CCSC Campus Life Committee Iron Chef Competition Registration
Thank you for your interest in the CCSC Campus Life Committee Iron Chef Competition which will take place on Friday, February 27, 2009 from 5-7pm in Lerner Hall's Party Space.  The iron chef competition will be a celebration of Columbia University culinary talent.  Following the model of the popular Iron Chef television series, we will invite student teams to show off their culinary skills and battle to be named the best cooks on campus.  Instead of focusing on the use of lavish ingredients, however, our competition will highlight dishes which better represent the needs of college students by challenging participants to prepare their food on a small shopping budget within a relatively short amount of time.  The event cooking and preparation will take place throughout the day and presentations and judging will take place during the event time from 5-7pm.  The rules are as follows:

Teams/Eligibility:
Teams consisting of 3-4 members must be at lest 50% Columbia College students.  With a maximum of 20 participating teams, these will be chosen to compete with a first-come-first-serve basis from the time of registration.   All team members must be Columbia University undergraduate students.  Team registration through this site will end on Tuesday, February 24, 2009.

Judging:
Participant teams will be judged based on four primary criteria: Taste, Originality, Use of the Secret Ingredient, and Presentation of the dish which includes both the plating of the dish and the description to the judges.  A judging panel will be responsible for rating each criteria on a scale of 1-5 in order to produce a final team score out of 80 possible total points.  A random sampling of audience members will also be asked to rank teams to produce an audience favorite.

Schedule:
Participating teams will be meet Campus Life Committee organizers on the morning of the competition at 11:30am in order to check in, review the final details of the program, and receive e-forms for food purchases.  At 12:00 noon teams will be told the Secret Ingredient and released to make purchases and cook in their personal kitchens.  At 4:30pm all teams must be present in the Lerner Party Space to be scheduled into presentation order.  Late arrival will result in disqualification.  Judging will begin at 5:15pm and each team will be given a maximum of 2 minutes to present their dishes to the judges and audience.  Groups will be allocated time to do final preparations of dishes in the Lerner Kitchen immediately before their scheduled presentation time.

Food:
Students will be provided with an e-form to Westside Market in the amount of $40/team.  With the exception of the pantry items detailed as acceptable additions (list to come), all food must be purchased within this budget, within the given time, and from this location.  Teams will be responsible for plating three servings of each dish for the judge's critique as well as tasting portions (bites) of each dish for at least 20 people served buffet-style to the audience.  We will not require a set number of dishes, however the judges will take number and variety into consideration.  The secret ingredient will be non-dairy and vegetarian.

Prizes:
Specific prizes are To Be Announced but will include cookbooks, grocery gift cards, and gift certificates to top NYC restaurants with a chance of meeting the chef.
