RSVP to "Telling Our Stories and Building Bridges"
A Diversity Workshop Series for Families and Young Children
Facilitated by Alicia Hsu, 2017
-A Free Program-

This series of three workshops is designed to engage parents, guardians and their young children in
becoming active community members through story telling. The facilitator, Alicia Hsu, is a retired
teacher of Brookline Public Schools. She has recently written several blog posts for Teaching
Tolerance, a publication by the Southern Poverty Law Center, entitled “Small Stories with
Superpowers” http://www.tolerance.org/blog/small-stories-superpowers and “Fueled by Doubt”
http://www.tolerance.org/blog/fueled-doubt that help to tell part of her own story.
As parents and guardians, we hope to be able to help our children feel confident in the stories they
have to tell, and interested in listening to the stories of others. We hope to empower our children,
and to model for them compassion and respect for all. Knowing, honoring and sharing our stories
are ways we can join together to build a strong community.

All sessions will be held at Hunneman Hall in the Public Library of Brookline. For more details,
please contact Chris Chanyasulkit at cchanyasulkit@brooklinema.gov. To RSVP, please visit

Session 1: Story Shoes (Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11am)
This session will provide an opportunity for children and families to share stories inspired by a pair
of shoes! Each participant is invited to bring a shoe (or a picture of one) to this gathering - one that
helps tell the story of a special journey, event, memory or dream. Perhaps the first baby shoe, a
grandmother’s slipper, a worn soccer cleat... There will be time to share our stories, and consider
what it might be like to “walk in someone else’s shoes.” There will be a related art activity, and time
to peruse picture books such as Father’s Rubber Shoes by Yumi Heo and New Shoes by Susan Lynn
Meyer.

Session 2: A Caring Community Conversation (Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 7 pm)
This session is for grown-ups to gather and engage in conversation about the challenges and
triumphs of parenting in Brookline. What does it look like day to day for us to model compassion
and respect for all? How do we manage our busy lives, engage in community and still have time for
story telling? There will be materials and ideas for family story journals, as well as time to relax,
dabble, draw and chat.

Session 3: Everyday Superheroes (Saturday, March 18th at 11am) This session is an opportunity for
children and families to identify the superhero qualities within each of us, and think about the ways
we can activate these traits in our day-to-day lives and interactions. Participants will have a chance
to role-play using their inner superhero to advocate for themselves and stand up for friends in
need. There will be time dedicated to decorating a superhero cape, and enjoying books such as Max
by Bob Graham and The Day I Lost My Superpowers by Michael Escoffier.
