Scholar-in-Residence Weekend with Roger Horwitz
February 3 - 4
We are excited to welcome to our congregation Roger Horwitz, author of "Kosher USA: How Coke Became Kosher and Other Tales of Modern Food." The book follows the journey of kosher foods through the modern industrial food system; their encroachment, conquests, limits and exclusions. Have you ever wondered how mainstream products like Coca-Cola achieved kosher status? Dr. Roger Horowitz, Director of the Hagley Center's History of Business, Technology and Society, will answer this question and more as he delves into the subject of kosher food. His first talk will be in place of the rabbi's sermon at the Friday evening service. He will introduce his topic for us and explain how he has done his research and what he has learned about kosher laws and how kashrut is determined. After the 7:30 service which will also be led by our 4th grade students we will have a chance to visit with our guest at the oneg.
On Saturday morning between 10:45 and noon, Roger Horowitz will deliver his second talk following the morning service. During his second talk Roger will share a success story on the expansion of kosher food options and the many certifications found on kosher foods. As always we will provide coffee and tea and bagels and cream cheese for those who come with an appetite for both food and information.
Saturday evening we will join in our social hall at 7:00 PM for a dessert buffet and Havdalah service followed by our scholar's final presentation concerning a more enduring problem, the ethical issues and supply challenges of kosher meat. This talk will have a historical component to it as well.
Because of the Ted Orliss Scholar-in-Residence fund, CBI is able to welcome scholars like Roger Horowitz to our community. This will be a special weekend for all those who participate. Please share this information with your neighbors and friends. The three talks should be enriching, enlightening and uplifting.
