Introduction

butterfly-kit.jpg

Our Butterfly Garden with hatching caterpillars is coming soon!

What is going to happen?

Let’s get ready, so we will know what to expect, and learn how to take really good care of our butterflies!

Task

You will learn about Life Cycles, by watching some videos and reading some books in our class library.

Then you will choose one of the following: Butterfly, Frog or Hen,

to make a project presentation using Microsoft Powerpoint or OpenOffice Impress, and share what you know with the class.

Finally, you will design a board game, using the life-cycle you have learned about.

Process

  1. To begin, click to open and print out this watching worksheet, and read over the questions before you watch the videos.

  1. Watch these videos:          Butterfly1 or Butterfly2 (may need to wait for the ad to end first)  and Frog

  1. Fill in the answers on your worksheet.

_________________________________________

  1. Have a look at these websites which will tell you more about the animals and their lifecycles:

Download, print out and fill in these boxes to help you remember:

Choose 1 animal and look at the websites for that animal.

Butterfly1  Butterfly2

Frog1   Frog2  Frog3  Frog4

Hen1  Hen2 Hen3

You should also read these books, which are in the library:

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar”caterpillar.jpg

“Eggs and Chicks”chick 2.jpg

“See How They Grow, Chick”chick.jpg

“See How They Grow, Frog”frog.jpg

  1. Now we will make a Powerpoint or Impress presentation.

Download and print the instruction sheet (for Impress) to help you, or follow this tutorial website to learn about Powerpoint.

You can use words (typed) and pictures, and if you

can put in sounds as well, that would make it even

better. See “Evaluation” to see what makes the

best presentation.

Make sure your presentation is about one animal,

and that it tells the story of that animal’s life

cycle.

Make sure to include some interesting facts you

have learned from the videos and websites.

  1. Check your presentation for spelling and punctuation, then save it.

  1. Present it to the class! See “Evaluation” for what makes a really good class talk.

_________________________________________

  1. Design your board game: Design a board game, (maybe 25-50 steps long) using the life-cycle, so the game starts with the baby and ends with the fully grown, things that are good for the animal help the player move forward, dangers move you back or “Miss a turn”.

Conclusion

Well Done!

Now that we know all about:

The life cycles of the butterfly, frog and hen;

What is important to help them grow;

Some of the dangers they face...

we are ready to watch our own little caterpillars develop into butterflies.

Let’s take some pictures as they grow, and make sure they get all the help they need, the proper food, and a safe place for them to go when they are ready to fly away!
