Lakota Moon Rising (Lakota Series) Kindle Edition
Julia, a mixed-race woman, born into slavery in Louisiana escapes brutal plantation life only to be captured by the Comanche. She holds tight to her dream of Canada and freedom as she unwillingly witnesses the acts of savagery the Indians perpetrate against the whites.
She is reluctantly drawn to a visiting Sioux warrior, Sunkawakan. The newcomer is both gentle and savage, compassionate and ruthless. Falling in love with him will mean an end to her dreams of freedom in the North.
In a vision, Sunkawakan Iyopeya saw white soldiers corral his people like cattle onto barren land. He visits the Cheyenne to convince them to band with him and his tribe, the Lakota Sioux, against the soldiers at Fort Laramie who would destroy the Indian way of life. While in the village, he meets beautiful but fiercely independent Julia. He is torn between his attraction to her and his duty to his people.
Torn between love and duty, pride and an intense need, they must both decide if this new love is worth the change in their destiny.
A different and intense historical romance. Read Lakota Moon Rising today.
This is a prequel to Lakota Dreaming and Lakota Blood Moon.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2015Although I find most books regarding slavery too painful, this book kept me captivated and it was hard to stop reading. The love story between Julia and Sunkawakan was developed very well. I enjoyed reading about their trek through the snow. Sunkawakan was one of my favorite characters in the book. He tried to correct some of the wrongs the US did to the Indians. The book ended on a hopeful note and did not reveal Julia’s true destiny. I read Lakota Dreaming first. I disliked the fact that none of the women in the Indian camp befriended Julia. Such a sad position for Julia.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2019This story was recommended to me and I'm happy I took the suggestion. This book read like an old western. The scenes were that vivid. Loved both the heroine and the hero, the secondary characters not so much but you're not supposed to because this is a brutal time period the book is set in.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2016Julia and Sunkawakan Iyopeya's story is real, truthful, honest, and sensual. The author clearly knows her stuff - Lakota Moon Rising is incredibly well-researched without resorting to any info dumps or unnecessary telling.
But it's the love story that drew me in and made me stay up way too late reading this non-traditional and yet still very sensual romance. It's like an amazing historical fiction on A&E combined with a very contemporary understanding of a woman's fight for justice and her place in a land that doesn't value her or her contributions. And while I cried over Julia's plight and ached for a people who lived long ago, we still see echoes of her story in today's headlines, which is why the story is still relevant.
With her honest and beautiful story-telling that never sugarcoats and always forces her characters to really think about their decisions, Ms. Gillam invites us in to a world we wouldn't otherwise have visited, and wanted to explore even more. (When is the sequel??!!!)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2019I really liked this book. It was good to see a interracial couple between a Black women of mixed race be with a native Indian in a romance. It is true what the other reviewer wrote, this type of romane is not written enough. But it happened back then and they can't say it didn't...because some of have Indian in us. I appreciate the Author writing this story. I couldn't give the book a 5 because....towards the end of the book. I felt the Author give up on the characters, the story and left us hanging. I felt I wanted to finish the story for her. I hope the Author will write a book 2!!! She's owns to the characters and readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2015I just started reading Lakota Moon Rising. Had trouble putting it down--had my heart racing. It covers slavery in the south and
moves to Native American treatment by the United States. Enjoying this, even though reading about the abusive treatment of
slaves and the Indian nations, is difficult, but this book moves as rapidly as my heart beats!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2015I lost sleep with this book and read it in one sitting. Thing is, I'm not much of a historical romance reader, but the story was so compelling. I loved the heroine, Julia. She had such a hard life, but despite the constant obstacles thrown her way, her strength and resilience to become a free woman pushed her through. I also enjoyed the progression of the relationship between her and Sunkawakan Iyopeya. There was an immediate chemistry but she was still determined to follow her dreams. The author also did an excellent job in connecting the hero and heroine, despite the language and cultural barriers. If you looking for a different and intense historical romance, read Lakota Moon Rising.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2017This novel struck all the right cords for my historical reader heart. Some hard scenes, which I am sure were accurate for the time, but well written and engaging overall. I really enjoyed the heroine's journey. Both to escape slavery and internally to learn to trust others. Really well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story
Thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a runaway slave and indigenous son. Plenty of action, suspense, with a little romance. There were a couple times the story veered towards disbelief, but the way in which the plot unfolded kept my attention and I became immersed in what was happening all over again.
Captivating and highly recommend for historical fiction fans.
