Step 1: Create your Account

A student and a contributor need to create a financial aid account to sign the application. If a student is considered an independent, only the student needs an account. Washington State students can either complete the FAFSA OR WASFA. You will only need to complete one. See which one is right for you below.

Documents Needed to Complete Financial Aid Application:

All information remains confidential and is not shared—used only for the online application. 

FAFSA Account: Students create a FSA ID account to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students who are US citizens, legal permanent US residents, and students with qualifying visas can complete the FAFSA.

Go to studentaid.gov and click Create Account.

WASFA Account: Students create a WASFA account to complete the WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid). Students who are undocumented with or without DACA and who have been living in Washington State for at least one year prior to starting college can complete the WASFA.

Go to https://wsac.wa.gov/WASFAelig and complete the survey to see if you're eligible.

Step 2: Complete your Application - opens january 2024

FAFSA: Sign-in with your FSA ID account to complete your FAFSA application. If you need help, check out the videos at https://www.youtube.com/@FederalStudentAid.

Go to https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa and login with your FSA ID to complete the FAFSA.

WASFA: Sign-in to your WASFA account or create an account to complete the application for the year you are going to start college.

Go to https://wsac.wa.gov/wasfa-returning-user to complete the WASFA application
