Review
Ruth Burkett Weeks' fresh style and believable characters draw the reader onto the civil war battlefield. Like her solders from the mist, Ruth's story gives a unique perspective into the reasons men answer the call to duty as well as asks the question, What would happen if men refused to fight? --Linda Apple
Frown, laugh and cry, Ruth has them all between these book covers. When you finish it you're going to say where can I get another one. A fresh breath of words from a fabulous new writer. --Dusty Richards, Spur Award Winning Author

About the author

Before Ruth Burkett Weeks, aka R.H. Burkett wrote Soldiers From the Mist, her claim to fame was shared with her brother as being the first girl/boy twins born at Washington Regional Hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Soldiers From the Mist is her first novel and is unqiue in that the story was told to her by the ghost of a Confederate soldier who haunted her house. The book not only tells his story but gives actual conversations and events that occured while working with a ghost as well, called Whisperings. Gives a whole new meaning to the term, "ghost writer."
Ruth is not only an award winning writer but has served on the board of the Ozark Writer's League in Branson, Mo. and has judged writing contests as well. She is a member of the NorthWest Arkansas Writers Workshop, Oklahoma Writers Federation, Ozark Creative Writers, Women Writing the West, Mystery Writer's of America and Western Writers of America.
Her second book is a paranormal romance, The Rook and The Raven, from The Wild Rose Press and is available in eBook form for Kindle and Nook.
Her third book, Daughter of the Howling Moon, a paranormal/suspense/mystery/occult, has just been released from Pen-L publishing in both paperback and Kindle.
Ruth lives in Rogers, Arkansas and is currently writing her fourth novel, The Legend of Dixie Dandelion.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2013The book has a great story line that pulls you in and keeps you interested throughout. Set in the Civil War, the story involves us in the lives of those drawn into the war and its affect on them and those who love them.
Within the story and the musings of the author, we are brought to question our preconceived ideas of spirits, visions, and fate.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2013Easy read. Started on Sunday afternoon and couldn't put the book down. Unique involvement by the writer with the characters. Made you laugh and cry, loved the ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2013I was pleasantly surprised that this book is more than another story about the Civil Was. The Whispering sections were Weeks communicated with the ghost of Charles Ely added a unique, interesting touch to the book as well. A must read. Looking forward to a sequal.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2014What do you write when ghosts of Civil War soldiers come to you and ask you to write their story?
Anything they want!
Fun aside, "Soldiers From the Mist" by Ruth Burkett Weeks states that it is based upon that premise. Periodically through the novel, Weeks steps out from behind the curtain with little vignettes detailing some of the encounters. I found these to add to the mystique and drama of the story as well as further endearing the characters to me.
Whether or not one wishes to accept the basis, the details provided of the lives of each character are at such a depth that none come through as cardboard cutouts, they each step out in full three dimensional, ok four if you count the spiritual aspect, form. I found myself caring deeply for each of them.
An important question near the end:
"It's interesting that problems such as alcoholism, mental, verbal, and physical abuse, dysfunctional families, women's rights, depression, and man's inhumanity to man, are as prevalent today as they were over 150 years ago. Have we really evolved?"
Yes, and reading this book may help with one small step.
Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2012SOLDIERS FROM THE MIST is a wonderful story, and without a doubt one of the best books I've read. Although the story is set during the Civil War time period, the themes in the story are as relevant today as they were then. Young men are caught up in a war, and do what they think is the right thing, and then learn first hand that war is not what they envisioned. The author does an excellent job of placing the reader in the hearts and minds of the characters. I felt their emotions, saw what they saw, heard what they heard, and smelled what they smelled.
The mother of one of the young men, determined to join his two friends going off to war, sells her wedding ring to buy her son a horse in hopes that having a horse will provide him a better chance of surviving the war. After reading that scene, I knew then I would never put the book down until I finished reading it. I stayed up until 4:00 AM the following morning until I finished it. The ending is outstanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2014If the dead could speak, what tales they could tell. Soldiers From the Mist is a wonderful combination of historical fiction and ghost story. Ruth retells the events in the lives of Civil War era characters--characters whose spirits visit her in her modern-day home. The war tore their lives apart and they relate their experiences to Ruth. The book will appeal to Civil War buffs as well as connoisseurs of the paranormal --a thoroughly enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2013I am so intrigued at the method used in compiling this book. The author had lots of help from here and from the beyond. Once you start this book you will not want to put it down, so get all your stuff done and then just enjoy. I doubt you have read anything like it, and while it does take place during the Civil War, it offers so much more, don't let that turn you away.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2012Ruth Burkett Weeks is dead center with her debut novel of the Civil War. A love story, a ghost tale, and a historical read, Soldiers From the Mist is a fresh take on The War and why men march into battle. Available in print or on Kindle, this book brims with mystery, myth, and fact.
