and this book is a great departure from my usual reading habits, though I did love Gothics when they were so popular years ago. Ah but Mechanized Masterpieces has made me look at Steampunk with new appreciation and forget my age. I rather like being "with it" and Alyson Grauer has shown me the way! I love the creativity of all the writers showcased in this book and I plan to read more of this genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTied to classics but never bound by them, this collection captivated me from page one. More than simply slapping on some gears and shrouding it in steam, the assembly of authors have done a fine job of making the story worlds and characters of the likes of Charles Dickens and Mary Shelley their own.
While familiarity with the old literature that inspired these works isn't necessary to enjoy the anthology, for the re-imaginings related to stories I already knew and loved in one form or another, looking for connections and creative deviations was half the fun. I likewise appreciated that the tales didn't get too bogged down with long, intricate descriptions of mechanical devices, leaving me free to get lost in the story instead of tangled up in wires.
Whether you're already a fan of steampunk or looking for a book to introduce you to the genre, I'll recommend "Mechanized Masterpieces" every time.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAny fan of whirring engines, fabulous contraptions and marvelous metal monstrosities will eat up this collection of 8 short stories, that take characters from classic tales and re-imagine them in new adventures in the world of steampunk! Ebenezer Scrooge, David Copperfield, Frankenstein and others make appearances in fantastic new stories of intrigue and mechanized mayhem. A special shout-out to to M.K. Wiseman's "The Clockwork Ballet", which posits The Phantom of the Opera as a master-tinkerer, creating a mechanical troupe of dancers to serve his twisted bidding. The book is worth it for this piece alone, in addition to the gorgeous cover.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys steampunk, good writing or a fresh take on beloved characters of old. Don't forget your safety goggles!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis collection of short stories was my first introduction to steampunk, and I loved it! I really enjoyed the reimagined takes on classic stories, and I found myself wishing I could read the whole original story from that perspective. I'd read more from any of these authors.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe first story in this book captured my attention from the very first. I could hardly put it down and can't wait to read on.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2013Format: KindleI got a free copy of Mechanized Masterpieces, in exchange for an honest opinion.
Honestly, its great if you love steampunk! All of the writers in this anthology share a fantastic skill in writing and scene setting, making for an engaging and oftentimes heart pumping read. If you are not a committed steampunk fan, however, you may be less forgiving of the minor plot flaws and contrivings. The degree and style of steampunk varies from story to story, as does the degree to which each is, or is not, based on or related to a great literary work, despite the claims. I will tell you that my favorite is 'Little Boiler Girl' and recommend reading this short first.
If you like Steampunk I bet you'll give it a 5/5 if not then probably a 3/5. I'm splitting the difference with a 4/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Anthology
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed reading this book with its intertextual allusions and reinterpretations of literary classics in a steampunk context.. The great thing about anthologies is the variety of storytelling approaches and writing styles, so every reader can find their own favourites. The stories resonating with me personally are 'Lavenza, or the Modern Galatea' by Alyson Grauer, which reinterprets a section of 'Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus' from the perspective of Victor's bride Elizabeth (a character which has always intrigued me because she seemed too good to be true), 'Tropic of Cancer' by Neve Talbot, which put s a new spin on the story Edward Rochester before his Jane-Eyre days, and 'Sense and Cyborgs', an exciting adventure story with hints of Sense and Sensibility.
