About this event

Naloxone (Narcan®) is a safe medication that can save someone’s life by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose. It only works on opioids, such as heroin, prescription painkillers and fentanyl, but it is safe to use even if opioids are not present.

The COVID-19 public health emergency has made many New Yorkers’ lives more stressful. The pandemic has also exacerbated the opioid crisis for several folks within the LGBTQ+ communities. If you use drugs, increased stress can change your drug use routines, which may increase your risk of overdose.

Join The CCNY LGBTQ+ Student Center in partnership with NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene's (DOHMH) Chip Ko and Kaity Lloyed-Styles for a free Narcan training! This hybrid training will cover steps for responding to an opioid overdose with naloxone and will outline options for accessing an Overdose Response Kit in person or by mail.

THOSE THAT REGISTER IN ADVANCE WILL GET A FREE OVERDOSE RESPONSE KIT UPON TRAINING COMPLETION

Chip Ko is a Drug and Alcohol Epidemiologist in the Research and Surveillance Unit in the Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care, and Treatment at DOHMH. He works with various datasets looking at alcohol and drug use, as well as morbidity and mortality incidents related to substance use among NYC residents. Chip is recently engaged to his partner John, and is dreaming of a fun destination wedding in 2023!

Kaity Lloyd-Styles is the Program Manager for CAMP Program in the Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care, and Treatment at DOHMH. Kaity provides technical assistance and support to 6 community coalitions working to create LGBTQ+ affirming environmental changes across NYC, and is an advocate for prevention services that are inclusive of harm-reduction education. When not at work, Kaity studies Traditional East Asian Medicine and Acupuncture!
