An A to Z of Scott Weinberg's horror movie reviews (over 800!), from 2000 to 2015.

"Scott Weinberg has had a profound impact on the psyche of my career more than any other film critics out there." – James Wan, director Saw and The Conjuring

"A supremely knowledgable and sharply incisive reviewer, Weinberg knows and loves horror cinema as much as anyone I know." – Scott Derrickson, director of Sinister

"Brutally honest, calls it likes it is. Agree or disagree with his reviews, he is a fan of cinema and knows the art." – Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw II-IV

"At its best, film criticism serves as an intimate, passionate dissection of cinematic form and content at the hands of a doctor you trust. I've always felt comfortable with Dr. Weinberg's operating table, whether I was laying on it or merely observing from the operating theater." – Lucky McKee, director of The Woman

850 reviews in handy alphabetical format, with a new Preface by Scott and an Introduction by James Wan, director of Saw and The Conjuring.

This is a cracking book of film reviews which I would recommend to all horror fans. All the main horror films you would expect be there are : plus a good selection of lesser known ones. Only disappointment is I haven't come across an updated version going up to 2020.

It took a long time to wind my way through it. It took me perhaps close to two months to read it (amongst other reading). He’s probably too kind about the merits of these films so his recommendations had little weight to them but it was entertaining to read these reviews for their own sake.

I ended up watching two good films called Splice (2009) and You’re Next (2011) based on his reviews. I also tried a few other movies (their titles elude me) but they were terrible.

Fantastic read with all the reviews speaking my language, I now consider Scott Weinberg a god of Horror.

If you aren't a fan of review-compilation books ( where a critic's numerous reviews get compiled into a nice big time), then this isn't for you. However, if you like the episodic, short-bursts style of these kind of book, which I do, the this is an especially good compilation.

The noteworthy aspect of this book is that it features movies that have been made within the last decade, and sometimes, actually within the last year, and that is an appealing novelty, as usually, review books like this deal with the same "classics" you have read about, time and time again. It is refreshing to read a book where the movies it is talking about are all very recent.

What I really like about this book is the fact, that even as a die-hard Horror movie fan, there were plenty of movies in it that I hadn't seen and that, after reading the reviews, I want to hunt down and watch. That is something I am not used to doing, and I am sure that the author would be very happy if he thought he had got some movies that deserve some attention in font of more people.

The author is an unabashed fan of the genre and knows he is talking to like minded people, and that also makes this book work for me. He doesn't talk down to the readers or the filmmakers and he know what we want to hear from a review of these kinds of. Movies.

If you are the sort of hardcore horror movie geek, like me, who loves these kinds of books, then I can't recommend this one enough.

As a librarian, I’m naturally a bit obsessed with reference books, and in particular, horror reference books. When I was too young to see horror movies, I could still read books about them, and based on the plot description I would let my imagination do the work. For a good number of movies, I’m sure the dread-filled images in my head were better than the actual movies turned out to be.

So with that in mind, I’m always on the lookout for new books about horror movies. And who doesn’t love a good list book? My personal preference for horror is anything from the eighties, so I’m branching out to see what I can discover with Modern Horrors: An A-Z of Horror Movie Reviews 2000-2015 by Scott Weinberg. For those not familiar, Scott Weinberg is a well established film critic writing for numerous websites. This book is an A-Z list of over 800 horror movies that were released in 2000 or later. First of all, that’s a lot of films covered. It’s a mix of independents, big budget offerings, and U.S. and international releases. The reviews are at least one page long, so you’re getting more than a peripheral examination of each title, with some of the more interesting films earning longer discussions.

The author has very strong opinions. He’s a critic; that’s his job. There are always going to be reviews that I don’t agree with. How much you enjoy a movie is a matter of taste and everyone is entitled to an opinion, so I don’t get up in arms if a movie that is horribly reviewed is one that I love. Weinberg is passionate and entertaining throughout and there is a good bit of humor, especially when covering the movies he clearly thinks are terrible. I feel the pain he must have gone through when watching terrible movies like I Know Who Killed Me and The Scorned. The reviews are never dry. For example, the opening to his Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2:

If “earth-shatteringly dull” is a term you like your horror movies described as, Blair Witch 2 is for you.

I don’t want to give the impression that the book is full of negativity, as that is not the case. The movies he likes, he likes (even if horror snobs would consider them unfashionable). I really enjoyed the focus of the book. There are lots of gems from the past 15 years that I now know I need to catch up on. It’s also a look at where horror has been and where it’s going, with nods to the reassuringly excellent films that have come out over the last 15 years, such as 28 Days Later, Dead Snow, It Follows, and The Babadook to name a few. Thankfully with these recent-ish movies, there’s a good chance you’ll find them on a streaming service. If I had one criticism – well, suggestion for improvement really – it would be to add some images or posters. The book is entirely text. What you’re getting with this book is a thorough guide that’s a joy to flip through and a useful companion when browsing Netflix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Horrors - A book for lovers of Horror (and great writing)!
Reviewed in Canada on 28 December 2015
Before I started writing for a horror website earlier this year, I always read film reviews online; mostly horror through the usual suspects (Dread Central, Fangoria, etc). One name that always popped up through Rotten Tomatoes was Scott Weinberg; great reviews of horror films told with succinct, humorous honesty. I always strive to achieve what Scott (seemingly) does effortlessly - to get to the meat of the tale in as many interesting ways as possible. Horror films are usually scoffed at - marginalized and looked down upon. Scott is one of many champions of the genre; however he carries the message with a clearness and levity that most cannot achieve. I have read some of these reviews before (but not many), and eagerly await the chance to catch up, and learn from hopefully, one of the genre's very best critics. Cheers, good sir - thanks for the book, and the inspiration.

Finding a critic whose tastes hew close to your own is indispensable; finding one whose writing style is entertaining takes the relationship between curious reader and critical eye to an even higher level.

That Scott Weinberg is a fan of horror movies is well-known, but that love doesn't lead to mere ballyhoo of every feature to come his way - if he doesn't like a movie, he will say so, and more importantly, he has the writing chops to tell you why. Each of his reviews is meant to stand alone, and each is a pretty good read in its own right.

The proliferation of horror movies across the many forms of digital media, not just movie screens, can leave a viewer bewildered by choice, and many movies sink without a trace into obscurity; thanks to Weinberg's championing, I have seen and enjoyed many movies I would have passed over, or ignored unjustly. This collection of reviews is much-needed and - I'll say it again - indispensable.

Scott Weinberg is one of my favorite film critics especially when it comes to horror. The preface and the introduction are very humbling to read, Scott really has a respect for the indie horror film, he writes very uniquely and is never mean spirited. I find laughs in every review I read. This is a really fun book to read, especially before or after you watch one of the many film he reviews.
