Thanks for reading! I’d love to stay in touch with you. Visit my home page at www.mahubooks.com, where you can subscribe to one or more of my newsletters. I hope you'll also consider following me at Goodreads to see what I'm reading, and subscribe to my author page at Facebook where I post news and giveaways.

I've wanted to be an author since I was about sixteen, when a high school assignment on A Separate Peace showed me how powerful writing can be. At the University of Pennsylvania I studied creative writing with Philip Roth and Carlos Fuentes; I went on to receive my MFA from Florida International University.

My first published novel was Mahu, about a Honolulu homicide detective dragged out of the closet during a tough case. I put a lot of myself into Kimo Kanapa'aka, the hero, and yet he’s very much his own character, and much better than I am! He has had a powerful hold on my imagination for many years. I love writing about him and hope to keep doing so for a long time. He’s also the source of my favorite reader question. A few years ago, someone emailed to ask if he was circumcised.

My first reaction was “Man, I’ll bet Stephen King doesn’t get questions like that.” But then, his are probably even weirder. I went online and did some research and discovered that at the time Kimo was born, hospital circumcisions were common. So there you go.

My path to publication was a long and checkered one, as is the case with many authors. My first published stories were magazine erotica, and I still like to keep my hand in (no pun intended) with that kind of writing. But for the most part now I write mystery and romance—all my books seem to have both those elements, though in different proportions.

I began writing the golden retriever mysteries because I spent so much time walking my golden, Samwise (yes, I’m a Tolkien geek). He had so many funny habits and such a strong personality that I just knew I had to write a book that featured a dog like him. (Fortunately, Sam had no habit of finding dead bodies.)

I live in Hollywood, Florida now, with my partner and our golden retrievers, Brody and Griffin.

Each and every one of us who's loved a dog will fall inlove with this series of books. The author manages tocreate great and believable characters both good and 'not so much'. His characterization of the love between Rochester, the exhuberant and crime solving Golden and Steve his 'Daddy' is priceless. And ,like the previous book murder most foul again rears its head. The twists and turns inthis one will definitely keep youguessing; every time I thought ' ohyeah, that's the murderer', a new suspicious characters raises his/her ugly head. The background of the book, a College, is also very realistic with all the intrigues, jeaulousies, and its share of truly bombastic characters. All in all a joy to read, and reccommend this book to all mystery and dog lovers.

I am beginning book #4 now - I'll be out of circulation for the next week; what a treat to find such a great 12 book series! Some editorial problems (missing words and President Babson has a wife and 3 daughters in chapter 2 (Henny Denny Lenny Penny), then a few chapters down he "had no children of his own." Steve's behavior is sometimes irritatingly stupid, but… nobody's perfect. (I'm a dog person, of course; I wouldn't look at this series twice if a cat were involved!) Gotta go, Rochester doesn't like to be kept waiting!

The mystery was mysterious, the heroes heroic and the villains villainous. I just wish they had taken more care with the mechanics. Example, in the beginning the college president had four daughters, A couple of chapters later he had never had kids. Those kinds of errors make it difficult to trust the clues as they are given. I will be reading #3 though in hopes they have a new editor because I love the whole premise of the series!

While the mysteries are head scratchers, and Rochester makes me laugh out loud, it's the character that carry the day. For example, Lou Segusi, Juan Tanamera, Rosie Hippz, and my favorite, Ike Arumba. And that's only four! You'll have to read the book to catch the rest. Great dog and chuckles along the way. Well worth the read.

Steve gets a full-time job writing for the new campaign to raise money to upgrade campus facilities at Eastern. They're hoping to raise $500 million. This makes Steve hope it will lead to a permanent job at the college.
At the kick off fund raiser, one of the college big wigs, who just so happened to oppose the fundraiser, is found with his throat slit. Steve and Rochester become embroiled in the investigation. Then an adjunct professor is found dead over the winter break, and Steve is asked to take her place. This death was an accident.... wasn't it?
There's no shortage of suspects, but again, Rochester just happens to find things that are evidence. Add in, too, Steve's having his first date since his divorce, over two years ago.
The story is well written; the plot is good, believable and concise. I highly recommend this series to everyone!

I looked at this book three times before I finally bought it. I am so glad I did now. This is another great story about Rochester and his human, Steve. I enjoyed this second book as much as the first one. Rochester is such a smart dog, and he helps solve another killing or two.

Even though it has proofreading errors, I still have to give this book 5 stars just because it is about a dog, one who is very smart.

I can't wait until the next book comes out to see what Rochester and Steve do.
