“This is my brother. He can be cute; he can also be a little shit”. Down’s Bro.
It'll take about an hour to read Steve Palmer's book about his son, Stan and extended family. Stan has Down's Syndrome and Steve's book is an honest account of life with this "endearing, infuriating, loving and frustrating" boy. If you’re a parent with a new diagnosis of Down’s, this book’s for you; when you’re ready. Because it’s warts-and-all; maybe you’ll prefer it that way. There's also the memory of a night in Cardiff in 2002 from this Stoke City-supporting family. From school days to holidays, from clichés to relationships with siblings, Steve offers you family life - with a child with a learning disability - as it really is; hard work, worth it and at times, a bit of a laugh quite frankly.

This is a lovely book about family life. It's about going swimming, football, stuff getting broken, school. Steve's son, Stan, has Down's, which means that the Palmer family's life isn't quite like mine, but nonetheless I recognised so many of the observations here. It's an honest book, sometimes perhaps uncomfortably so, but it's also funny and very readable.

Don't call it "inspiring" whatever you do!! It's not. It's a heart-felt, warts-and-all account of life for, and with, a young man with Down's Syndrome. Stan is full of personality....and mischief. And from "Down's Dad" you get an honest portrayal of what it's like for the family on a daily basis, living with Stan's special personality and special requirements. Funny, gritty, but more than anything else - insightful - this book will undoubtedly help new parents learning to live with a baby with Down's (what to expect, what to avoid, what to cherish); but with a much wider audience in mind, it will also spread clever, non-patronising, non-judgemental awareness of a condition that is still too little understood.

Very interesting account of family life with young Stan. Things are tough at times and the author tells it like it is, but his good sense of humour means that this is not only an informative read - it's entertaining as well.

Love it because it's almost my sons story, same age , similar experiences which I could really relate to, smile about and LOL with recognition. That in no way implies it is a generic story, it remains very personal to the author and his two sons. It does however, give the impression down's mum is not on the scene much, or maybe it's a reflection of the author's (and sadly, societies) experience that dad's are often overlooked. The style of the book is refreshingly down to earth - the author writes what's in his head with great skill. Disagree with the author's assumption it is a book for new parents - it was just as relevant and interesting for me. A bit weaker towards the end (possibly because of the football analogies, I hate football, but that's just me). Would love to read more of his work.

Fantastic, no-nonsense insight to the highs and lows of life generally, but just with an added chromosome. Recommended reading for anyone - not just the family and friends of people with Down's Syndrome.

A great read. The author would hate it if one used the work "inspiring" , but it is full of daily life anecdotes that many people can understand that makes one laugh, shout with anger and ponder. All that in a short read!

There's no gloss, no spin, lots of grief but most of all a lot of love in this book. Steve beautifully describes how he and his family responded to Stan and how Stan changed their lives. A funny, fast read - by the end of it I felt I knew every member of the Palmer family intimately. Chaos makes a frequent appearance and, Down's with the kids is a great lesson in acceptance. After all, noone's life goes according to plan and sometimes it's the unexpected that brings us together.

Fascinating to hear another parent's point of view, just read it in one sitting. The author will hopefully be pleased to hear it is in no way inspiring, however.
