Wow! Hard to know the fact from the fiction in this engaging read. This book took me to the orient with all of the tastes and scents coming to life. A history lesson as well, as previously I knew nothing about this invasion of China. I will be thinking of young Bill for many days to come.

Once I started reading I just couldnt put it down.
The Missionary's Son was not a book I would ordinarily pick up but I followed a recomendation and I certainly was not dissapointed. I felt like I was right there in China with Bill the imagery was amazing.

I've just finished reading 'The Missionary's Son' by R.G. Harmon (kindle edition). What a great read. This book brings the highs and Lows of the Japanese invasion into Shanghai China through the eyes of Bill a 10 year boy. It brought tears to this reader. Highly recommended.

Like other readers reviews I found once I'd got into the initial pages of this book it gripped my attention so much I just couldn't put it down! Also the ignorance of the profound affect of the Japanese invasion of China left me feeling very guilty. The lad Bill goes through the sort of education religious, cruelty and ethnic most of us would never experience and travelling with him leaves the reader at times close to tears! The profound affect on him and those close to him is at times joyful,in his love for his surrogate Chinese mother, maddening at a father whose concern for others came before his own Son, and gobsmacking at the cruelty of one race against those who are unfortunate enough to meet up with them. Overridingly the sadness of a little boy who only wanted his fathers love and never got it leaves the reader sapped of all sympathy for religion and those who use it as a substitute for looking after their own family first! A very good read I'd recommend.

Great story with everything a reader looks for....Felt like you were really in China, smelling the food. Looking through Bills eyes...afraid, lonely, happy, sad.
