The fabulous musicians and talented dancers
Joining our core Lancaster musicians Sian Philips (accordion and kaval), Paul Sherwood (clarinet, hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes), Jane Lawrence (fiddle and piano), Ben Farmer (accordions and ukulele), and Birmingham based Syrian virtuoso viola player Raghad Haddad, who played for us at 'Musical Journeys 1' in January, are:
* "Uncle Phil" Preston based world champion dancer Phil Kaila;
|
The evening started with Raghad on viola, taking us on a journey around Syria and neighbouring Arabic countries. Then there's a medley of English tunes with our Lancaster musicians - including some clog dancing!, followed by an Irish set from Bev. Next is a set of Klezmer tunes, the music from the Ashkenazi Jewish community of Eastern Europe. Then, Zena will take us on a singing tour of the Caribbean - with a range of gospel, Reggae, Calypso and call-and-response songs. And finally there'll be a Caribbean dance party for everyone, on Facebook Live, led by 'Uncle Phil'.
During the evening our dancers will be visible on the screen alongside the musicians, encouraging you to get up and dance! In order to help you to do this, we're putting on a set of dance workshops in the afternoon from 1.30 to 5.30 p.m., where you can learn a couple of Irish set dances with Bev, an English traditional Lancashire clog waltz with Georgia, two or three Klezmer dances with Fiona, Caribbean dancing through the 'Follow my leader', the 'Jerusalema' and the 'Cupid Shuffle' with Uncle Phil, and finally some Syrian traditional Dabke dance steps with Medhat and Mouafat, who will also be teaching some ways of moving your body to Arabic music even if you don't want to get out of your chair! (See workshop timings below)
We're very happy to be able to put on an event which allows us to pay proper fees to performers as well as raise money for local Lancaster organisations. After paying our musicians and dancers, proceeds from ticket sales will be shared between Global LInk's vision for a new centre for refugees and asylum seekers in Lancaster, and A-C-E, which supports young people in the Lancaster and Morecambe area who are struggling with mental health challenges. You can also add a donation to one or both of the charities, after you've bought your tickets.
