The Role of Decentralised Electricity and Storage Systems in Meeting East Africa`s Community Needs
The European Research Council-funded EVALUATE project, led by Professor Stefan Bouzarovski at the University of Manchester`s Department of Geography and the Manchester Urban Institute is organising a workshop in collaboration with Strathmore University through Strathmore Energy Research Centre, under the title of Energy, Electrification, Equity: the Role of Decentralised Electricity and Storage Systems in Meeting East Africa`s Community Needs.
The workshop is facilitated by Majd Jayyousi and Dr Neil Simcock and focuses on issues of electricity access among East African communities. We will have 20-30 participants from Kenyan community-based organisations, non-governmental organisations, businesses, government entities and academia working in the field of energy access and rural electrification.

Alice Amayo has over 15 years` experience in project management, moderation and facilitation. She has worked extensively with community groups and civil society organisations building their capacity to engage as stakeholders in public policy processes and with government in policy formulation and implementation. She currently works with GIZ as a Capacity Building Advisor in the project Promotion of Solar Hybrid Mini-grids in Kenya (ProSolar). The project is implemented together with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.
Geoffrey Ronoh is a Renewable Energy Enthusiast. He holds MSc Sustainable Energy degree from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, and BSc in Electrical Engineering degree from University of Nairobi, Kenya. His research interest comprise solar PV and solar thermal technologies. Presently, he is the Director of the Strathmore Energy Research Centre (SERC) and one of the founding consortium members of the Kenya Climate Innovation Centre hosted in Strathmore University. In Strathmore, Geoffrey was involved in developing the 600kW Solar PV project implemented in the University as well as in the establishment of the SERC solar training and testing lab. Geoffrey is also the co-founder of OFGEN Limited, a locally based solar project development entity focusing on the commercial and industrial market segments.
Jechoniah Kitala is a development expert with over 25 years of development practice. He is the Consultancy Manager and Head of Energy Programmes at Practical Action Eastern Africa Regional office. He has been involved in development and promotion of renewable energy technologies in East Africa through capacity building of actors, development of market systems and business models for renewable energy. Jechoniah is the currently part of a team providing technical assistance to mini-grid developers through the DFID/AFD Kenya Green Mini-grids Facility. Jechoniah holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics ( University of Nairobi) , a Masters of Arts in Economic Policy Management (University of Ghana) and a Diploma in Project Management and Administration.
Dr. Linda Davis serves as the Director of Partnerships at wPOWER Hub, where she directs efforts to build a global partnership promoting the central role that women must play in leading the adoption of clean cooking and lighting technologies to address both energy poverty and climate change. Previously, She was the former advisor to SmartCook Energy, a start-up company in Sub-Saharan Africa. She also worked as the Director of Biorefinery Enzymes at Verenium Corporation (now part of BASF) in San Diego, CA. Dr. Davis completed her PhD in Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Western Sydney. She also holds certificates in Petroleum Refining, Project Management, Finance and Accounting (Stanford University) and Designing Renewable Energy Systems (University of Nairobi).
Majd Jayyousi is a PhD Researcher at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on material and social dimensions of electricity access and storage in Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to joining the University of Manchester, she was a renewable energy analyst in the UAE Mission to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Majd also worked as a research engineer with the Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium (SBRC) at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology.
Neil Simcock is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Manchester, UK. His research expertise focuses on social and environmental justice, inequalities and marginality in the context of low-carbon energy transitions.
Rebekah Shirley is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) where she recently completed her doctoral studies in 2015. She previously obtained a MSc. Energy and Resources and a MSc. Civil Engineering at UC Berkeley in 2011. Her doctoral and postdoctoral research focuses on building integrated optimisation tools for energy systems planning in developing countries and emerging economies, with a focus on Southeast Asia. Rebekah is also currently the Director of Research at Power for All, a global education and advocacy initiative founded by energy access practitioners and implementers to advance renewable, decentralised solutions for universal energy access. Rebekah is a Visiting Scholar at Strathmore University, Nairobi Kenya.
Shashank has a total of 16 years of experience, out of which 11 years of entrepreneurial & consulting experience working in clean energy access space in India & East Africa. Currently, he is leading a team of consultants that provide pro-bono business advisory to clean energy access entrepreneurs on their business model, market strategy & fund-raising strategy. The team also provides transaction advisory (termsheet review, company valuation, cap table etc.) as well, as help companies on their pitch deck, business models and financial models. The team has supported a portfolio of 150+ SMEs in East Africa, who have managed to raise $95million in grant, equity & debt. He has an MBA from Oxford University.

Jacob Chepkwony is an Engineer with the Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, Directorate of Renewable Energy. He holds a B.Sc., Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Nairobi (UoN) and currently pursuing a M.Sc., Energy Technology at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT). He holds over nine (9) years` experience in Off-Grid Renewable Energy Technologies. He has been involved in Solar PV electrification of over 1,500 Public Facilities; Communities, Schools, Health Facilities, Administrative Offices and Solar Water Pumping in Arid & Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) Counties. He is currently engaged in the coordination, planning and development of the, World Bank funded, Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project for the Underserved (Marginalized) Counties (KOSAP). KOSAP plays an important role in complementing the National Grid in achievement of the Government of Kenya (GoK) ambitious target of universal access to modern, clean, affordable, competitively-priced, safe and secure energy to all Kenyans by the Year 2020.
Lydia is a gender and energy expert with over 18 years` experience in designing and implementing development strategies, programmes and projects. She has vast experience in household and institutional energy, conducting socio-economic studies, implementing women economic empowerment strategies, community mobilization, advocacy and project management. Lydia is experienced in establishing strategic partnerships at local and regional levels to strengthen uptake of appropriate energy technology options, gender mainstreaming and policy influencing. She is currently coordinating initiatives in Eastern Africa to strengthen women`s capacity to effectively participate in, and benefit from energy markets as actors and beneficiaries. She coordinated energy and gender advocacy work under SEforALL, mobilizing CSO input into the SE4forALL process, including support to the government to mainstream gender and pro-poor strategies and options in the key SEforALL outcome documents in Kenya. She is providing technical support in gender and social inclusion to the Green Mini-Grid Facility in Kenya and coordinates the focal point/secretariat for ENERGIA International Network in Kenya. She currently works for Practical Action Eastern Africa`s regional office as a Senior Gender and Energy Advisor.
Coordinating the POWERKIOSK (www.powerkiosk.eu) project at SKKL in Kenya, covering 40 E-HUBBs across limited and off-grid locations in Narok, Kajiado, Nakuru, Isiolo, and Samburu counties.
Victoria Chengo is a Research Assistant working in the Climate Resilient Economies Programme at the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS). She is currently working on the Transnational Climate Governance project with an aim to understand and map the extent and effectiveness of non-state climate action in Kenya and the Global South.
Waringa Mindo is a trained energy engineer who currently works with Equatorial Energies Ltd, a leading EPC company offering solutions in solar energy for the East African market. She has had experience in project management, trade promotion and strategic planning within the fields of infrastructure development and renewable energy. Her main interests lie in sustainability and innovation as a catalyst for development in emerging countries with a special focus on start-up enterprises. She holds an Msc. Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship from the University of Nottingham.
Catherine joined SunFunder in March 2017 from Old Mutual Securities in Nairobi. Originally from Nairobi, she previously worked as a senior analyst at Bloomberg LP in London, and at Devonshire Partners and the CFA Society of the UK. She has two masters degrees, from the University of Sheffield and the University of Bath, an Award in Financial Planning from the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and has completed the first part of Kenya`s CMA international certification for the capital markets industry, provided by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (UK).
Prof (Dr). Kowenje holds a PhD in Materials Sciences with Post-Doc in Chemical Systems engineering. Chrispin researches on catalysis materials for environmental and energy applications. He is the Department of Chemistry Chairman and immediate former director at Centre for research in Renewable energy at Maseno University. He sits at the Africa`s Future Earth and ICSU committees.
Michelle Sandhu is a Business Development Associate at Greenlight Planet. Her role is centered around the consumer finance channel, reaching out to different financial service providers across Africa to offer purchasing power through loans to underserved communities living off the grid.
I am a dedicated Operations Manager at Ubuntu Power Limited. I am an effective team leader who excels at using proven methods and cutting edge technology to cut costs, streamline operations and increase productivity. I am passionate about participatory development; reaching out to remote and unexploited areas and inspiring them to participate in development debates and decision-making that affects their bottom-line. Zachary is a sustainability practitioner at the Kenya Climate Innovation Center. He spends his time exploring the opportunities presented by sustainable development goals and developing innovative ways of utilizing them to achieve sustainable growth. SDG VII requires universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services by 2030. He is looking forward to engaging you in exploring the current barriers, drivers, and the regulatory framework necessary for implementing decentralized technologies in East Africa in order to achieve SDG Number VII.
Dan Mbingo has worked for Kenya Industrial Research & Development Institute (KIRDI), a state corporation under the ministry of Industrialization and Trade as an environment Research Scientist for 6 years. He has a degree in Environment Science from Moi University and also trained in Masters of Science degree in Energy Technologies from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. I am in the department of Research, Technology & Innovation and we are involved in multi displinary research aimed at uplifting SMEs and small businesses or organizations by efficient production technologies to reduce on raw material consumption and enhance products and by- products. We innovate technologies, do technology transfers and prototype. I am also involved as a team member in LCET program of UNIDO on localization of Ultra low head Microhydropower production pilot program in Busia, Kisumu, Tana River, Kirinyaga and Bomet counties, Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) program by Danish Royal Embassy for efficient use of raw materials and reduced energy use.
Peter Kairu Kanyingi is a Lecturer at Kenyatta University under the Department of Energy Technology. He holds a B.Sc. in Energy Engineering from Kenyatta University and a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a Major in Power Systems and its Automation. He is a highly skilled renewable energy expert with rich expertise in power systems and micro-grid design, simulation, analysis and optimization. He also possess great knowledge and skills on the design of wind power systems, solar PV systems and statistical modeling for use in the analysis of power systems with huge integration of renewable energy with a bias on modeling of complex dependence and uncertainties in renewable energy sources.
Jackline holds a BSc. Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree (Hons) from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and is also a registered T3 solar PV technician by ERC. She has over 6 years work experience in Water, Renewable Energy, Telecommunications and Insurance sectors. She is currently Business Development Manager at SolarGen Technologies Ltd. The most recent being in a water and renewable energy company where she held various roles in technical sales, administrative and business development.
Harrison is a Development Manager for Virunga Power. He has over 10 years experience in renewable energy project development and engineering. He has served as a developer and consultant in the renewable energy space, having successfully guided several projects from inception to construction. Previously, he has advised various organisations including the World Bank, European and African government agencies and private companies in renewable and hydro development in East and Southern Africa. Harrison graduated with a BA in Civil Engineering from Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. Harrison speaks fluent English and Swahili.
Kariuki is an independent Project Developer at Portable Green Power biased towards the circular economy, renewable energy technologies and sustainability subjects. He previously distributed portable solar PV systems (lamps, traveling gadgets and solar home systems). He holds Msc. Environmental & Energy Management (University of Twente, Netherlands) and BA Industrial Design (UoN, Kenya). Kariuki aspires to interrogate Sustainable Energy For All, from theory to practice through energy recovery by sealing material/energy loops especially at the BoP.
Bernard Willis Makokha holds an MSc (Energy, Climate change and Sustainable Development) from De Montfort University, Leicester- United Kingdom and is a certified Energy Auditor (Class A) He is employed at K.I.R.D.I as a Research Scientist and also Head of the Energy Division. He has over 20 years of experience in the energy sectors ranging from; designing, installing and commissioning various energy projects in Kenya; conducting, participating and/or organizing energy management, energy policy formulation, technology brokering and/or energy standards dialogue, seminars and/or workshops both in and outside the country; actively contributing to the formulation and implementation of energy policy education in Kenya Mr. Willis has been effectively involved in the past in pioneering and teaching energy management and energy auditing in the Kenyan education Sector.
Elizabeth is an industrious lady who works in the Monitoring and Evaluation department. She keeps track of KCIC’s results against its performance framework. She is passionate about global environmental topics such as natural resources management, sustainable development and addressing climate change issues, which motivated her to pursue BA in Geography at University of Nairobi; and currently taking MA in Environmental, Planning and Management in University of Nairobi. She also holds a Diploma in Leadership and Management from Strathmore University. What makes Elizabeth energized is the aroma of coffee and chocolates!
