but I have one complaint that’s just bugging me. When Richter summons his familiar it’s established he can combine his and the villages mana to cast and instead of just drinking a mana potion to get back the required mana he lets the mist barrier lapse. I just couldn’t help but think about that over and over during the bugbear raid.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really give this 3.5 stars but I'll round up since that is not an option.
This book is a very quick and enjoyable read. The first book of the series is hamfisted and the author makes some improvement in the second book of the series. I'm interested in reading the remainder of the series but I hope the author finds a bit better pacing. This book starts strong but the second half is a bit plodding. The author took the unenviable task of trying to describe a dungeon crawl filled with traps. There are some decent fight scenes sprinkled in the book but again some run a bit long. I think the problem is the author again has not found the right balance of game world and story telling. One major complaint is that character level of enemies does not seem to correlate with their strength in any meaningful way.
I'm giving the book a 4 because the characters are starting to develop and I see promise in the series. The mix of popular culture into a fantasy fiction book found a better rhythm in this book. The references in the first book were often very distracting and didn't fit with the character of Richter. Or maybe I'm just growing used to Richter saying random idioms that feel out of place for shock value. The read is enjoyable and the audiobook narration continues to be great. I both read and listened to this book.
My one complaint about the narration is the reading off Yoshi. Maybe Aleron Kong intended this character to be read as a very stereotypical martial arts master but the words on the page do not read the same as the narrator inflections. It is a bit offensive to hear.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great read, building on everything that was enjoyable in the first book. Aleron Kong is clearly growing as an author. He keeps the reader's interest throughout the book and as the character has grown, as the stage has widened, the challenges have exceeded any growth by a wide margin. The author has succeeded in maintaining dramatic tension. The character seems to have more to lose, to be on the precipice of greater success or heartache with each chapter, which is a nice balancing act. In many stories in the genre, the mechanics overwhelm or the gains become increasingly pointless. Not so, here.
Aleron Kong has avoided many of the pitfalls of the genre, deftly balancing character growth and world-building with challenge that adds to the dramatic tension. This is a nice trick, considering we generally know the conventions of the genre, which usually means we know what to expect next.. but not so much here. Forging is like watching a poker tournament where the game started with a spotlight on one table, where the tournament has 128 tables with 8 players each. In the first book the main character made it past the first round. He has some winnings from the first round but the stakes just keep increasing. In poker, as they say, you're playing your opponents. Here, in round two, every one seated at the table was a winner from the first round. His opponents are smarter. There are familiar characters from the first round, but interesting new characters from this table, and some glimpse into the challenges he'll face if he makes it past this round. The outcome is becoming more highly speculative.
Every now and then the main characters play smart for a few hands and then the author has them go all in, putting everything on the table. It's fun to watch the characters lose a hand, now and then, watch the interplay between the characters as they fold a hand or raise the ante. It's fun watching the author double the blinds. It's fun to watch the author throw an interesting prize into the center of the table that changes the game ...
I'm looking forward to Alliances, the next installment in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars This series is going places.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really liked the first installment, and I really like how things are going forward. By now, my finger is on a permanent auto-push setting for my Kindel's "buy now" button whenever notifications of a sequel flash up. Ate up the first one and sure hope the author will keep on making these for years and years.
The setting is typical game universe, that's not what makes it unique. What really hooks me to these is the tone of the novel. If you're in for some male-hero adventuring with a clean, riveting storyline, strong friendships, likeable characters and a thoroughly positive attitude, then this is for you. Mind, this is not a bunnies-in-sunshine setting. There's strife and death, only it's the "we will conquer" type instead of "I'm going to kill you all". And the author's sense of humor can be equally dry and saucy. Really, a rare read.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDamn it author, why'd you have to write so good.
The story just gets better and better but I need sleep!
How can I do that with the rest of your series siren call luring me to my doom!
And to make matters worse you added a cute couple to ship for, does your villainy know no bounds!
