Movie News Archive!

Welcome to the 5th edition of
The New Mexico Movie News by crewnewmexico.com!

Every time I sit down to write these intro letters, I feel like an airline CEO penning an editorial for their in-flight magazine. They gently touch on this and that, thank a hero, then wrap with something that always comes down to: flying is good, thank you for flying, fly again soon.

Similarly, no matter what I plan to write about for The Movie News, I always come around to the same core message: film is good for New Mexico, thank you for filming, and come film again soon.

I recently attended the AFCI Locations Tradeshow in Santa Monica and found a lot of other places (200 of them) working to integrate film into their creative and economic landscape, including by throwing around incentives so lucrative they border on irrational.

Others were so generous as to be simply unsustainable, while others too modest to make any real difference. And then there was the top team from New Mexico, representing the most sustainable, trusted, and reputed film destination and set of incentives in the country. Even for those who could match our numbers, our diversity of locations, skilled crew base, weather, experienced vendors, and proximity to LA, keeps us one of the top places to film. Telling people you're from New Mexico has a mythical air in the film world. It says a lot.

In this edition of The Movie News, you'll notice we've changed our tag line to "The New Mexico Film Connection." It  better describes what we do and, especially in light of our upcoming 1,001 New Mexico Film Connections event (booked solid, sorry. Only those who RSVPd will be able to attend), sponsored by Garson Studios, and several other events we're planning that will bring the film community together, I think we'll wear the new moniker well.

We've also introduced the new "Spotlight" series, providing detailed profiles and ads of some of New Mexico's leading film vendors. Our goal has always been to highlight the incredible diversity of talent and services available to productions, and this is one more step towards that goal.

In just the last 18 months, we've added nearly 700 individuals and businesses to our directory, and the readership rate of The Movie News has exceeded our highest expectations. Our member/advertisers comprise an incredibly diverse roster of people and businesses in New Mexico, from every corner of the State, and with every kind of skill and business type you can imagine.

All of them have chosen to become part of the diverse film economy, to contribute to the well-being of a profitable industry, and work hard to make filming in New Mexico a resounding success. So, on behalf of those 700, it is my pleasure to say: film is good, thanks for filming, and come film with us again soon.

Best wishes,

garson logo
Greer Garson, film legend and Oscar winner, funded Garson Studios in 1989 to answer the growing demand for state-of-the-art sound stages in New Mexico.

Housed in a 27,000-square-foot facility on the College of Santa Fe campus, these two spacious, comfortable sound stages are air-conditioned and offer drive-on access for trucks of any size. The property also has five 50-amp RV hook-ups.

A 3,000-square-foot office space is attached to the sound stages, and another 7,500-square-foot office space is located across the street. The larger stage features a 4,200-square-foot green screen cyclorama. Both stages are secured by electric roll-up doors and include several lock-up spaces. The grid system in both stages has been recently upgraded to respond to evolving production needs. Plenty of secure fenced parking and back-lot space is also available.

In addition, well-trained student interns from CSF's Moving Image Arts Department are available to work with film makers on any project.

Films shot at Garson Studios include Knockout, True Grit, Iron Man 2, The Sunset Limited, Paul, The Loop, My One and Only, Legion, Brothers, Appaloosa, and No Country for Old Men.

For more information or to arrange a site visit, contact Paula Amanda, Director of Garson Studios at (505) 231-9411 or pamanda2@aol.com.

news iconIndustry News Updates

As of this writing, the pending auction of Albuquerque Studios is off the table. The Studios had defaulted on a $21.4 million dollar loan payment, and one of its creditors, Workers Realty Trust II LP of Chicago, threatened to sell the Studios to the highest bidder on May 14th, on the Bernalillo County Courthouse steps. (How old fashioned). The Studios would likely have been under new management in just a few weeks. Pacifica Ventures, however, parent company of the Studios, is now working to restructure the loans, and current studio chief Hal Katersky remains at the helm. Good news for now, but the Studios are currently in arrears on their property taxes, to the tune of over $300k. Stay tuned. . .  Meantime, three former Albuquerque Studio managers have been named in a lawsuit by Pacifica Ventures, accusing them of funneling film business away from New Mexico -- to new studios they're helping develop in other states! Just weeks after Studio head Nick Smerigan abruptly leaves the helm at ABQ Studios, his new company reportedly starts building studios in Mississippi and Connecticut. Really? Read this classic press release by Gail Smerigan that talks about how successful they were in building and operating ABQ Studios. Perhaps they left out a few details? Stay tuned . . .  Meantime, up in the North, a Lawsuit is filed against the development of Santa Fe Studios. Three Santa Fe businessmen contend that the $6 million loan by Santa Fe County to the Studios doesn't qualify for public funds. Santa Fe county disagrees, and aims to have the suit thrown out of court. At this point, no ground has been broken on the Studios, though the project is still supposed to be moving ahead and construction to start soon . . . But don't be dismayed New Mexico filmmakers! Garson Studios in Santa Fe has been around since 1989, and continues to be an integral part of the New Mexico film industry, hosting such productions as Iron Man 2, No Country For Old Men, Legion, Brothers, Appaloosa, and many more. The College of Santa Fe (where Garson is located) is under stable new ownership, and the Studio is planning for a long and fruitful future in New Mexico. They're in full swing, and busy . . . The AFCI Locations Tradeshow in Santa Monica highlights just how competitive location filming has become. Hundreds of film commissions from 30 nations descend upon LA to show their wares, promote their locations, and, most importantly, promote their incentive programs. Special presentation by Michigan Film Office receives the most attendees by a multiple of two (thanks to their 42% tax credit), though many in attendance were very green to producing. New Mexico booth wins "most informative" and was "paperless" using giant touch-screen monitors to highlight our locations. Hats off to Don Grey of the NM Film Office for that technical wonder and a job well done! Also in attendance was new Lincoln County film commissioner Debbie Jo Almager. The folks in Lincoln county are getting very organized behind drawing film to their region, and we look forward to it! . . . Alaska shows off their (up to) 44% rebate (and gave away Alaska dark roast coffee), Georgia their 30%, and Louisiana offers long term visibility by locking in their 30%+incentive for the next several years, while Jefferson Parish, just north of New Orleans, ups the ante with their own 3% rebate on top of that already offered by the State of Louisiana! Aggressive and concerted action that's already brought productions to their Parish. Meantime, nations from Uruguay to Slovenia have strong incentive packages on the books or in the works. It's a whole new film world out there . . . The 2nd Annual Albuquerque Film Festival is back for another amazing year. Save the weekend of August 25-29 for an immersion into the world of New Mexico Film . . . Be sure to check out the "Lights, Camera, Music!" fundraising event held at the Albuquerque Little Theater, and hosted by the Film Apprenticeship Program of New Mexico!. Tickets only $10. Event will be emceed by former Miss New Mexico Christina Olmi.  Native New Mexican and Country Music Sensation, Bo Brown will perform live. Also headlining will be local Comedian/Actor, Steven Michael Quezada, who also has a recurring role on AMC's hit and locally produced television show, Breaking Bad.  Proceeds benefit the Albuquerque Little Theater, now in its 80th Season! A don't miss event, for a great cause. . . Rio Rancho, New Mexico based cloud computing company Cerelink assisted DreamWorks SKG with rendering for the 3D box office hit How To Train Your Dragon. Cerelink is included in an ultra-fast private broadband network, National LambdaRail, which helps provide the infrastructure needed for advanced forms of digital media. In fact, the "tag" line for the New Mexico film booth at the AFCI Tradeshow was "Where Creativity Meets Technology" - and this shows exactly why. Got breaking industry news? marian hall outside

Marian Hall
Base Camp, Location, and Production Office
Right in the Heart of Santa Fe

The Marian Hall building, also known as the "Old Hospital," is one of the New Mexico film industry's busiest hubs, providing dozens of productions with an amazingly affordable "one stop shop," just blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza.

BASE CAMP

With a 300 vehicle parking lot and plenty of space for productions of all sizes, their parking area has been used as a base camp for dozens of productions, including, most recently, Brothers, Crazy Heart and Due Date. And when they're using Production Offices or a Location inside the building, it couldn't be more convenient. Shooting fee includes parking. Optional gated parking available. Need a little break? Just walk two blocks and you'll be in historic downtown Santa Fe!

LOCATION
marian hospital

With over 100,000 square feet covering two buildings (contemporary and historic), and flexible management who understands the intensive needs of the film industry, the building has been used as a film location by Crazy Heart, Thor, Beer For My Horses, The Keeper, Bordertown and Run For Her Life/Inhale.
The building also adjoins the beautiful Cathedral Park (half of which is under the same ownership as Marian Hall), which has a Spanish colonial design, sculptures and large lawns.

PRODUCTION OFFICE marian hall office

Marian Hall offers one of the most flexible office space solutions in New Mexico, with spaces from 500 to 35,000 sq. ft available. Building is wired for DSL, T-1 and Wi-Fi, has phone cabling throughout, and the electricity has recently been upgraded to handle industrial strength editing equipment and IT infrastructure required by a recent major production.

There's also ample space for wardrobe, gold room, storage, casting, as well as a free-standing building and adjoining outdoor space for mill and construction.
Recent Production Office credits include: O'Keefe, Appaloosa, Did You Hear About the Morgans, The Keeper, Thor, True Grit, and Passion Play.

Insurance options for multiple projects
and the entertainment industry

In the last two issues of Movie News, we've explored the coverage and considerations for single productions. In this installment we'll take a look at insurance for production companies that make many productions as well as policies for industry related businesses. Read through the following list and descriptions to see how insurance would fit you!

Multiple Projects: DICE/Annual Productions

My favorite acronym in movie insurance is DICE which stands for Documentary, Industrial, Commercial(s) and Educational productions, which are typically made by production companies who need an annual policy because they have multiple productions throughout each year. Though the DICE acronym sounds as if it might be restrictive to the type of productions allowed, the underwriters are increasingly opening up this type of policy to almost all production types. DICE/Annual policies combine the best of both insurance worlds - they cover most of the specialized film-specific "producer's risk" coverage that was discussed in detail last time with the broader scope of a general business owner's commercial insurance. As you'll recall, "producer's risk" can cover shooting and other miscellaneous equipment, property owned by third parties, wardrobe/props/sets, negative/faulty stock and broad automobile coverage. Stunts and cast coverage can now be "bought back" onto these policies, a very recent addition to the offering. A DICE/Annual policy is rated on the average number of productions throughout a year in combination with factoring in of the budget of the largest average production.

We had discussed short term (less than 30 or 60 days) v. long term single productions, and you'll recall that it is possible to get very affordable coverage for short term production policies of ten days of principal photography for $500. Typically a DICE/Annual policy is going to start around $1,300+ per year, so for a company that only makes two or three productions of ten or fewer days each, it may be just as easy to purchase a number of short term production policies. A DICE/Annual policy covers you for an entire 365 days of the year and takes into account office and incidental operations, so can be advantageous both financially and logistically. Note that in order to cover productions on a DICE/Annual policy, they must always be declared in advance to your agent.

Multiple Projects: Film Schools

You likely recall the scare tactics from the first article in this series in November warning against the dangers of sub-sold, paper based "co-production" arrangements from film schools. While the laws against co-production are still in place, they focus primarily on small producers that may be unwittingly taking advantage of a system. However, with the right insurance agent and policy, it is possible to get good coverage for film schools. There are policies specifically crafted to insure productions that are sanctioned by a film school at a U.S. university and for productions by students enrolled at the school. There are over 50 types of productions eligible for this coverage, but anything outside of the U.S. & Canada or with stunts must be insured as a sole and separate single production.

Multiple Projects: Production Portfolio

This recently added insurance option bridges the gap between DICE/Annual policy that is most appropriate and affordable for groups of smaller budget productions and full-fledged larger budget single productions. helpful tips

1. Fill out your profile page! If your page is blank, or doesn't have much information, not only can we not make active referrals, but people won't have enough information to make a purchasing or hiring decision. Keep your page full, and current!

2. Use it or lose it! (Not really) - Your page comes with its own web address (URL), such as crewnewmexico.com/johngrace, which means anyone can see your page with just one click! Add your URL to your email signature, business cards, Facebook, NM Film listing, etc. Deep-six that IMDB link, and use this one instead.

3. Do you have an additional website besides your listing on crewnewmexico.com? Link your site to ours and we'll both perform better in search results!
