Why this petition matters

Started by Exit 4 Open Space

We, concerned citizens, support:

  • prime agriculture soils
  • preservation of open space
  • the vitality of downtown Randolph
  • the uniquely beautiful western view toward the Green Mountains

All of which will be irreparably damaged with the development of the Green Mountain Center at Exit 4 (I-89), a project  which will fill 173 acres of land with 1.15 million square feet of mixed uses, plus approximately an equivalent area with parking lots and roads.

We favor growth which is within the Village of Randolph, preserves Vermont’s working landscape, and recognizes that the views from Exit 4 are an invaluable shared natural resource (in accordance with the Town Plan) and one of Randolph's greatest assets.  Village growth  should include development of unused and under-utilized non-agricultural properties, instead of suburban-style sprawl at the interstate.  We ask that you recognize that building on and paving over prime agriculture land will impact the farmers in Randolph and surrounding rural communities; will negate the attractiveness of the Randolph area, for the view will be lost; and will compete with the village-based economy of Randolph.  Also, please recognize other resulting impacts of the Project: the increased traffic at Exit 4; increased noise and air pollution, increased nighttime artificial lighting; and increased storm water runoff, thereby causing flooding and pollution of streams and rivers in Randolph.

For the reasons stated above, and in the interest of Randolph and its surrounding communities, we request that you withdraw any support of the Green Mountain Center and, further, that you oppose it in any future actions.

Visit Exit 4 Open Space for more information on this development and a group of citizens who oppose it.
