Kāpiti Coast District Council: set a target to be carbon-neutral by 2025!
Why this petition matters
Climate change is existential threat and we all need to whatever we can to cut greenhouse emissions as fast as possible. It's natural to look to local government for leadership. Kāpiti Coast District Council has already cut its emissions by 75% in the last seven years - now we are calling on them to commit to going the rest of the way to net-zero emissions (carbon-neutral) by 2025. This will put Kāpiti out in front as a leader on climate change solutions once again.
The Council can do this by committing to using 100% renewable electricity and pushing fossil fuels out of its operations such as swimming pools and its vehicle fleet, using technologies like heat pumps, solar panels and electric vehicles and equipment. Council's remaining emissions can be offset by growing new native forests within the district, including on its own land.
These approaches will both cut emissions and bring a wide range of other benefits to our communities including reducing costs in the medium to long term.
So c'mon KCDC! Give us some hope and some leadership to help us face the climate crisis! Adopt a target to be net-zero emissions as an organisation by 2025, then go out and achieve it! It's 100% necessary, 100% possible and will make our district an even better place to live!
