- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have never been disappointed by Evelyn David. And this time, just as always I am laughing and enjoying another Mac Sullivan book. She is actually two very talented women. And when these women get together and write a book - it is a wonderful event for anyone who is a reader.
Mac Sullivan - former policeman -private detective - owner of a wonderful Irish Wolfhound named Whiskey - and possible boyfriend/significant other/future lover for Rachel Brenner. Rachel works at a funeral home owned by Mac's best friend. Which makes her now a part of an extended family of caring people.
Mac has two staff members - JJ who is his punk rocker secretary. She is a technical savant who keeps Mac in the loop when it comes to the world of technology. Edgar a senior citizen who is smart as a whip with a marvelous memory and his own scooter. Both of these people have the desire to be very involved in detecting. Both bring talents to the business. The only problem with both of them - their eagerness can put them in situations which may be dangerous.
This time there is a case for the agency which involves a missing wife, a missing employee at a turkey farm, and a missing load of turkeys. A man calls in to request help and Edgar and JJ are assigned some background inquiries. From there this mystery becomes much more intense. Something which sounds like an easy job becomes a death.
Rachel is concerned about missing caskets at the funeral home. No one seems to know how some high end big boxes could go missing with nobody noticing.
Mac Sullivan books are always written with skill. The plot is very well developed. The reader gets clues along the way, and just when you think you have a handle on things, some new event comes along.
I like the characters. From Mac on down to Whiskey, each one is a well rounded entity who adds to the story. Each of these people remind me of people I know or I would like to know.
And the best thing about this book, and all the Sullivan Investigation books - the humor. As you are reading along, you laugh out loud. So, if you plan to read in public, be prepared for the inquiring looks.
This story includes wedding plans, Thanksgiving dinner plans, and of course the ever popular unplanned murders. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
Mac Sullivan is a nice guy until you threaten his loved ones. Rachel is a quiet woman until you put her in a tight place. JJ and Edgar are two people who snipe at one another but will always support one another. And Whiskey is a dog who is a marvelous judge of character and an eating machine.
Get the book and enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMurder Takes the Cake may disprove my theory that the protagonist in a cozy is always female. Meet Mac Sullivan, retired cop opening his own PI office with a strange crew--assistant/secretary/jack-of-all-trades JJ and elderly Edgar who's on oxygen and uses a motorized cart. The prologue presents a fairly graphic and gruesome death scene, so the reader is surprised by the rest of the book which reads to me like a cozy. Bridget, Mac's goddaughter, is getting married but someone's trying to kill her. Her fiance says she's delusional, and his wealthy family seems to have some shady connection. Dead people and dead rats keep showing up--someone's using a lot of warfarin. And then there's the the funeral home setting of much of the novel which alternately adds humor and spookiness. While Mac is trying to follow leads and protect Bridget, he's also trying to protect himself from Rachel, the funeral home bookkeeper. A middle-aged bachelor, he's attracted to her but obviously afraid of the committment she apparently wants. The star of the show? Mac's Irish Wolfhound, Whiskey--her picture attracted me to the book in the first place, but now I'm looking forward to reading more about Whiskey, Mac--and maybe Rachel.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe second novel is just as good as the first. If you like Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, you will enjoy Mac Sullivan. He's a character, but he's an experienced detective. The people around him are like a family and some are interesting characters too--like JJ and Edgar. I really like this series and hope you do too.
