12 Surprising Job Interview Tips Paraphrased from article written by Jon Youshaei / Forbes Magazine For complete article, click here: http://tinyurl.com/jsq2n5s

1. Research Earnings Calls, Quarterly Reports, and Blog Posts. In other words, look past the company homepage. Dig inside to find out more about the company, what makes them unique and what you can do to help them stand apart from the competition.

2. Use Google Alerts. Google Alerts allows you to keep up with company news in real time without having to search about current events, which can be time consuming. Updates on the company will be sent to you via email anytime a news story appears for the specific term that you set the alert to.

3. Use Social Sweepster to Clean Your Facebook and Twitter Accounts Anytime you are interviewing, know that 91% of employers are searching for red flags through social media. Using Social Sweepster will help detect items that may make a bad impression of you.

4. Schedule for Tuesday at 10:30 am Research has shown that the best time to interview is at 10:30 am on Tuesday and is the best time to catch your potential supervisor in their best mood. Also, it is best to take the earliest time slot available, as many times hiring decisions are made early on in the process.

5. Craft Your "Story Statement" Show potential employers that you are a human being, not just a professional!

6. Wear a Subtle Fashion Statement Wearing something that represents your culture or background can often become an opportunity to discuss something more personal about you, giving you that opportunity to connect one on one with potential employers. Be sure to be subtle and tasteful and that you keep in mind the image of company that you are interviewing with.

7. Prepare for the "What's Your Weakness?" Question Tell what your struggles are, but then tell your employer how you work to improve upon those weaknesses. Your potential employers will like that you were honest and appreciate that you know how to turn your weaknesses into strengths.

8. Brainstorm 3 "PAR" Anecdotes Board of Elections Training The Guilford County Board of Elections will provide advanced training to citizens serving or interested in becoming election officials or poll workers. For additional information, contact Megan Varnadore at mlvarnadore@ gtcc.edu, or (336) 334-4822 ext. 53024. Course Code: LEX-4000-303 Date: July 25-August 29, Monday, 6p-9p Location: CTC-Community Training Center, Jamestown Campus Room #: 115 Instructor: D. Lassiter Cost: $78 Course Code: LEX-4000-304 Date: July 27-August 31, Wednesday, 9a-12p Location: CEC-Con Ed Center, Greensboro Campus Room #: TBA Instructor: D. Lassiter Cost: $78

Prepare to tell stories that 1) Identify the Problem, 2) Explain the Action you took to solve it, and 3) tell the Results that occurred.

9. During the Interview, Think Aloud on Analytical Questions Be sure to talk through your thinking, show the interviewer how you got to your answer.

10. Ask Questions that Kill Two Birds with One Stone This is a great opportunity to ask questions while also revealing something new about yourself.

11. Grow a Backbone & Ask This Final Question It takes courage and boldness, but before your interview ends, ask "Have I said anything in this interview or given you any other reason to doubt that I am a good fit for this role?

12. Email a Personalized Thank You Note

Be sure to thank your interviewer. This not only makes a good impression, but it keeps you on the employers mind and also opens the door to dialogue even if you don't get the job.

Very Vanilla Frosting • • • •

3 cups granulated sugar 3 oz. (2/3 cup) unbleached all-purpose flour 3 cups whole milk 2/3 cup heavy cream

• 1-1/2 Tbs. vanilla paste or pure vanilla extract • 24 oz. (3 cups) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2inch pieces

In a small bowl, whisk the sugar and flour, breaking up any lumps of flour. In a 4-quart heavy-duty saucepan, bring the milk and cream to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce to medium low and whisk in the flour and sugar a little at a time until incorporated. Increase the heat to medium high, bring the mixture to a boil, and cook, whisking frequently, until thickened to a pudding-like consistency, 10 to 11 minutes. Strain through a medium-mesh sieve into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on high speed until cool, 7 to 8 minutes. Reduce to low and add the vanilla. Add the butter a few pieces at a time, increasing the speed to medium after most of the butter is added. Stop the mixer after all of the butter is incorporated; the frosting will look chunky. Let it sit at room temperature for at least 2 hours and up to overnight. With the whisk attachment, whip the frosting on medium-high speed to emulsify and incorporate air; this will take up to 20 minutes. The frosting should become more pale and voluminous. If too soft, place the bowl in the refrigerator to chill slightly, then beat again. If too firm, set the bowl over a pot of simmering water and beat until spreadable. If at any point during frosting it looks broken, simply rewhip it. You can’t overbeat it. Recipe from NYC's Baked / Fine Cooking Magazine. DANCE, FITNESS, & HEALTH

Sift the flours, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl. Set Fitness aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the water, milk, and buttermilk. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and shortening on medium speed until creamy, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the sugar and vanilla, and beat on medium speed until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Scrape down the bowl, add the egg, and beat until just combined. On low speed, add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the water mixture in two additions, beginning and ending with the flour. Increase the speed to medium for a few seconds to incorporate. Scrape down the bowl, then mix on low speed for a few more seconds. In a medium bowl with a hand mixer, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar on medium speed until soft peaks form; do not overbeat. With a silicone spatula, gently fold the egg whites into the batter. Divide the batter among the prepared pans, and smooth with a small offset spatula. Bake, rotating the pans halfway through the baking time, until a toothpick inserted in the center of each cake comes out clean, 35 to 45 minutes. Transfer the cakes to a wire rack and let cool for 20 minutes. Invert the cakes onto the rack, remove from the pans, and let cool completely. Remove the parchment. Frost with Very Vanilla Frosting or with another favorite frosting.
