About the author

www.rlwren.com
A fourth generation Californian and Oakland resident for over 80 years–though recently moved to Lafayette, CA, novelist Richard L. Wren took a leap late in life, publishing his first mystery novel at age 85: CASEY’S SLIP (Poor Richard Publishers, 2011), available from Amazon.com, through your favorite bookstore, and as an ebook. Wren is currently working on a sequel.
His second book, released in 2012, is entitled JOSHUA’S REVENGE (Poor Richard Publishers), also available from Amazon.com and as an ebook.
November 2014 saw the release of Wren’s third novel, JUSTICE FOR JOSHUA (Poor Richard Publishers). Buy it on Amazon.com, order through your favorite bookstore, or look for it as an ebook.
Since then, he's published two more in 2016: MURDER MADE LEGAL (featuring Casey and Smitty from CASEY'S SLIP), and another Joshua Rogan adventure-mystery, JOSHUA: JUDGE & JURY.
For those wanting to publish their own work, Wren composed a short booklet of some of the most practical advice (in a short form) you can find anywhere for writing and publishing a novel — also applicable to non-fiction books. Based on what he learned after extensive research and practical experience, he published two editions of A Practical Guide to Writing & Publishing a Novel.: The Keep It Simple and Successful (K.I.S.S.) Way, one in 2012, and a revised edition in early 2015.
Later that same year, he teamed up with his publicity coach, author Loyd Auerbach, to couple that material with Auerbach's writing on book promotion and author publicity (note that Auerbach has thousands of media appearances). The combined book, published in late 2015, is SELF-PUBLISHING: IT AIN'T ROCKET SCIENCE, available on Amazon.com in print or ebook formats. It has been adopted as required reading for a graduate level course (and for non-academic courses).
Wren had a 61 year career with New York Life Insurance Co., specializing in Estate Tax planning for business owners. Throughout that career, he was a nationally recognized speaker on the use of life insurance in estate planning.
Born in Watsonville, CA, his family moved to Oakland when he was three, and he’s lived there ever since. He is a graduate of Oakland Technical High School and holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Armstrong College, Berkeley, CA (1949). Additionally, he has a post graduate degree of CLU from Wharton. (similar to CPA in accounting.)
Richard Wren and his wife Betty – his high school sweetheart – are about to celebrate their 65th Anniversary. They’ve raised four children and have nine grandchildren. He’s been quite active in the Oakland community, having served in the past on the Board of the Oakland Symphony, and currently on the Board of Directors of the Woodminster Theater (for 35+ years).
He started writing “Casey’s Slip” at age 82. “I’ve always been a story teller since my 4 daughters were small children,” said Richard. “Every night I’d challenge them to give me a word and I’d make up a story. Example: They give me ‘Hamburger,’ and I make up a story about a hamburger that dreamed of becoming a New York steak. I still use that technique. My stories are designed for pure entertainment. I do not have a whole story in mind when I start. I let the story develop itself, just as life does. “
As with many other fiction writers, he draws from his own personal experiences, people he’s met and places he knows. “My wife and I have owned four sailboats and sailed the California Coast as far south as the Mexican border. I have a friend that has been a well-known Hell’s Angel for many years. I have a son-in-law that was an Oakland detective, a daughter that’s approaching a black belt in Chinese Martial Arts, and a friend that was a top FBI agent. I also have a friend that was an unlicensed sailboat deliverer on the West Coast and an acquaintance that owns a very famous Chinese Restaurant in San Francisco.”
Basing characters on people he knows, and locations in his books on places he has spent time in gives his stories a sense of reality. “In my secong book (Joshua’s Revenge) the opening takes place in Yosemite. I’ve hiked all over the Yosemite back country from the valley, to Voglesang to The Devil’s Postpile. Spent many summers in the Valley and recently interviewed the Yosemite Park Superintendent for background purposes.”
Wren has also taken the time to go beyond what he’s experienced in his long life. “I’ve interviewed employees in both the Oakland and San Francisco Morgues” for example.
Richard L. Wren is a great example of someone who has reinvented himself and his career – especially so late in life. He’s also a model for would-be novelists, both old and young.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2016When I first read the summary and noticed the Asian martial arts influence I was admittedly expecting the book to have a protagonist that had that sort of Bruce Lee nothing-stands-a-chance type of quality, but I pleasantly realized as I progressed into the book that the protagonist isn’t some undefeatable hero, but a person with varying weaknesses that contrast with his many strengths, combing to create an overall realistic persona. Basically, he endures some genuine hardships and true trials of his character throughout the read which I personally think adds a great feeling of depth to the overall book as well as a sense of realism that makes him seem dynamic in nature, and in some scenes, even quite relatable to me as a reader.
As well as this, I think the plot itself is quite unique and once I became immersed into the book I found that many of the scenes were quite unpredictable as they transitioned into the next – which, in turn, gives the overall read a strong thriller and page-turner type of vibe, that I personally think is executed very well essentially from start to finish. Overall, I enjoyed the read and I think that author Richard Wren truly has the appropriate writing talent for the mystery/thriller genre. I hope to see more in the near future.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2012Joshua's Revenge is a fast moving adventure story. The journey begins in Yosemite with our hero Joshua working as a Ranger, He's asked to investigate some wrong doings going on in the park and the adventure begins.(I don't do spoilers) The author has created interesting characters, and good story development, it is a grabber from the beginning to the end.
Mr Wren's second book(Casey's Slip #1) and he just seems to improve with each book, a sequel to Joshua is due out around October and I can't wait . If you want an adventerous read I would recomment Joshua's Revenge .
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2018Great action fast paced. Good flow interesting characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2013I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Wren's second novel Joshua's Revenge. It kept me captivated until the end. I am looking forward to his next Novel and hope it will be published soon!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2013Richard L. Wrens second book was a great read! If you have been to Yosemite and/or San Franciscos Chinatown, you will be captivated with the plot. Well researched and well written. Enjoy!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2017This book was great, it kept me wanting more. Loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2018Sadly, I wannabe author of a book that is neither interesting nor gives any facts. I grew up with Richard Wren's daughters.(their real last name is Uren), they were beautiful, but stood in line, as did his wife. He ruled their home with an iron fist. He was a really nasty man who shamed Jews in the neighborhood. I remember all of this as if it were just yesterday. There was one day when I was so afraid of his anger toward the Jew who sold newspapers across the strreet from the elementary school, that I hid in his shop. There was a secret hiding place there, and I only came out after he caught his bus and went away
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2013JOSHUA'S REVENGE by Richard L. Wren, a new author, is a story about a Park Ranger in Yosemite Park who is also a world champion martial arts expert. You have to accept this premise first. Then he is thrown into investigation of bear deaths in the park that leads to kidnapping, murder and Chinese gangs. You have to accept this. Then he is the lead investigator over all agencies that cross paths. You have to accept that. It was too much for this reviewer. Wren can write but this one lacks depth, moves to fast and is often stretching the readers beliefs. Slow down, make the characters more human. Disappointing.
