What is Musical Storyland?

Musical Storyland brings fairy tales and traditional stories from around the world to life using the power of music. Using live action and animation alongside original compositions, stories are narrated by a host of stars, with guest musicians alongside the BBC Philharmonic.

Story One: Three Billy Goats Gruff

Three brother goats eat all the grass in their meadow. They see fresh grass on the other side of a muddy stream. However, when they try to cross the bridge, they find a grumpy troll!

Story Two: Jack and the Beanstalk

Jack's mum is confused when he brings home five beans as payment for their cow. She throws them out, but they grow into a beanstalk! What will Jack find when he climbs to the top?

Story Three: Ananse and the Monkeys

Ananse needs some money to buy food so makes some hats to sell. But on his way to the market, some monkeys steal them! Can Ananse outwit them to get his precious hats back?

Story Four: The Great Race

Many years ago, the Jade Emperor of China held a race across a great river to decide the order of the years of the zodiac. Twelve daring animals compete to take first place.

Story Five: The Little Fir Tree

When the Little Fir Tree sees the other trees in the forest being used to make things, she wonders when her turn will come. What will life be like when she's a big, tall tree?

Story Six: Hare and Tortoise

Hare doesn't think Tortoise can win. She dances before the race, while Tortoise eats well and goes to bed early. Who will win in the end?

Story Seven: The Enormous Turnip

Once upon a time, a farmer and her daughter planted a small, crinkly seed. They didn't expect much, but guess what? It sprouted into the hugest turnip ever! It was so big that they had to ask some animal pals passing by to give them a hand pulling it up.

Story Eight: The Stone Cutter

Once, a stone cutter wished for a better life, and his wish came true! But as he became a rich man, a king, and more, he learned that his old life wasn't so bad after all.

Story Nine: Three Little Pigs

When three little pigs leave home and build their own houses, which pig's house can stand up to the big, bad wolf's huffing and puffing?

Story Ten: The Baobab Tree

The woodland creatures are hungry and thirsty. Hare talks about a special tree that gives food and water, but they forget its name. They decide to ask wise Owl who lives on the mountain top, but the journey is long. Will they recall the magic words when they return to their forest friends?
