Latest Status auction #250 has 7 lots (nos. 3100-3106) of the reprints, most with Kapuls and in blocks.
This will test the market.

Doug ... a favour .. might you be able to update this superbly useful table, with the invoice price paid for those with your prices?

i.e. the hammer price you now have, PLUS the Buyers Commision? Makes a huge difference on a $700 hammer price!

(10) Buyers commission of 16.5% will be added to the knockdown price of each lot. All lots are sold on a GST inclusive basis (where applicable).

Does anybody have an idea about prices of 21 and 45 Toea BOP stamps with one Kapul - I have never seen these to be offered?

Until this week I had never heard of either being offered.

I will post a revised listing (as requested by Glen) of dealer pricing and auction results in about 2 weeks.

Meanwhile

Apologies for the quality of scan - this seems to be one area where the No. 1 auction house up the road from me falls short of the mark.

This one is going to cost some-one heaps, and the other double heaps.

This is (was) the third block of which I am aware.
Dealer asking price for each stamp is in AUD (all sold).

A client asked me to sell these for him for what I think is a most attractive price. Superb MUH, and as far as he can determine, the only known SE corner set of corner imprint/Kapul blocks of the 'July 1993' inscription.

Well it wasn't me, and all mine are that exact same corner block ( I just checked to make sure they hadn't been nicked).

Nice to see that there is at last some stock coming on to the market.

Glen, could you please advise an approx breakdown of the asking price. I will then update "my" catalogue and re-post it here.

Doug .. the client is severely cash strapped due to the current stock-market crisis, and was happy to go with my price suggestion, so as he could cash up fast to pay some calls.

As 4 single sets, they were rated on the grid above at $3,400 - plus the applicable premium for the marginal marking copies, making fair value about $4,000.

He suggested $2000 to offer them at would be every cheap, being about half the going rate. I said if he made it $A1,750 he'd get a far faster sale.

He agreed with me. :)

So a one-off aberration offer, but one man's financial crisis is always another man's gain. :D

Thanks

I won't use "fire sale" pricing in these volatile times.

Rather than continually posting updates, I am quite happy to email the Excel spreadsheet to anyone that is interested - it incorporates the latest Status auction results, but not the Prestige as I need to sit down and eliminate the "rubbish" to come up with an estimate for the Kapul items

I would be very interested to get an updated PNG BOP list.
Thanks in advance.

PNG BoP's

Post by E-Sherman »

Hi Folks, I tried the email function but could not get it to work. I would adore seeing the excel sheet that shows the various printings of the BoP definitives. I recently acquired my only missing stamp- the 45t May, 1992 mint. The stamps with kapuls seem pretty intimidating, pretty scarce in most printings and downright rare for others.

I found one in my collection, not a scarce one, but I just sold it to a dealer. Also have 2 spare copies of the 45t May, 1992 used if anyone is interested.

One area I'd like to explore is shades. I have noticed some obvious shade differences amongst the known printings. For example, in the 45t, which had 4 known printings (1992, May, 1992, 1993, and July, 1993) some of the colors are noticeable different between the prinitings.

What I find more interesting though is that I have stamps from presumable the same printing, e.g. examples dated "1992" that have marked shade differences. I realize that some printings may exist despite not having different date imprints, or that inking can vary within a printing, but it's an interesting artifact nonetheless.

If you have multiple stamps, take a closer look and you will see what I mean. Not sure these will become collectible in the same way that KGVI shades are collectible, but I wonder if anyone might try to catalogue the shades sometime.

All the best,
All the best,

Hi Ed
I am not aware of a July 1993 printing of the 45t.
Could you please post an image.
As to shades, I will post some details as to how these came about when I get home.

PNG BoP's 45t

Post by E-Sherman »

Doug:

My mistake, the 4 printings include the capital "T" printing but not July, 1993. I would love to hear your thoughts on why examples of the same denominations from presumably the same printings have color/shade variations.

Thanks!

As can be seen from my listing, the 21t second and third printings were dated May 1992, the fourth was dated 1993, but the fifth reverted to May 1992.

I queried this with a fellow Papuan Philatelic Society member some 18 months ago, and his thoughts were that the May 1992 plates were chosen because /they were available/couldn't find the 1993 plates/too busy to make some new (? July 1993) plates etc. etc.

So it could be expected that there would be colour differences with each printing.

I will go through my stock, but have already identified a "cream" paper which may affect the shades.

This should provide someone with the incentive to do some serious research on shades. The reds seem to be consistent except for the one Kapul which seems to be more intense.

The greens seem more variable, but in view of the red/green dichotomy problems facing us blokes, perhaps this research is best suited to our female members.

You stated what you paid for them. How much for a fast turnover?

No if you read it again, I posted what he was happy for me to advertise them for to sell .. which was $1,750 the 3 blocks. That I did on my rarity page, and they sold in a day to a collector in Texas .. no-one who is a member of this board by the way - he just buys unusual things off me!

It was a great deal for the Texan, as seller was strapped for cash due to the sharemarket mess, and wanted a fast sale - which he got. At way under usual retail.

Thanks Glen. I saw the date time marker after I posted the question, so I figured it was all history from there.

However, can you help with any of the May 1992 or July 1993 BOPs. If not yourself, maybe someone else.

Assuming the 2 Kapul pair are MUH, they're listed at $170 (for a single) by Tom Osborne. The used stamp, with May 1992 at base is listed at $180. Nice find if the stockbook was the right price!

Not bad Dave - how about yourself?

Looking back at all the posts on this thread, I feel the rarest of the Kapuls is the 21t one Kapul ( which is dougspeak for I don't have a right margin one).

The two Kapul reprint was advertised by the PNG Philatelic Bureau on the back of their publicity brochure (Nov 1992), but AFAIK no publicity for the first reprint.

Pleased you are the new owner of this great block and even a greater price.

I attach Osborne's PDF price list as it might be of interest to others as a guide.

I was offered the blocks below at a very senisible price, for a fast sale, which I have bought, and they will be sold at a most attractive price - a fraction of Osborne.

One client I thought needed them, but that no longer seems to be the case.

Seems to be a COMPLETE set of the 4 "July 1993" inscribed stamps and Kapuls - all in corner blocks.

In the actual list of Osborne the BOP 45t MAY1992 single stamp is listed at 1750A$.
I would like to know a price for a corner block of four with one Kapul, as I have never seen one for sale.

Yes, prices have come down.
Most PNG collectors interested in this field have already got those corner copies.
The only ones still to fetch very good prices are 21 and 45 Toea first reprints with ONE KAPUL.

Re: PNG 1992/3 Birds of Paradise. Date varieties of the 45t

Thanks for that update Wolfgang - although I imagine many purchasers of more recent times are not thanking you?

From time to time I have wondered what corner stamp/block is preferred by collectors (top/bottom/left/right), and whether one commands a premium c/f the others?

As you know with this series, the left and right hand corner stamps have different vertical selvedge (in this case W S Peckover or Leigh-Mardon) -
is there any data as to one being more rare than the other?
