4.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

A collection of award winning and critically acclaimed short stories by Fergal O'Byrne.
The stories cover a vast array of subjects: the fragile and ephemeral existence of life, the use of robotic technology to assist a paraplegic to walk across America, the effects of extreme cold and starvation on researchers in Antarctica, a love story from an immortal human to his deceased daughter, the use of Bernoulli’s Theorem to soothe a scientist bringing home his dead sister’s ashes from America, an other-worldly, perfectly mathematical cube stalking random people, and finally, the dystopian tale of life after a man-made black hole has nearly destroyed our civilisation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eternal Love as a Physics Problem

I don’t even pretend to understand short stories, but “Careful What You Wish For,” Fergal O’Byrne’s brainly collection, is even more inscrutable than usual. His characters are especially fond of Barber’s Adagio for Strings (especially the coda); and Fergal treats us to advanced physics in every story. Adagio for Strings has so many unanticipated suspensions it feels like it’s in a minor key, but they always resolve to C major, and I can see why the author associates the long, gently evaporating final strains of the coda with infinity. Is O'Byrne layering the adagio over Michio Kaku’s colorful explanation of string theory, to express the imponderable puzzle of death and the stubborn hope of eternal life? Honestly, I have no idea. But I am a sucker for a love story, and I was haunted by the depth of passion in these tales, each of which is about “the coda,” or an eternity that is felt if not provably by the theory of everything.
