Saving Sweet Mr. Sherbert

Mr. Sherbert was rescued from a Clifton neighborhood last night after he was found lying in a backyard, weak and emaciated, crying for help with the last of his strength. It was immediately obvious that this incredibly sweet, neutered boy is desperately ill.  We have never, in all our years of rescue work, witnessed a cat so neglected and thin.

Mr. Sherbert was clearly once a house cat, and we don't know how long he wandered the streets before he found us. He was covered with fleas, the most terrible infestation imaginable, and obviously dehydrated and anemic. He weighs only 4.2 pounds, and is desperate for rest, comfort, and affection. After emergency care (and a desperately needed "bath and blow dry"), we fed him and settled him in a warm, safe bed for the night.

Today, Mr. Sherbert saw our veterinarian, Dr. Scriffignano, who performed his initial exam and ran some diagnostic tests. So far, he's had x-rays, an initial ultrasound, and extensive bloodwork. He also received treatment for a case of constipation that can't be helping with his appetite or comfort level. While we are hoping that his anemia is caused by fleas, we still know that there is more to his medical story, and we are determined to find it. We have ruled out feline leukemia, lung cancer, and FIV, and are now looking at lymphoma or inflammatory bowel disease as possible culprits.

Over the next few weeks, Mr. Sherbert will need supportive care as well as thorough medical testing. We are committed to providing him the best possible medical care and nutrition, and hope that you will help with a donation toward his care. Should his condition prove treatable, we will give him everything he needs to recover. If his condition is not treatable, our Hospice Program will provide him with palliative care, comfort, and love for however long he needs it.

We will continue to provide updates as we know more about Mr. Sherbert's condition. For now, please share, and donate if you can!
