Help Save Caper Acres!

  • by: Sarah Patino
  • recipient: City of Chico CA City Council, City of Chico CA Parks Department, City of Chico CA City Manager

The City of Chico recently announced $500,000 worth of City of Chico Parks Department cutbacks that will eliminate 5-7 parks employees, close numerous gates at Bidwell Park, close a bathroom facility & ultimately closes Caper Acres. All closed 4 more days a week. (Open Friday, Saturday & Sunday/Weekends only.)

We as a community find that COMPLETELY unacceptable & want to hear other options. We are joining together to fight for our park!!

Caper Acres is a Chico LANDMARK. For all intents & purposes we believe it is a California Historical Landmark as well. People travel from as far as Sacramento & Redding on a regular basis to come visit it. What about people who have moved out of state? When they come visit relatives guess where they head. The answer is right in front of you. Its Caper Acres.

Back when the decision was made to close Caper Acres on Mondays for maintenance it didn't go over well but the public adjusted. Making the decision to only be open on Friday/Saturday/Sunday is looking for problems. It will be packed & over-run. We predict Caper Acres will have 2-3 times the amount of people on the already crazy weekends now.

Caper Acres was designed as a safe place for children 12 & younger to be able to play & explore. We fully believe that having the park open on weekends only is a horrible choice to your city. What about the stay at home parents? The nannies? The grandparents? The birthday parties? What about parents who work weekends? What about the children who are home-schooled? What about preschoolers & toddlers? What about the children with disabilities? Caper Acres is a haven for all these groups! Caper Acres is one of the safest places. Caper Acres is one of the shadiest places to go in the summer. Caper Acres is one of the only parks that still feels like it isn't a school playground.

At this point the most overwhelming issue is that the Chico City Council, the Mayor & the City Manager made a decision that is not taking into consideration the needs & wants of their constituents by whom they were elected. They also made the decision without obviously thinking that Caper Acres is HEAVILY used during the summer right when you decided to make these changes.

We collectively ask the City to re-open Bidwell Park & Caper Acres immediately to the schedule it had previously.
