Actually, Jaipur - the home of Bandikui - had some interesting variants on the Sun image in its cancellations. One or two look distinctly pixillated, in the old sense of the word. Must try to organise myself sufficiently to put together a little selection.

Didn't know if this should go here or the dreamers thread, but since the bid is where it is... I guess this just shows the strength of the China market. First you take a Post card, Remove the Stamp, then sell both separately and double your profits. As of now, the bid is $30.00....unreal

Shhh, everyone is going to be soaking the stamps off their postcards now...or offering covers "with one stamp fallen off".

To a postcard collector, they would look at the picture side and maybe not care about the stamp on the back. I think it was MrBoggler who said one day about going to postcard fairs and annoying the dealers by browsing through stock and flipping all the pictures over to see the stamps on the back, giving material an eye the postcard dealers don't have. 8)

This Chinese postcard doesn't belong here, or in the dreamers thread.
From 1906, the golden era of postcards. This card is in good shape with minimal damage at the corners. I regularly see cards like this sell $30-50. This card has an undivided back and it's normal to see the writing around the edges on the front. Postal regulations didn't allow for the message to be written on the address side at the time.
I haven't so far considered the postal usage.
Pre UPU (China joined in 1914) and mailed to Germany with a receiving postmark, if it had the stamp would probably be a $100 card.

Not a worthless lot but certainly MAD BIDDERS.

A Stampboards favourite joanne620 sold this set of C of A MINT Specimens.

It was bid up to $ 262.00

Item Number: 360352851988.

https://cgi.ebay.com.au/KANGAROO-CofA-WMK-SPECIMEN-SET-ONLY-11480-EXIST-RARE-/360352851988

Image

Image

Described as:

KANGAROO C OF A WATERMARK HIGH VALUE ""SPECIMEN""" SET OF THREE TYPE D

THIS SET IS IN SUPERB MINT VERY LIGHTLY HINGED CONDITION AND VERY FRESH WITH GREAT COLOUR AND PERFORATIONS.

THE TOTAL PRINTING FOR THIS SCARCE SET ACCORDING TO BRUSDEN WHITE THE BIBLE FOR AUSTRALIAN STAMPS IS 11480 WHICH MAKES IT A VERY RARE RARE SET OF AUSTRALIAN STAMPS.

At least he didn't quote some fictional retail price.

The problem is the retail price of a MINT set (Type D) is $150.

These are by far the most common of the specimens. 11,480 in the hands of collectors is not very rare rare.

Oof. How does she manage to get bids like that? The set is hinged, and the 2 Pound is not well-centered. It's the most common of the high-value Specimen sets in typical condition for it. If I sold that, I'd be lucky to get $100 for it.

Some of us are still bunnies.

I bought a stock book of Romania that seemed to have some decent older stuff. Can't say if any of the older stuff is worth anything--some of it looks like it was run off on a laser printer.

Wasn't expensive--under $70 shipped. Fortunately, the seller included a second stock book of CTO for a total of about 3000 different stamps.

If nothing else, I have 2 used stock books, though they have Scott numbers penciled on every page.

Thanks to this thread, I know I'm a bunny and know better than to buy expensive stuff without a clue.

And for newer members, do not forget we have another classic and super long thread here, with around 70,000 page views, called -

"eBay and Other On-Line Dreamers - A Photo Lot Compendium"

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=379&start=1750

Showing all kinds of totally worthless 5c junk that is being listed on ebay at $1,000 or $10,000 - or higher - there was one this week offered for $200,000 -- 365 days a year.

And sadly, some of it SELLS.

I once contacted a similar seller, before placing a bid, to see if they would send the item by regular mail (about 98¢ as I recall).

They refused to acknowledge the existence of regular mail and would not lower their postage rate.

I've never bought anything to test whether they actually spent that much on postage, or just pocketed any difference.

notesmagic has sold 3 other MNH 9d sesquicentanries recently and all were different stamps. They had similar centering but were definitely not the same stamp being sold again. He didn't get over $8 for them.

I think it is a case of mad bidders.

I don't, or they decided to make a gift of about $48 of the $49.99 sale price to the seller.

The black (Official) stamps look OK, and the green stamp on piece in the top row could be OK too. Maybe $2 worth, on a good day. The rest are all fakes, and described as such in the notes in Gibbons.

Well, photocopies of Chinese Minature sheets excepted, these two have to be as silly as I have seen for a lonnnngggggg time:

Current Bid: $A265.00 + minimum $25.00 postage

Over $40.00 per Kilo for extremely common Kiloware. Bidder/clown is s***e who has placed 16 bids on this item

But wait, there's more...

3 Kilos of Australian Pre-decimal Kiloware

Around $75.00 per Kilo for extremely common pre Decimal Kiloware. And guess who the high bidder is? Yep, got it in one. s***e who has placed 8 bids on this item.

With an hour to go...

I really want to meet s***e and have him as my newest best friend. You see, I own this bridge over Sydney Harbour....

I'm not exactly mad, maybe a little. I'm a little lost on where I can show this stamp I purchased on Ebay for $60, I have no idea if this is Red & Blue or Blue & Red. There is a mark on the end of shillings so I guess it isn't Mint anyway any information would be helpful price, real or fake and how mad I am

The markings on the back suggest that it is SG 139 issued in 1863 (it is not). And nor is it tfrom the same series which Blue and Red, and Red and Blue issues, because these did not contain the word "Postage"

It is in fact a stamp issued in 1901, S.G. 398 Red and Blue., catalogued at £60 by Gibbons, but readily vailable in good condition for well under $100.00.

Unfortunately yours is badly toned, and possibly thinned under the hinge remainder. I suggest that you paid about $20+ too much.

I would not like the odds. And paying over $340 on a flyer strikes me as good as putting your money on a 100 to 1 shot in the Melbourne Cup.

I purchased many pounds of pre decimal stuff in the pre decimal days, (at much lower prices of course) and never found even one 10/- Navigator or 10/- Arms in any of it.

The seller said he was selling on behalf of a deceased estate, so I bet that these were gone through with a fine tooth comb before being consigned to the Kiloware pile.

...ETA: Thes seller has just put up another 6.5K bag of decimals starting at one cent (as did the two above). I wonder where this one will finish up.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1928-3d-BLUE-KOOKABURRA-Used-/280720139765?

You could pick up a VFU copy every day of the week for $3.00 - 4.00. You can pick up a perfectly centred MUH copy for $5.00 or less.

I do not think it is shill biding, having had a look at the history of the seller and buyer (and underbidder). The winner (and the underbidder) are just Bunnies.

Two bidders have sent this, at best, 10 cent stamp up to $7.65 (including postage) with 12 hours still to go.

And from the same seller, a $3.00 set bid up to $9.00 including postage:

Oddly enough, both this and the Kangaroo item immediately above have the same leading bidder u***d who has a feedback of three, and has a 64% history with this seller.

This block is currently bid up to A$9.50, plus postage. It still has a couple of hours to run, so who knows what the final price will be!

Seller is notesmagic.

Real value? Maybe $1 on a very good day! I notice this seller has a lot of cheap blocks listed, all seemingly bid on and all going for more than their real worth.

Well, not totally worthless - it's worth a few bucks, but a mad bidder has bitten into this one:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USA-2002-Commemorative-Stamp-Year ... ac35f#shId

Image
USA The 2002 Commemorative Stamp Yearbook
The bid is USD 1. So far so good.

Here is the good bit: Postage is USD2,300

The same bidder r***o ( 2739 feedback) has another USD1 bid for another item from this seller. Fortunately the postage for the second lot is only USD46 I hope he combines postage.

Maybe international shipping is 2,300, but domestically its "normal"? eBay always "detects" your location and quotes shipping accordingly.

For 2,300 the seller must be planning to buy a plane ticket and personally deliver the item; there was that seller on the Dreamers thread who said he would do just that, for his "rare valuable $200,000" kiddy collection. Don't remember now if that was also the guy who ran the pizza shop or if they were separate buffoons.

I dropped him an email, he said it was an error. Problem solved. No more witch hunt.

I occasionally see seemingly high postage showing up in the main part of a listing only to find there is a much cheaper alternative when one clicks on the postage tab. I recall one showing expedited delivery at around $40 odd on a cheap lot only to find that normal postage was $2.

It is very off putting to prospective buyers and many wouldn't bother going that step further.

That auto population by eBay software is something you have to keep in mind when you see high postage costs.

But then again there are others who do charge that bit too much. Having said that, when I am sending off 20 lots it takes a lot of time to pack, address etc and if that is your business, time is money. That can be where the packing fee comes into it.

There is no witch hunt. Be aware of the context and title of this thread. It's the "mad bidders" being commented on throughout this thread, not the sellers. You must admit that anybody bidding on an item such as this with $2,300 postage attached has to be a little mad.

You might also note that I did not even name the seller, as is my habit in this thread. He has done nothing wrong (well apart from a typo) as is the case with all the sellers of items on this thread.

BTW, the Auction still shows USD2,300 postage.

You cannot change shipping once you have a bid and, for all we know, the bidder emailed the seller and asked about the shipping before he bid.

A couple of things could be done though:

1. A note could be made in the body of the listing explaining the error in postage. I don't think that this is against eBay rules. It would certainly encourage more bids, as the item is clearly worth more than USD1

2. He could withdraw the item, and relist at the correct rate.
for all we know, the bidder emailed the seller and asked about the shipping before he bid.
This had crossed my mind, but why bid before the posting charge is corrected? If the bidder asked before he bid, then I as the seller would have told him not to bid before the correction was made.

If the bidder asked after he bid, well...anybody can judge what he is...

Of course it is also possible that the bidder has read Machiavelli, put up the Bid, then asked for clarification on the postage. If the answer was USD2,300, he could have withdrawn his bid.

If the answer was (more likely) USD23, he leaves the bid in place, and gets the item for USD24, because most others who looked would be put off by the postage cost. Pretty clever if that's what he did.

More Gandhi mania - but this is even madder than the normal...

320775037167

At £53 currently - but... its only a set of the three low values, albeit UMM.

A year ago that set of three could be got for around £6 in UMM condition. I'll be listing a couple of sets this week if anyone's interested!

Not worthless (Sydney retail for light hinged is AUD 12). but certainly not worth the AUD 57 that it was bid up to. It started at AUD 3.
