Welcome to my language and literacy wiki! I am delighted you have chosen to visit. As your colleague it is my hope that as you navigate through this site the connection between the various components of literacy become evident in a practical and creative way.
By examining the literacy process through the sharing of activities, information, and resources, hopefully the significance of language and other parts in the literacy process will be understood!
The pages of this wiki are devoted to each of the language arts including: listening, speaking, viewing, reading, and writing. Enjoy!
Purpose of Wiki:
The purpose of this wiki is to demonstrate and explain the importance for educators, myself included, the need for a continued commitment to the goal of helping children achieve literacy. In a nation where it is estimated that many of our children are reading BELOW proficient levels (Children of the Code, 2011), instructional time continuing to dwindle, and increasing reliance on high stakes testing, it is imperative that as educators we step back and evaluate our pedagogical methods in literacy.
It is my hope that this wiki will share tips, information, and activities that will serve as a resource in bridging the disconnect between the classroom and home, the student and parent, and the teacher and student. I also hope this wiki will inspire you, my colleague, to pursue and achieve literacy across the curriculum through a variety of instructional approaches.
To demonstrate the concept of literacy across the curriculum, throughout this wiki I will be utilizing the social studies standard below in a way that highlights the five components of literacy. I hope this wiki gets your creativity going while also encouraging you to remain committed to enhancing literacy of all children!!
GPS Social Studies Standard
SS2H1: The student will read and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history.

Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms).
SS2G2: The student will describe the cultural and geographic systems associated with the historical figures in SS2H1.
Identify specific locations significant to the life and times of each historic figure on a political map.
Describe how place (physical and human characteristics) had an impact on the lives of each historic figure.
Describe how each historic figure adapted to and was influenced by his/her environment.
Trace examples of travel and movement of these historic figures and their ideas across time.
Describe how the region in which these historic figures lived affected their lives and compare these regions which the student lives.
Okay, Elizabeth. I have viewed the completed pages/newsletter and still, I enjoy very much! I have a strong feeling that this project is going to materialize into something much greater than you originally hoped for. This I call brilliant! I trust other commentators feel the same. It has all of the makings of a brilliant masterpiece for use in early childhood education development.
God bless you..... keep up the good work
