- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2014I bought this book in May as we are preparing to bring home our daughters from China in a few months. It immediately brought me to tears! All the things I have dreamed of saying to my girls.....plus so many absolutely needful things to communicate - I was so happy! The way the book explains how to say each word is fabulous! It makes it so easy for me to truly correctly pronounce what my girls will most need to hear from this new stranger who loves them fiercely! My friend (and also adoptive mom) who is traveling with me loved practicing at summer camp in the evenings! This book is a blessing!! Thank you for providing such a valuable resource for adoptive parents!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2020This was just what we needed for our trip to meet and adopt our son from China! The phonetic spellings of the Chinese words was absolutely essential, and the audio files were open in our browsers the whole trip for quick reference and playback. The book is the perfect size: small enough to pack in a carry-on or backpack but big enough to read easily. Loved this product—one of the best things we packed!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2016I was really excited to get this book 6 weeks before our adoption. 2 weeks in, the audio files stopped working. If you want to make sense to your child, you really have to have the audio files. It's just too hard to guess on inflection without them. Still waiting on a response from the company about why the audio files no longer work. I'd give it 5 stars if the audio was running!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2015Fabulous book! I have studied Mandarin off and on for three years, but this is the only place I've found the phrases that are needed to communicate with our newly adopted child. And....drumroll...she understood every single one! For anyone that has tried to use Mandarin, you know how huge this is. The book gives you the PInyin and tone marks. I have seen another book that omitted the tone marks and so was functionally worthless. If you can't hear or reproduce the tines, you can down load phrases onto a tablet or smart phone.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2014I'm giving this four stars because this is a very SLIM book and I paid $15 for it. I was surprised at just how small it was considering the price. The content is great and very helpful, just disappointed at how sparse the book really is.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2017Love this book! I would give it 10 stars if I could. My wife and I bought this book to take with us to China when we adopted our 2 year old son. It was a great tool to have to be able to communicate small needs with him. The best thing about this book is that it tells you how to pronounce everything! I would highly recommend this book if you are adopting a child from China, no matter the age!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2016This is good information, but we probably could have found it for free on the web. This book is WAYYYYYYY overpriced, given that it is only about twenty pages in length. I was expecting much more for $20.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2014We have taken Mandarin in the past but have lost much of it. My husband often travels to China for business so it is still somewhat familiar to him. This book is wonderful. We haven't used it on our adoption trip yet but will be going in the next few weeks. I LOVE the audio downloads that come along with it. The book doesn't show the tones you need to use while speaking. The downloads solve that problem.
