Genie for Hire: A Biff Andromeda Mystery Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Genie for Hire: A Biff Andromeda Mystery is a private eye novel with a paranormal, urban fantasy twist. Biff is an ancient genie in a buff body, working as a private investigator in a twenty-first century Miami suburb. He uses his magical powers to investigate a case that begins with a set of missing negatives, and morphs into something much more deadly, especially when he realizes that the dangerous female genie he has loved and lost over centuries has become involved. Photographer Sveta Pshkov has a problem. She took a series of boudoir photos of a young Russian woman, believing the woman wanted them for her husband. When her workroom is burglarized and the negatives stolen, she comes to Biff’s agency, down the hall from her studio. Unable to resist a damsel in distress, Biff takes the case. He discovers, however, that the woman is dead, and her husband, a Russian mobster, is missing. Aided by a squirrel named Raki, a sylph who manifests as a white butterfly, and the alluring and dangerous woman of his dreams, Biff struggles against ancient demons and modern monsters. With his keen sense of smell, his ability to turn into a wisp of vapor, and his sarcastic wit, Biff battles his romantic obsession and a pack of ruthless criminals to bring this case to a satisfying conclusion.

Editorial Reviews

Review

What fun! Last night I finished a charming story from the silver-tongued Neil Plakcy, GENIE FOR HIRE, the first book in a new cozy series (with a twist).

GENIE FOR HIRE features Biff Andromeda, a buff young-looking private eye with exquisite manners and a very nice conscience. Although Biff has been around for a few hundred years, he tackles some very modern problems with social media, pornography, and the Russian mafia.
Though no golden retrievers are found bounding through the pages, don't despair, there are just as amusing anthropomorphic pets.

For an easy read with an uplift, read GENIE FOR HIRE.

Thanks for reading! I’d love to stay in touch with you. Visit my home page at www.mahubooks.com, where you can subscribe to one or more of my newsletters. I hope you'll also consider following me at Goodreads to see what I'm reading, and subscribe to my author page at Facebook where I post news and giveaways.

I've wanted to be an author since I was about sixteen, when a high school assignment on A Separate Peace showed me how powerful writing can be. At the University of Pennsylvania I studied creative writing with Philip Roth and Carlos Fuentes; I went on to receive my MFA from Florida International University.

My first published novel was Mahu, about a Honolulu homicide detective dragged out of the closet during a tough case. I put a lot of myself into Kimo Kanapa'aka, the hero, and yet he’s very much his own character, and much better than I am! He has had a powerful hold on my imagination for many years. I love writing about him and hope to keep doing so for a long time. He’s also the source of my favorite reader question. A few years ago, someone emailed to ask if he was circumcised.

My first reaction was “Man, I’ll bet Stephen King doesn’t get questions like that.” But then, his are probably even weirder. I went online and did some research and discovered that at the time Kimo was born, hospital circumcisions were common. So there you go.

My path to publication was a long and checkered one, as is the case with many authors. My first published stories were magazine erotica, and I still like to keep my hand in (no pun intended) with that kind of writing. But for the most part now I write mystery and romance—all my books seem to have both those elements, though in different proportions.

I began writing the golden retriever mysteries because I spent so much time walking my golden, Samwise (yes, I’m a Tolkien geek). He had so many funny habits and such a strong personality that I just knew I had to write a book that featured a dog like him. (Fortunately, Sam had no habit of finding dead bodies.)

I live in Hollywood, Florida now, with my partner and our golden retrievers, Brody and Griffin.

Private Eye Biff Andromeda uses his magical powers as a genie to track down a killer in the Aventura area north of the Miami-Dade County boundary. Hired by a photographer to retrieve stolen files, he never expects to end up solving her murder instead. Sveta is more than the average family photographer, which he soon learns as he delves into her associates. Before he can open his legendary Third Eye, he’s awash in Russian mobsters, smugglers, and muscled henchmen. With a squirrel for a companion and his lady love turning up unexpectedly, Biff has his hands full. Will his powers be enough to bring down the bad guys, especially when one of them has tapped into an evil and powerful force? This story will both entertain and entrance you. The combination of magical elements with a solid mystery is a charmer. You’ll definitely want more of this clever sleuth and his memorable sidekicks.

I normally love the work of Neil Plakcy. Just about anything he writes, I'm confident I'll enjoy. With perhaps the exception of his more erotic selections, being a lesbian, I don't go there. But everything else I have enjoyed. But this book really really needs a good editor. Not just for the typos either. The story wonders around, does he know that, does he not. Wait a minute, why is he confused here, he figured that out in the last chapter, and so on. Plakcy is a good enough writer that he can hold your interest even with the fatal flaws in this book. But if he would just put the editing effort in, he could have a winner here too. Unfortunately, as is, this is a most frustrating read, and probably not worth your effort.

Get ready for some great entertainment with Genie for Hire: A Biff Andromeda Mystery. Neil S. Plakcy, an Amazon bestselling author, aims high for creativity as well as originality with this unique and engrossing story.

If you're familiar with Plakcy's clever style of storytelling, you know how adept he is at putting together mysteries that, even while dealing with the subjects of murder, both entertain and amuse. He takes this a step further with Genie by adding a paranormal twist to an already intriguing narrative.

Imagine a centuries-old genie named Biff, but young, fit and handsome looking, who runs a private investigator's business out of Miami, Florida. A good genie at heart, he never uses his power to hurt or cause trouble for the humans he works around. He also can't do anything good for anyone unless they actually wish for it. A lot of women, and even some men hit on him all the time, but he never takes advantage. With his supernatural abilities, and with the wishes and blessings of his clients, he's one of the best private eyes around. Biff works closely with a cop named Jimmy who knows Biff is different, and shall one say, very talented, but doesn't know quite how.

The story begins with Biff acquiring a client, an attractive female Russian photographer named Sveta. Sveta's problems turn out to be a big can of worms though, some of which she's brought on herself. As we move along in the investigation, Biff finds himself in the middle of not only a Russian mafia power play, but high-stakes drugs and guns money and a twisted international child pornography ring.

Add to all this another centuries-old genie, a gorgeous female named Farishta. Biff and Farishta are off-and-on lovers, but she doesn't want to settle down like Biff does. And unlike Biff, Farishta likes mischief and trouble. Although more powerful than Biff, she finds herself helplessly aging for the first time in literally ages, and losing her unique power which she gets from water. Her being a water genie is sometimes a problem for Biff because he cannot tolerate water and it has a painful and power-draining effect on him. To Biff's surprise, Farishta's troubles end up being intertwined with the case he's working on with his client, Sveta.

As the story continues, we're introduced to more characters--an adorable squirrel named Raki and a Sylph butterfly genie who both end up helping Biff solve his case. But there's also trouble, a very powerful ancient demon who is controlling some of the humans involved and threatening both Biff and Farishta. As we come in contact here and there with these old and evil powers, a distinct creepy element emerges.

Genie for Hire: A Biff Andromeda Mystery is now available in audiobook. Just go to Audible.com or iTunes and search for the title or for the author's name, Neil S. Plakcy. You'll love the supernatural twists and surprises interjected into what is already a wonderfully entertaining tale.
