MASSIVE eBay Stamp Fraud Ring - and as always now, eBay doesn't care
This eBayer was brought my attention by a forum member who asked me to have a look at his sales record.
It appears that maddiston2012 may be trying the same trick as scammer and crook lawersdrive (see http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=43490 and his now seven negatives)
So let's tick some boxes:
Joined in November 2012.
Offered around 30 items starting at 99p sold and got positive feedback on many of them.
Started listing big ticket items on February 21, stopped Listing on March 2.
Still no feedback for expensive items sold on February 23
All private listings
All 3 day auctions.
Nothing conclusive here but worth keeping a watch on any further activities. And he certainly has been patient, waiting 3 months, if indeed it is less than kosher, which is quite unusual..

http://www.ebay.com/csc/maddiston2012/m.html?_ipg=&_from=&_nkw=&_armrs=1&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc
I'll get some pictures up now.

I'd agree, those China covers look like the sort of thing a good auction house would offer. Probably the eBayer is pinching photos from the online catalogue and posting them for sale, and the Bunnies bite.

Trying to extract the maximum money from as many people as quickly as possibly, is my conclusion. I can't think of a legitimate reason to send multiple second chances - it isn't as though you are going to have 5 of these lying around.

Both Lawersdrive and Maddiston2012 appear to be located in Scotland --- My guess is not a kilometer apart!
This is fraud on a serious scale . 4 of Lawersdrive's bunnies got money back from paypal , 4 others have not indicated on their feedbacks other than outrage.
Second chances on such covers surely are astonishing brass neck !
And serious stupidity on the part of the bunny who takes up the offer.

What I find surprising is that eBay haven't kicked lawersdrive into touch after 8 negs but even if they did he probably has another 8 accounts such as this one lined up ready to carry on.

A google search for maddiston2012 brings this thread up as No. six on the hit list. Too bad that it is too late to save the bunny bidders. Their money gone bye byes.
I realise that there is no such thing as due diligence when it comes to eBay, but damn! It is frustrating to see crooks such as maddiston2012 and Lawersdrive steal money because eBay does not care, and will not listen when real collectors point out obvious fraud.
Since I do not look at other categories, is stamp fraud any more prevalent than other eBay category frauds? I imagine that any collectable area would be open to similar scams.

Ebay do not give a stuff about fakes being sold on there, and the have created an environment where every crook on earth lives in there,, as they do not care.

After paying out $1000s for "not received" scams by Lawersdrive you'd think SOMEONE in ebay would see a flag to new accounts these cons set up.

Right now if I write to ebay to tell them lot 261178483126 'sold' for $3200 and they'll be paying it - and many others out themselves via PayPal claim unless they cancel all sales they can act.
If he is NARU, the lot number is not recorded here then, had i not added it, as well as on ebay.

Re: eBayer maddiston2012 is "selling" things he/she does not
I wonder if these "announcements" or "bragging" are automated or actually have a human selecting and uploading them.Global Administrator wrote:I added the $3,200 link as I will add this thread to my next Stamp news Column being typed now.
ebay bragging about how well Con-Men do on their site, sets a totally new level for them to exceed in stupidity.
So many alerts and displays and features on eBay pages are automated...pay for an item, and it displays a batch of other items titled "if you bought that, you might like these", or "people who looked at that also looked at this"...most of the time what the system thinks is a match is not, or simply hits on similar keywords--country name, "cover", "unmounted", a thematic.
So eBay bot picks up that item X (the $3200 scam cover) sold for a high bid, after starting at 99 cents or whatever, and had umpteen bids and watchers, so the machine assumes the item is "hot" and was a "find" for the seller. Well, the item is "hot", but in a "fell off the back of the truck" kind of way.
I save a lot of ongoing items in my watch list, to see what the final prices are on them. Its sales like these that make me suspicious of 3-figure/4-figure sales...there are a few sellers out there who are legit, but when I see a say $600 China cover sale, and the seller has a username like "Peru stamp king" (not a real user AFAIK), and the following week its back to material fitting their character, I wonder "where did that China item come from?!"

Re: eBayer maddiston2012 is "selling" things he/she does not
This is turning into an epidemic.
There are at least ELEVEN ebay IDs that have used the same strategy of listing 99p items (usually covers) to build up feedback and then suddenly listing a few much more expensive items over short period.
They are also sending multiple "second chance" offers to the underbidders to try and maximise their takings.
Rather than give them a thread each, I have listed them all here. Since lawersdrive and maddiston2012 have been proven to be crooked, I have no doubt that these are too. In fact, I would put money on the same person being behind the entire scam.

I am still in the process of properly documenting this but it is going to take some time (a few days) and it would not surprise me if some more IDs come to light.
Once complete, I will post the information - just thought I would mention it so no one else need start posting images of the items etc...

Chris,
Following information from another stampboarder I ran a check on Friday on wellthorme and yes very quickly established that 3 of the pictures came from the same place as lawersdrive and maddiston2012. He was reported.

Well done, Chris. I have had a look at a few of the seller ID's that you cited, and they certainly all fit the same pattern. Looking forward to seeing the results of your hard work, as, I suspect, are all members here.

Does anyone know if the Ebay "Stamp Community Watch" group still exists?
Here are some details from a decade ago.

Re: eBayer maddiston2012 is "selling" things he/she does not
It is a bit of a worry when scrolling through the new posts I read these three consecutive entries:
1."Ebay scammer as a buyer - russianstamps"!
2. "Does this ebay seller lawersdrive look a bit suspect?!
3. "David Allen (Georgie) Gee aka Chinese Ma - stamp fakes etc."!
I see above where Chris identifies a monthly batch of Ebay scammers! Ebay will "close the gate" on these "Robert Souls" but only after the horse has bolted! Of course they will have done a "Phoenix" & risen again before this happens.
These scammers have always been around (eg George Gee - I am still laughing about someone asking for his autograph & I still remember his Bridge fdc that was on the front of a SG catalogue about 10 years ago), ebay just gives them an easier platform to work from.
Some time back I put in place some rules from which to buy from ebay (which I think in light of the above I will have to revise). These rules are not just aimed at these scammers but all other types:
1. When looking at high priced items make sure seller has 3 digit feedback.
2. Examine closely negative & neutral feedback
3. Stick to strict bidding limits & do not get involved in a bidding war (use a snipe program & set & forget).
No doubt others will have their own sets of rules.
However at the present time ebay can only be re-active against scammers & cannot be pro-active. Until such time that ebay can, then we all must conduct our own due diligence & be thankful that there are some very astute stampboarders out there who can help us identify these con-artists!

But it does demonstrate that the scammers have been there, and been known about, since before the existence of Stampboards. Also that eBay have been aware of them for at least ten years and have done nothing ... except threaten those people who have been trying to stop the scammers.
In fact, the way that I read the eBay responses is that it's OK for scammers to ply their wares so long as they dont break eBay rules.
You can list a photocopy of a stamp, don't have a description but just say "Nice item, sold as is", and eBay will have no problem with that.

Remember ebay does not CARE if stamp collectors get ripped off.
They make handsome ebay and paypal fees each time you are sold fakes.
They knowingly allow the fakesters to have a bevy of bogus fake Shill bidder accounts to crank up your bids, and do nothing about it when advised.
Bidders are on their own.
And if the faker mails you an empty envelope by Registered mail, you will LOSE in any PayPal claim.
Dave Elsmore "de66" would have been £1000+ out of pocket had his conman done that.
Buying $15,000 of Kangaroos stamps for the Ebay Bargain Hunting Bunny price of - "£900 Buy It Now" is as savvy a buy as buying a "Genuine Rolex" from a pub on Friday night for $50.
If it were not for stampboards member's eagle eyes, 100s more would get conned.

Norm,
If I recall correctly, archersfield was already private when the list was published. But these IDs have all gone private in the last day or so.

Re: eBayer maddiston2012 is "selling" things he/she does not
Doing a google search on maddiston2012 has Stampboard links at No.2, No, 3 and has a recent article written by Glen at No. 5. It is, I suppose a minor victory but this crook has gotten away with $'0000's. eBay's so called reporting system is a failure and a joke. The crook wins, buyers become disillusioned and Paypal increases fees to cover losses which would never occur if eBay would only listen to what people are saying.
But I also need to say that the Bunny Buyers still keep lining u[ to get robbed. If these people were just as bit more astute, and not graduates from a Moron Farm, these events would not become possible.

Re: eBayer maddiston2012 is "selling" things he/she does not
Had a thought....doesn't happen often but here goes.
With Stampboards now having its 10,000th member join it is a major force in the philatelic community.
Would it be worth a Stampboard online petition urging ebay to review their policy.
If enough members "sign" this then they at the very least would have to take note of what is being said.
We are talking here about something that will benefit the whole of the stamping world...to remove serial scammers. I am not naive enough to believe that things will ever be perfect but there are safeguards that can be put in place.
What do you think??
regards
Mick
Mods....if you feel this should have its own thread rather than this one please feel free to move it.

Re: eBayer maddiston2012 is "selling" things he/she does not
My understanding is (and I would be happy to be shown to be wrong) that the Stamps part of eBay is a bit like a pimple on a pumpkin, and makes very little, if any money. I really think that they do not care, and as has been shown on other threads, about 85 - 90% of stamps are now BIN and many of these are from on-line shops.
It wants to change from a third party Auction House to a third party retailer, and has been heading in that direction for years.
As far as stamps go, I doubt that eBay even cares. But your idea is worth a try. Doing something is often better than doing nothing.

Looking at the homepage of eBay, its usually smartphones, Blackberries, clothes, sports equipment featured as "shop now for bargains!".
eBay brought out their page years ago for selling used cars, and you can even buy real estate there I think.
The categories they probably care about are the mass-market ones--electronics, concert/sports tickets. Hate to think how rife the luxury-label clothing/handbag categories are with fakes.
