About the author

www.rlwren.com
A fourth generation Californian and Oakland resident for over 80 years–though recently moved to Lafayette, CA, novelist Richard L. Wren took a leap late in life, publishing his first mystery novel at age 85: CASEY’S SLIP (Poor Richard Publishers, 2011), available from Amazon.com, through your favorite bookstore, and as an ebook. Wren is currently working on a sequel.
His second book, released in 2012, is entitled JOSHUA’S REVENGE (Poor Richard Publishers), also available from Amazon.com and as an ebook.
November 2014 saw the release of Wren’s third novel, JUSTICE FOR JOSHUA (Poor Richard Publishers). Buy it on Amazon.com, order through your favorite bookstore, or look for it as an ebook.
Since then, he's published two more in 2016: MURDER MADE LEGAL (featuring Casey and Smitty from CASEY'S SLIP), and another Joshua Rogan adventure-mystery, JOSHUA: JUDGE & JURY.
For those wanting to publish their own work, Wren composed a short booklet of some of the most practical advice (in a short form) you can find anywhere for writing and publishing a novel — also applicable to non-fiction books. Based on what he learned after extensive research and practical experience, he published two editions of A Practical Guide to Writing & Publishing a Novel.: The Keep It Simple and Successful (K.I.S.S.) Way, one in 2012, and a revised edition in early 2015.
Later that same year, he teamed up with his publicity coach, author Loyd Auerbach, to couple that material with Auerbach's writing on book promotion and author publicity (note that Auerbach has thousands of media appearances). The combined book, published in late 2015, is SELF-PUBLISHING: IT AIN'T ROCKET SCIENCE, available on Amazon.com in print or ebook formats. It has been adopted as required reading for a graduate level course (and for non-academic courses).
Wren had a 61 year career with New York Life Insurance Co., specializing in Estate Tax planning for business owners. Throughout that career, he was a nationally recognized speaker on the use of life insurance in estate planning.
Born in Watsonville, CA, his family moved to Oakland when he was three, and he’s lived there ever since. He is a graduate of Oakland Technical High School and holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Armstrong College, Berkeley, CA (1949). Additionally, he has a post graduate degree of CLU from Wharton. (similar to CPA in accounting.)
Richard Wren and his wife Betty – his high school sweetheart – are about to celebrate their 65th Anniversary. They’ve raised four children and have nine grandchildren. He’s been quite active in the Oakland community, having served in the past on the Board of the Oakland Symphony, and currently on the Board of Directors of the Woodminster Theater (for 35+ years).
He started writing “Casey’s Slip” at age 82. “I’ve always been a story teller since my 4 daughters were small children,” said Richard. “Every night I’d challenge them to give me a word and I’d make up a story. Example: They give me ‘Hamburger,’ and I make up a story about a hamburger that dreamed of becoming a New York steak. I still use that technique. My stories are designed for pure entertainment. I do not have a whole story in mind when I start. I let the story develop itself, just as life does. “
As with many other fiction writers, he draws from his own personal experiences, people he’s met and places he knows. “My wife and I have owned four sailboats and sailed the California Coast as far south as the Mexican border. I have a friend that has been a well-known Hell’s Angel for many years. I have a son-in-law that was an Oakland detective, a daughter that’s approaching a black belt in Chinese Martial Arts, and a friend that was a top FBI agent. I also have a friend that was an unlicensed sailboat deliverer on the West Coast and an acquaintance that owns a very famous Chinese Restaurant in San Francisco.”
Basing characters on people he knows, and locations in his books on places he has spent time in gives his stories a sense of reality. “In my secong book (Joshua’s Revenge) the opening takes place in Yosemite. I’ve hiked all over the Yosemite back country from the valley, to Voglesang to The Devil’s Postpile. Spent many summers in the Valley and recently interviewed the Yosemite Park Superintendent for background purposes.”
Wren has also taken the time to go beyond what he’s experienced in his long life. “I’ve interviewed employees in both the Oakland and San Francisco Morgues” for example.
Richard L. Wren is a great example of someone who has reinvented himself and his career – especially so late in life. He’s also a model for would-be novelists, both old and young.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2015I was sold on this book from the description alone. I went to high school and college in the SF Bay area so was anxious to revisit many of those places through the pages of a good novel. I wasn't disappointed. Author Richard Wren has given us a combination thriller, crime, adventure and dramatic novel that grabs hold from the first pages and doesn't let go. Even though I don't believe that revenge benefits anyone, it's hard not to sympathize with Josh's plight as what he holds most dear has been threatened. This was an amazing tale from a talented writer and I am looking forward to reading further stories from Wren.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2015I have to admit, that when I read in the description that Josh's "well-kept secret of being a world champion martial arts and ninja expert," I almost didn't give this book a try. I mean, if you're a world champion, then it's probably not a secret at all, right? But because I was looking at this book based on the recommendation of a friend that shares the same intrests in books that I do I decided to go ahead and take a chance. And I'm pretty glad I did. The author doesn't waste any time in getting the reader involved and interested in the story line. Pretty much from the first chapter on I was engrossed in the story enough that I usually wound up reading more than I intended to. Definitely the mark of a good book. It's not overly long or drawn out and the plot progresses smoothly to a satisfying conclusion. All in all I would rate this solid story four stars out of five and I would definitely recommend it to others who are into this type of suspense/thriller story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2015I finished this book in three sittings, which for me rarely happens. I read almost every day, but I'm the kind of reader that usually just reads a chapter, maybe two, before going to sleep at night. The pace that I tore through this suspense thriller was definitely unusual for me, but I got into the story so much that I couldn't put the book down. I admit that at first I thought the plot sounded generic and cheesy, but when I got into the story I was sucked in. Five stars for Justice for Joshua.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2017This is my third novel from Mr. Wren and his writing has improved with each new release. The protaganist, Joshua, is a marshal arts expert and, while the story is based on his actions, the reader is not constantly confronted with these abilities. In fact, the novel addresses the main character's thought process and how he learns more about himself and others as he resolves the situation around him. The ending leaves the possibility of future novels and I look forward to them.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2018Joshua, super park ranger, goes on the hunt after his wife is shot by a stray bullet from a gangster. He goes to Oakland, and starts investigating. Every step he takes gets him into bigger problems. Taking on the gang, the cops, and anyone else in his way, is just a bit more than he expected.
Not bad. Joshua is still too perfect to be true, but he does show a few flaws this time, and his mere presence doesn't make everything magically better.
Hoping for a third book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2014Richard Wren has done it again!!! Anybody who knows the Bay Area will be locked in immediately to the plot and the cast of characters. Mr. Wren did his homework!! Great read!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2015"Justice for Joshua" is a wonderful, fast-paced, action-packed page turner that crackles with energy and verve from beginning to end. The story, about a Yosemite Park ranger’s quest to find out who nearly killed his wife in a drive-by shooting as well as the motive behind it is so riveting I literally couldn’t put the novel down. Cliché or not, that’s how engrossed I was in wondering what would happen next!
Like an artist in fierce command of his palette, Wren, using words rather than color as tools of expression, paints a vivid and precisely detailed canvas that teems with a gallery of unforgettable characters. Whether it’s his strong-willed wife Fern, driver/sidekick Hal or dangerous gang leader Ramon Navarese, all are rendered with equal finesse and facility.
Wren’s ear for creating fluid, realistic dialogue, as sharp as it is wry, is especially outstanding. There were so many times when I was reading this book that I kept thinking it would make a great film or episodic TV series.
"Justice for Joshua" was such a pleasure to read that it almost pains me to bring up the faint sprinkling of typos and occasional wrong word choices (i.e. “taught” muscles when it should be taut) scattered throughout the book. But regardless, Wren’s suspense/thriller is so good that to avoid reading it because of these slight lapses in copy-editing is to miss out on a marvelous and highly enjoyable read. Well done!
*I received this book for an honest review
