Terror by Night: The True Story of the Brutal Texas Murder That Destroyed a Family, Restored One Man’s Faith, and Shocked a Nation Hardcover – October 1, 2009
Terror by Night tells the compelling story of how Terry Caffey found peace after his wife and sons were brutally murdered and his teenage daughter implicated in the crime. Sharing never-before-told details about the night of the crime and subsequent murder trial, it explains how Terry was able to forgive the men who murdered his family, and how he even interceded with the prosecutors on their behalf. A powerful example of how the power of forgiveness can bring healing after tragedy and great loss, it shows how God can bring good out of even the darkest tragedies.

About the authors
James (Jim) Pence is versatile writer, published both in fiction, nonfiction, and textbooks. He began writing in 1987 as a means of processing his grief after the death of his one-week-old daughter Michelle. James broke into publishing in 2001 when Osborne/McGraw-Hill published How to Do Everything with HTML, a how-to book on Web authoring, written “by a non-techie for non-techies.” He followed this book later the same year with Cascading Style Sheets: A Beginner's Guide. A second edition of James's HTML book, retitled How to Do Everything with HTML & XHTML, was released in 2003 and is still available in Kindle format.
Also a fiction writer, James is the author of Blind Sight (Tyndale, 2003), a suspense/thriller set in the mind-control cults. Blind Sight tells the story of Thomas Kent, a reclusive ex-pastor who rescues two children from a cult and in the process finds his own redemption. James’s second novel, The Angel (Kregel, 2006), is set against the backdrop of the euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide movements. The Angel provides a chilling look at what can happen when society no longer values human life. It is also a compelling portrayal of one character’s struggle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. Both of James's novels were re-released in 2014 by Mountainview Books under the titles of Unseen and Mercy Killer respectively.
James moved into collaboration and narrative nonfiction with Terror by Night (co-authored with Terry Caffey, Tyndale, 2009). Terror by Night tells how Terry survived a horrific home invasion that left his wife and two sons dead, only to learn later that his 16-year-old daughter helped plan the murders. James followed up Terror by Night with More God, the story of Nate Lytle, a surfer who suffered a massive traumatic brain injury when he fell off a 10-foot ladder. The doctors told Nate’s parents that his injury was not survivable. But God had other plans. One year to the day after his accident, Nate was surfing again.
In 2011 James collaborated with bestselling author Stephen Arterburn on a novella titled The Encounter: Sometimes God Has to Intervene (Thomas Nelson, Nov. 2011). For this book, James was asked to develop a novella, set in Fairbanks, Alaska, based on two true incidents in Stephen’s life. The result is a story of one man’s quest to come to grips with his past and one woman’s desperate desire for forgiveness and grace.
James also works as a freelance editor. His most recent editing project, Beyond the Golden Door: Seeing the American Dream through the Eyes of an Immigrant, by Ali Master is set for a July 2, 2019 release by Morgan James Publishing.
A talented chalk artist, vocalist, and speaker, James has shared Christ across the United States through music and art, appearing in venues as large as the Anaheim Convention Center and as small as a family’s living room. James often takes his art and music into prisons, sharing the grace of Christ with a frequently overlooked and rejected people.
James graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2002 with a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies with an emphasis on creative writing. He lives in North Texas with Laurel, his wife of 39 years. They have two children and two grandchildren.
REVIEWS & ENDORSEMENTS:
Blind Sight – The author had me on the first page—first paragraph, actually—and never let go right up to the last word. I read it in 24 hours! (Kathi Macias, author of Deliver me from Evil)
The Angel – I had a hard time putting [The Angel] down—trite phrase, but very true. The plotting was tight, the characters well-drawn, and the story line gripping, with a great ending. As a physician, I was pleased to see all the medical details accurately depicted. (Richard L. Mabry, M.D., author of Diagnosis Death)
Terror by Night – Pence and Caffey do a phenomenal job of painstakingly recounting the details of the case, unpacking the emotional story in a thriller-like manner. It's not often that I can't put down a book, but this one kept beckoning me to turn the page well into the night. (Mary E. Demuth, author of The Muir House, Thin Places, Daisy Chain)
More God – Loved the book. I'm a surfer, so that's an added bonus. Even so, it is a great story of a man's faith in his God, his God's power, and the power of loving and supportive people. (Scott St. Onge, Amazon review)
The Encounter – Wow. It's 3 a.m. I considered going back to sleep, after waking up at one thirty for just a few more pages. I started reading this book this morning, well, yesterday morning, and just couldn't put it down. I even took it to the park, a walk, and in my truck to read between appointments…. The story, simple and of itself, presents as a mystery, people story—very gripping, pulls you in, fast paced—and urges you to want to know how it will turn out. (A. Acord-Wright, blogger)

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the true story of the brutal night that left Terry Coffey a widower, and he thought, a bereaved parent of three. Grievously injured, Terry lies in a hospital bed after suffering from no less than 5 gunshot wounds - one to the face. He hears the joyous news that his daughter Erin, 16, has somehow survived that horrific night that left his wife, Penny, and two sons, Matthew and Tyler, dead. Almost immediately, though, the joy is replaced by disbelief and shock as word comes that Erin has been arrested for her involvement in the attacks; indeed, she has been fingered as the mastermind of it all. What follows is much, much less about the crime committed by 4 young people whose only motivation was selfishness, and much more about the all-sustaining grace of God through unimaginable horror and tragedy.
After the deaths of his family and the virtual loss of Erin, Terry Coffey suffers not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. As a Christ-follower, Terry struggles mightily with the question that plagues all who experience great loss: Why didn't God step in and stop this horrific occurrence? The answer, as it always is, is that we (humans) don't know. God is much, much bigger than we can even fathom. He has plans inside of plans that stretch from eternity to eternity. We can't even conceive the concept of eternity to eternity, but God sees it ALL and knows everything that ever has or ever will happen. We cannot know how the life of Terry Coffey, or the loss of Penny, Matthew, and Tyler Coffey will change the life of a total stranger who hears of it - or how it may change the lives of those intimately involved in the case. We just don't know - and that is the hardest part of understanding God's love and His grace, because we want to know why. Anyway, Terry pulls through with a great deal of faith and the unwavering support of a fantastic group of people including his in-laws, friends, and church family.
Blessed by God with a new family, Terry likens himself to Job, who lost everything in the Bible. Just like Job, Terry was restored by the growth of his faith through this horrible time. Am I saying it was "good" that Penny and the boys died? That Erin was involved in it? No, of course not. BUT, God works for good, so there is good found in many aspects of this tragedy.
This book *was* written very soon after this tragedy occurred. Even now it's only been about 3 years; hardly enough time for the ink to dry on the case files. I, too, would love to see an update from Terry in 10 years or so. I believe, though, that he will be OK, no, that he will thrive, because he has accepted that God's unending grace doesn't mean that bad (very, very bad) stuff won't happen, but it does mean that He will be with us every step of the way. You can, by the way, keep up with how he's doing via his ministry page. I don't have the address right offhand, but just Google his name and it will come up.
One thing I am not sure about - and I invite commentary about - is the true level of Erin's involvement. I think, from the record of her "total" confession conversation with Terry, that she still absolves herself of much of the blame for the attacks. In no way, however, do I believe that this girl sought out people who were possessed of entirely innocent motives and convinced them to murder her family. I think she was a frustrated, angsty teen who complained about her parents not "getting her" and "sometimes I wish they were dead" so she could live her own life. The Lord knows I complained enough about my dad who never "got" me when I was a teenager, and while I don't think I ever wished him dead, I certainly wished he would "go away" enough times! ;- I think then, her much too old boyfriend and his buddy thought they would "solve" Erin's problem and indulge themselves at the same time. I just really don't know. Did she make some really, really bad choices? Yes! Could she have stopped the whole thing at anytime by going to the cops (or even her parents)? Yes! It's awfully hard for teenagers to do that, though, so I can't really see her doing that. Probably she didn't realize until it was WAY too late that this was something that was really happening.
I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with pain and is not seeing or understanding the purpose of their suffering.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI picked up Terror by Night by Terry Caffey in the Kindle store when it was available for free. It was set aside until I had an interlude between big books. This autobiography is hard to put down. Terry tells his story with all it's rawness. Although he is a Christian man, he admits to his suicidal tendencies after surviving the murders of his family and attempted murder on him as well. But there is something more amazing about this story. Terry learned forgiveness and tried it. He forgave the killers of his wife and sons. He forgave his daughter who was an accomplice if not the mastermind of the crime. As he sought God in the Bible in the months after the crime he started to ask himself, what would Jesus do in this situation? He concluded that Jesus would not ask for the death penalty. He also knew that Jesus had forgiven him of so many sins. He also knew that Jesus gave him all the room and time he needed to come to faith and repentance. Terry wanted to treat these murderers the same way Christ treated him. So he told the court that this Texan did not want the Texas judicial system to pursue the death penalty. He also continued to visit with his daughter and encourage her and affirm his love for her, even after he learned of her participation in the fratricide and matricide. The entire story is summarized in a video from his website by CBN, but the viewer won't have the benefit of becoming emotionally entangled in Terry's story without reading it. It is a modern version of the the biblical character Job.

It's a very good but sad story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book about loss
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is written by a Christian man who is now a full time minister about his test of Faith when he is badly injured, his young sons & Wife are all murdered in an attack at night in their home. The house is burnt to the ground too, & so he looses everything except his daughter who is involved with planning or taking part in this attack. How he recovers physically, emotionally & mentally from this is part of the story, but it is mostly about his realising just what being a Christian really means as he sees it. This is a very difficult subject to write about, but it is well written as he asks himself a lot of tough questions & knows that he has many more years of coping with this ordeal. I don't feel that all of his conclusions are right for everyone, but this may help someone else in this type of situation. It didn't seem too preachy to me, but it is not a light read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dealing with tragedy and survivor's guilt
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirst of all, this is not a story as such. It's written by a man that has had to come to terms with the loss of his wife and two sons in an horrific attack that leaves him nearly dead. Add to that, his 16 year old daughter is suspected of "masterminding" the attack on her family.
Anyone that goes through such a serious event will inevitably be suffering with post-traumatic stress syndrome, even if it is not diagnosed or realised at the time. There will also be the "survivor's guilt"; why did I live when others didn't? The reality is that this is simply life; bad things happen to good people, but we each have to find our own ways of dealing with tragedy.
In this case, Terry relies heavily on his beliefs; he is a committed Christian and comes to believe that he has been saved for a specific purpose, in order that he can tell his story. Writing about what has happened is no doubt a way for him to release the pain and anguish that he suffered, so that he can move on with his life. The book reveals the good, the bad and the truly appalling; and shows that people are resilient and that they can overcome almost any adversity.
Although there is a tremendous amount of writing about his religious belief throughout the book, I still found it well worth reading, especially as it was a free book when I downloaded it (I see that there is a substantial price on it now). It is a powerful book even if like me you are not a believer. I would however caution against allowing younger or more immature people to read it; there are some sections that they could find quite disturbing.
