Quick draw lands Lascassas woman in jail

RCSO

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A Rutherford County woman has been arrested after police says she was a little too quick to draw a handgun.

Murfreesboro Police say they were called to the Walmart on Old Fort Parkway Friday afternoon after customers reported someone in the parking lot with a gun.

Police say when they arrived 67-year-old Lascassas resident Sherry L. McLain told them a black male had approached her in a threatening manner and that she had pulled a handgun from her purse in response.

Officers then spoke to the man in question, 52-year-old Murrfeesboro resident James Crutchfield. Crutchfield told officers he’d just bought cigarettes, but forgot to buy a lighter. When he passed McLain in the parking lot, he stopped to ask if she had a light. He says McClain immediately drew a gun and aimed it at him.

Police say a witness in the parking lot and the store’s video surveillance footage confirmed that Crutchfield never approached McClain and that she drew her weapon within two seconds of his speaking to her.

Sherry McClian was arrested on charges of Aggravated Assault and Reckless Endangerment. She was booked into the Rutherford County Jail on a $15,000 bond and will make an initial appearance in General Sessions Court on January 7, 2016.
