Thank you for your interest in participating in the Yale Women’s Leadership Initiative’s fifth annual Women in Leadership Conference, which will take place at the Yale Law School on Saturday, November 3, 2012. The conference will bring together students and alumnae to engage in a vital conversation: How do we best empower female leaders in a fast-changing world? This year’s conference is themed ‘Gaining the Edge: Leveraging Women’s Competitive Strengths’, and will feature workshops and panels providing pre-professional exposure and skill development with special attention paid to the particular challenges and opportunities women face.

Keynote speakers include Marie Wilson of The White House Project, Anne-Marie Slaughter, former Director at the U.S. Department of State and author of "Why Women Still Can't Have it All," and Jennifer Holleran, Executive Director of Mark Zuckerberg's foundation, Startup: Education. FROM CAMPAIGN TO POLICY: WOMEN IN GOVERNMENT

Do you have dreams of someday running for office but have no idea of how to launch your political career? Interested in what goes into shaping foreign policy? Or maybe you are just curious about what is it like to be a woman politician, work in the pentagon, or make an impact in government? Come to hear the stories of women who have campaigned for both state and federal offices and who have played roles in shaping and implementing government policy in the US and around the world.

EDUCATION THROUGH THE AGES: K12 to Ph.D

Whether you already know you are headed for a career in education, you are still trying to decide what field you want to go in, or you just want to get a better sense of what it is like to be at the front of the classroom, the education panel is right for you. Women from primary to secondary to post-secondary education will be able to fill you in on the unique challenges of a career in education and answer all of your questions.

KNOW THYSELF: CAREER PATH DISCERNMENT FOR WOMEN

Choosing a career involves understanding who we truly are on the inside, and then finding a match for our values, personalities, passions, and gifts in the working world. In this workshop, the presenter will offer three models of career discernment practices that are especially useful for women and will provide participants with opportunities for experimentation and discussion.

CONSULTING DEMYSTIFIED

Interested to know why so many Yale women have joined the ranks of consultants after they graduate? If the idea of solving business problems and building relationships in the corporate world sounds intriguing to you, then come join this panel of women and learn about their respective career paths. These panelists come from diverse backgrounds and their experiences are excellent examples of all the different opportunities offered to those interested in consulting.

BEHIND THE BRAND: WOMEN IN MARKETING

From Louis Vuitton to the New Yorker, every brand has a carefully crafted public face. But who are the masterminds behind the public images we consume? Attend this panel to explore the competitive and fast-paced world of marketing and public relations. Our five panelists will share their experiences as women driving powerful work in the field of advertising and media.  

WHY YALE IS BAD FOR YOUR CAREER

What Yale habits should you “un-learn” before your first day at the office? Attend this workshop for a candid, interactive talk on the things Yale taught this woman about the world that were misguided or downright wrong. Learn what it actually means be out there in "the real world" and correct those Ivy League misperceptions.

BEYOND THE BAR: WOMEN IN LAW

From prosecuting against criminals to negotiating company mergers to dealing with patents or immigration, law has so many areas to explore. Whether you are deadset on a law school education or simply an avid follower of courtroom dramas, the Law Panel is a good chance to learn more about the field and what roles women, who have previously been underrepresented, are now taking. Come learn about upholding the justice of our country from women who have practiced law in a wide variety of fields.

INVEST YOUR INTEREST: WOMEN IN FINANCE

From the Bowling Green Bull to the New York Stock Exchange, our view of a career in finance often stops at Wall Street. Take a step out of the city and come to this panel for a fresh perspective on all things finance. Professionals from J.P. Morgan, Credit Suisse, Capital Research and Management, and the Carlyle Group will discuss how they constructed meaningful careers within a new generation of financiers.

MAKING YOUR MARK IN MEDIA

Do you have a passion for journalism? Have you ever wondered what it is like to interview Clint Eastwood and Daniel Craig or be the Editor in Chief of the most widely read publication in America? How about what it takes to publish the work of Bill McKibben and Ian Frazier or have your work published in the New York Times Magazine? Join us to gain exciting advice from women leaders at the cutting edge of media. Learn about the paths to successful careers in print, radio, and broadcast journalism; editing; producing; and publishing from women who have done it all.

WOMEN IN SCIENCE: THE STEM OF SOCIETY

Where will these science, math, and engineering classes lead you? Interested in quantitative research or medicine, but not sure what a B.S. degree can do for your career? This panel will consist of distinguished women in STEM fields from scientific research, pharmaceutical industry, to academia. The women will also address the rising attention given to the lack of females in STEM fields. Find out how they started their careers, overcame gender imbalances in the professional world, and channeled their intellectual passion into a fruitful career trajectory.

WOMEN IN THE WORLD

As globalization becomes more and more a part of our lives, an international career is becoming both more appealing and more inevitable. Come to this panel to learn from experienced women about how they tackled their international careers and hear their advice. Whether you are already set on an international career or just want to learn more about the opportunities available, this panel will help you get a better feel for what it is like to work across borders.  

MEN IN ACTION: FEMINISM OF THE FUTURE

Ever wish you could get into a man's head and figure out what he's thinking? For the first time, the Yale Women's Leadership Initiative welcomes men among our ranks of panelists and presents to you the male perspective unraveled. Come learn about how these men feel about inequalities in the workplace, female leadership, work-life balance and any other queries you may have for them. It is time to acknowledge that "we're all in this together" and the opposite sex may just have some of the answers we are looking for.
