Cinderskella (Scarily Ever Laughter Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

Middle school is scary. So is turning into a skeleton at night. To win at both, you've got to put some skin in the game.

Cindy has a secret. Every night since her mother’s death, she turns into a boney, white skeleton. As if that wasn't bad enough, Cindy's dad is afraid of her, she has an evil stepmother who makes her do crazy chores, and there's a werewolf who wants to make Cindy his midnight snack. This curse is really starting to get under her skin.

With the Spring Fling dance fast approaching and Ethan, the cutest boy in sixth grade, showing interest in Cindy, she must figure out a way to shed her curse even if just for one night. But when she discovers that her curse allows her to visit her mother in the Underworld, Cindy realizes things might not be as bad as she thought. That is until she meets Mr. Death, the strange and wacky undertaker.

Things are heating up in the Underworld, and if Cindy doesn’t take matters into her own hands, the people she loves most might be in jeopardy. But if she cures her curse, she may never see her mother again.

Review

"A young girl adjusts to big life changes in Amie Borst and Bethanie Borst's (
Snow Fright, 2016, etc.) charming middle-grade novel with images by debut illustrator Hercka.

Middle school can be rough, but 12-year-old Cindy is having a particularly difficult time. Before her witch mother dies, she casts a spell on her daughter that causes her to transform into a skeleton every evening at sundown. Her father is horrified by his daughter's nighttime appearance, and Cindy feels more alone than ever--until she discovers the perks of her nightly metamorphosis. With the help of a fairy godmother and a few other supernatural creatures, Cindy realizes she can journey into the Underworld and visit her mom while the surface world slumbers. Her nightly excursions give her solace, especially after her father brings home a new wife and her two unpleasant daughters. Soon, Cindy's annoyance with her stepmother and her bizarre chore lists outweighs her grief. She also has a crush on Ethan McCallister, a boy at school who might be interested in her, as well. With the middle school dance coming up, Cindy finds herself torn between the land of the living and the world of the dead. The author's supernatural twist on a classic fairy tale is unexpected and enjoyable. Hercka's accompanying illustrations evoke filmmaker Tim Burton
The Nightmare Before Christmas. Cindy is a chatty and likable narrator who frequently provides narrative asides (under "Time Out!" captions) that will tickle young readers' funny bones. Yet underneath the humor and the camp, the story has heart. It poignantly presents a family's struggle to adjust to the passing of a loved one, and it offers subtle insights into parenting, presented from a middle school perspective: "How do parents always know where we are, even when we don't want them to?"

A darkly sweet paranormal fairy tale about rediscovering life after death."--

I sure hope Bethanie and Amie Borst have more cute tales they're planning to write because I will be first in line to read them. This fantastic adventure is unlike any other Cinderella story I've ever read and all the little surprises throughout will keep you on your toes. The best part, of course, are the little "Time Outs" throughout the book. These reads kept me giggling through Cindy's hard times with just the perfect amount of spooky for a middle grade (and me!)

The lessons it teaches about accepting ourselves in all our beautifully unique glory also won me over! I highly recommend this book for parents and children alike!

I bought 2 copies of Cinderskella, one for my granddaughter, one for myself...We both thoroughly enjoyed it. It was so cleverly written, in that it addressed the real angst that young people have in a way that was entertaining. Cinderskella's adventures and obstacles seemed dire at times. . But she figured out how to navigate through her difficulties. It made it seem as if some of the trials kids have today might also be handled with wit and smart thinking . The heroine is so relatable( in spite of her condition and very likeable that kids can identify with her. A well thought out story with many surprises!!!

Cnderskella by Amie and Bethanie Borst is the first book is in The Scarily Ever Laughter Series. This was a fun book to read making me laugh and cry. Cindy is a young girl learning to deal with many problems and discovering how to accept who she is and how to fit into her new life being a skeleton. Cindy's trips in the elevator to the underground were always exciting. The time outs are just to funny. This is a great book for kids and I know moms will love it too.

This middle grade is a mix of what's spooky, fun, and heart-tugging. It's a unique adaptation of a fairy tale--girl turns into skeleton, hello--that's sure to please young readers. It was sitting in my Kindle for a while--although the Kindle edition link is no longer working on Amazon--but I couldn't ignore the ebook for long. Between the cover, description, and opening pages that pulled me in, I read it in two days.

I have always been a fan of the fairy tale, but seriously.....how many times can you read the same one? Or read an adaptation that is the same? This was a terrific take on an old tale. I loved reading it for myself and reading out out loud to my little ones. This is a great story for a young, budding, independent reader. It is creative, a little dark, very funny, full of love, and impossible to put down. What an awesome mother - daughter team. I hope this is not the last book they write for us.

Cinderskella was so much fun to read! My daughter & I curled up on her bed reading it and when we were done my daughter told me she was so glad that I bought the other 2 books. Love it! I bought a set for our local library and am contemplating buying copies for my nieces for Christmas! Love it! I can't wait to read more from Amie & Bethanie!

Loved this one. Cute, very inventive. Author has a wonderful imagination! Great for kids who like books with a bit of a "scare" factor, but it's very tame and not something that will give them nightmares. Well done! Looking forward to more books by this author!
