About the Foothills Wanderers Orienteering Club (FWOC):

FWOC is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run, sports club (founded in 1977) that provides orienteering

training and compe��on opportuni�es for its members and promotes the development of orienteering

in southern Alberta. FWOC organizes orienteering ac�vi�es year-round (training events, beginner

programs, and compe��ons). FWOC’s annual membership is approximately 800 (age range 2-91 yrs.)

FWOC’s successful junior orienteering program, SOGO Adventure Running, delivers weekly programs,

seasonally, for kids aged 2-17, school and group programming, summer camps and seasonal events.

SOGO employs over 20 part-�me staff seasonally.

FWOC is affiliated with the Alberta Orienteering Associa�on, and by extension with Orienteering

Canada and the Interna�onal Orienteering Federa�on.

The Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for a mo�vated self-starter who excels at working with volunteers in a not-for-profit

environment. We are looking for an individual who wants to help grow the club and the sport of

orienteering. The employee will work primarily from home and will a�end orienteering events in the

Calgary area on occasion. The employee will work closely with the FWOC Board of Directors and its

relevant commi�ees. The employee will also interact with current and poten�al club members, parents

of youth par�cipants, schools, and current and poten�al partner organiza�ons.

This is a full-�me permanent posi�on based in Calgary, with a salary range between $45,000 - $60,000

per year based on experience. The posi�on will ideally begin in March 2025. The hours of work (40

hours per week) are flexible; some weekend and evening work will be required on occasion for events

and mee�ngs. The key responsibili�es performed and listed below will vary by season, with an

es�mated overall percentage for the year shown.

Key Responsibili�es:

1. Club Program Management - 60%

a. Working with various commi�ees, assist with the coordina�on of FWOC's orienteering

programs, including SOGO Adventure Running

b. Coordinate membership, program and event registra�on processes

c. Develop and implement new programs and ini�a�ves to grow club membership and

par�cipa�on

2. Club Administra�on du�es - 20%

a. Finances: Assist Club Treasurer with day-to-day bookkeeping and payroll processes

b. HR: Coordinate recrui�ng, hiring, training and ongoing HR processes for SOGO staff

(seasonal and permanent)

3. Governance, Strategic Planning & Monitoring - 10%

a. Assist with FWOC Board budget planning and monitoring

b. Oversee adherence to good governance standards by ensuring that all club governing

documents (policies, terms of reference, by-laws, etc) are up-to-date and effec�ve

c. Work with the FWOC Board to implement the club’s strategic plan; priori�ze project

planning to ensure alignment with the strategic plan; monitor, and report progress

towards the plan’s objec�ves

d. Contribute to long-term planning for SOGO Adventure Running and the strategic growth

of the program, in alignment with FWOC’s long-term goals

e. Work with key individuals to ensure strategic alignment and op�mal opera�onal

efficiencies between FWOC and SOGO Adventure Running

4. Communica�ons and Marke�ng - 10%

a. Develop and implement a long-term promo�on and communica�ons plan (including

social media) for FWOC (including SOGO Adventure Running)

b. Develop and implement key promo�onal opportuni�es and partnerships

c. Communicate with club members and poten�al members to grow memberships, retain

members and enhance commitment to the club

Qualifica�ons:

● Experience in program management, preferably in a sports or recrea�on se�ng

● Understanding of good governance principles and their implementa�on

● Experience with event planning and execu�on

● Strong organiza�onal and leadership skills

● Proficiency in Microso� Office and Google Workspace

● Ability to independently priori�ze tasks in order to meet the overall goals of the posi�on - on

budget and with minimal supervision

● Excellent communica�on and interpersonal abili�es

● Flexible and posi�ve, with behavior that embodies the True Sport Principles

Addi�onal Valuable A�ributes:

● Knowledge of the sport of orienteering

● Experience working with volunteers in a not-for-profit environment

● Academic background in sport or recrea�on management

● Social media and communica�ons management experience

● Promo�ons and marke�ng experience

● Substan�ve connec�ons within the Calgary sport community

Repor�ng Structure:

The employee will report to the FWOC Board via the President or an appointed Board member.
