Furry Nation: The True Story of America's Most Misunderstood Subculture Paperback – Illustrated, October 10, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Furry fandom is a recent phenomenon, but anthropomorphism is an instinct hard-wired into the human mind: the desire to see animals on an equal footing with people. It's existed since the beginning of time in prehistoric cave paintings, ancient gods, and tribal rituals. It lives on today--not just in the sports mascots and cartoon characters we see everywhere, but in stage plays, art galleries, serious literature, performance art--and among furry fans who bring their make-believe characters to life digitally, on paper, or in the carefully crafted fursuits they wear to become the animals of their imagination.
In Furry Nation, author Joe Strike shares the very human story of the people who created furry fandom, the many forms it takes--from the joyfully public to the deeply personal-- and how Furry transformed his own life.

Review
"Joe Strike has been in furry fandom for over 25 years, and he knows it in depth. I am glad he has taken the time to get the history of furry right in Furry Nation." --Fred Patten, a founding father of furry fandom ― Reviews
"As an outsider of this community, I was entertained and enlightened by Furry Nation. Thanks to Strike's years of dedication and reporting, I came to better understand and appreciate the depth and breadth of this artistic and creative community. Furs will be thrilled with an accurate, positive portrayal of their subculture by one of their own and regular humanoids like me will be treated to a colorful history of a community unlike any other." --Nicole Guappone, sex writer and essayist previously published by The Rumpus, Glamour, and others ― Reviews
"A lively and personal account of this new evolving species." --Thomas Thwaites, author of GoatMan: How I Took a Holiday from Being Human ― Reviews
"This is the most comprehensive history of Furry Fandom that has ever been written. Painstakingly researched, it follows the evolution of Mankind's fascination with anthropomorphics from its earliest roots in history (and pre-history) to the worldwide phenomenon that we know today. Joe combines his own recollections with those of dozens of other "greymuzzles" to tell the story of how a ragtag bunch of special interest groups unwittingly awakened millions of people to their own inner animals. This is indeed a remarkable book about a remarkable fandom, lovingly assembled by a remarkable man - even if he did choose a picture that makes me look fat." --Dr. Samuel Conway a.k.a. "Uncle Kage", chairman of Anthrocon ― Reviews
"To stereotype all "furries" as sexual fetishists is to ignore the prevalence of anthropomorphic animals in human culture, from cave paintings to animated movies to graphic novels and newspaper comic strips. Furry Nation offers an honest, candid glimpse into all aspects of American furdom... Highly recommended." --Midwest Book Review ― Reviews

About the author

Joe Strike has been part of furry fandom since 1988 when he received a surprise invitation to something called a “furry party” being held at a Philadelphia sci-fi convention. The original “kid in a candy store,” Joe spent his formative years in his parents’ Brooklyn “sweet shop,” absorbing the comic books, cartoons, TV shows and sci-fi movies of the day. Joe’s articles on film, TV, animation and related topics have appeared in a variety of publications including the New York Daily News, Newsday and the New York Press. He has been a regular contributor to the entertainment industry website Animation World Network (awn.com) since 2000 and has interviewed countless cartoon luminaries including Hayao Miyazaki, John Lasseter, Brad Bird and Lauren Faust, creator of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic."
Joe served as a writer/producer of on-air promotional campaigns for Bravo and the Sci-Fi Channel, where he worked with talents like Stan Lee, Ralph Bakshi and the cast of "Mystery Science Theater 3000." He has scripted the Nick Jr. TV series "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!" and is the author of the kids’ comedy/adventure novel "The Incredible Hare."

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2017The strongest points to Furry Nation comes in its tackling of the fandom as a multifaceted community. The history itself will be as broad, much as the hydra has many heads and boils down to a giant beast. Instead of tackling just the history of Anthrocon, it touches on furry art, 80s zines, and classic meet ups. Each of these has a point and a focus that was certainly enlightening.
The book itself mostly avoids pseudoscience and instead focuses on personal accounts and documented events, which is thoroughly appreciated. Some touching on Jungian psychology aside (Better than Freud.) If you ever wanted to gain a better understanding of where these conventions came from this is the book.
Furries and their interaction in Hollywood is also a wonderful glimpse behind certain scenes, particularly in the advent of Zootopia. For those of us who blame Lion King and Who Framed Rodger Rabbit for affecting their childhood, this would also be an interesting read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2017Really all I heard about the book before I got it, that it had to so with related to the history of the furry fandom. But what I saw when I started to read his book was well beyond what I expected. Yes you got furry history and really a lot of stuff I didn't know and I been in the fandom for more than 10 years. But loads of personal stories I can't really pick one that I like more as all of them are excellent. I really think Joe Strike has done an excellent job, they say the furry fandom is very unique. But I will go as far as to say well done Joe Strike.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2021I really liked the book overall, giving me some insight that even I, a 25-year veteran of Furry fandom, didn't know about, covering the earliest fanzines, APAs and meets, then on up through Confurence, the internet's effect on fandom, backlash from inside and out, and where it may all be going in the future. I did discuss this with an even longer veteran in fandom who didn't care for it, saying it was "too West-Coast biased", not mentioning enough of what he and others experienced in East Coast early fandom. Regardless, I think I can suggest it, despite its flaws. It's a fairly good overview of Furrydom.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2017This is not a collection of furry stories, it is a history of furry fandom.
One that is understood, it is a very oood and detailed history, decently written, maybe not covering every detail, but getting many more of them.
It has the major players in furry history.
I learned from it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018I liked the book, but it tends to drawl on about "the good old days" and the authors life story in the fandom with the info woven in.
It's a good book but I found myself skipping pages because I just wanted him to wrap up what ever he was talking about.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2017I think Joe did a thorough job of research, he has an even handed presentation, and engaging writing style. He has woven information on the history of the fandom with biographical sketches of various fandom members. I know that Joe was very thorough with his interview processes with me and as I read that section of the book, his accuracy is commendable. I would not necessarily say that about some of many journalists to whom I have provided research based information on the furry fandom. Truth be toldI have not finished reading the book yet, update to follow in a week or so..
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2019Well written- great referencing,. Many aspects of the Fandom are looked at. From where it starts, to where it maybe heading. I am now more comfortable in my suit/partial than before. Being new to fursuiting many questions have been answered for me. For those who have been around for "ever" many of the people you have come to know and love. Have their story told on how they became to where they are now.. Enjoy
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2018This book takes an interesting look into a fandom that is misunderstood and defines what, and why "Furries" are what they are and do what they do. The fandom is so conceptualized by bad press, haters and television shows (i.e. CSI). This book gives you an in depth look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bible for furries
Even though it's based in the United States, this book is the Bible of the furry fandom. Informative, complete, and very funny. If you're a furry, you need this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Furry in a Nutshell - Perfect Guide
This is actually the very first but best, long awaited compendium about the furry community, covering a wide range of basic knowlegde and information from its early beginnings to the present moment. It closed some essential gaps (even after being in for almost 10 years now) and managed to brought me back as an active member after leaving the fandom some years ago through opening my eyes and mind to the fact that there's still plenty of hope and creative space for the future while trying to crash and explain the major negative stereotypes we still suffer and need to fight off on a daily basis. Excellent work!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ni
