Ontario Musician's 'Christmas To Me' Song Lashes Out At Political Correctness

Canadian Christmas Song Lashes Out At Political Correctness

A musician from Colbourne, Ontario has decided to pen a song about Christmas that demonstrates his displeasure for what he feels is an overly sensitive, politically-correct society.

The National Post says singer-songwriter Don Murdock wrote "Christmas To Me" to state his annoyance. "Politicians will try to tell us, take Christ out of the day / to hide all the symbols, we used to celebrate / they say it might offend, those who don't believe / let me tell you Mister, that you're offending me," he sings in the country song.

Murdock -- who co-wrote the song with Brian Dolph -- says he grew up singing Christmas carols door-to-door but saw that tradition being eroded. "People are wanting to take our traditions away," he told the Post. "We (Murdock and Dolph) both 100% agreed with the principles behind the song -- why does everything have to be, like we say in the song, politically correct? I've got no problem respecting everyone else's opinion. Why can't everyone respect mine?"

When asked about Christmas excluding some social groups and demographics, Murdock says the changes have more to do with politicians. "Canada welcomes everyone and I agree totally with that, but I'm just feeling 'Are we trying to win votes here or can we not just say this is a holiday we've had in this country, like, forever, why do we have to change it?"

The musician says the song has received a good response so far but Murdock is trying to get it on radio stations. The song is also available through his official web site.

Murdock is not alone is defending the so-called War on Christmas, as Sarah Palin herself is releasing a book on the topic called "Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas."

"Christmas is under attack," she reportedly told the Des Moines Register. "I say in a very jolly Christmasy way: 'Enough is enough,'" she said. "Enough is enough of this politically correct police out there that is acting to erode our freedom to celebrate and exercise our faith."

On the other side of the politically correct Christmas coin, Hallmark is issuing merchandise with the word "gay" removed from a lyric in "Deck The Halls" found on the company's "Holiday Sweater" ornament. CNN reported the company changed the word from "gay" to "fun" as "gay" has "multiple meanings, which we thought could leave our intent open to misinterpretation."
