***Update: this gauge is still going strong! Still very happy with this purchase. 👍*** I bought this steam gauge for an old 1970's Sears (avocado green) canner Model#620.51020 found at a yard sale. Brand New still in the box for $3.00. love at first site!!. Took it to my extension office and found out it was in perfect condition....But the gauge was 3 pounds off. Bought the new one and had it tested. New Gauge tested and found registering PERFECT pressure. When I tried to install the new gauge it didn’t fit. It seemed to need a rubber washer and nut. The gauge I had taken off was a bit bigger than the new one. I was real bummed about it. My husband looked all over the planet for a nut that would fit the threads on the gauge, but we couldn’t find anything that would fit. I thought I would have to recycle my pretty little canner. But when we thought all was lost, I very carefully took off the VENT PIPE and switched it to the hole I took the gauge off of. The vent pipe fit fine. Then I put the new gauge into the hole the vent pipe came out of...... it fit!!!! It fit like a glove!!! I was so happy! Canned a canner full of pint jars without any leaks or losing pressure. I think the original owner of the canner upon assembling the canner put the vent pipe in the wrong hole. So to all of you having the same problem with the gauge not fitting..... try switching the vent pipe to the other side. Its worth a try. Happy Canning and God Bless our Beautiful America!!

Having read many of the reviews already left here, I went into the replacement prepared. I've had my Presto #7 canner since 1981 when I picked it up at a flea market. It still had the original gauge which I'd just had tested and was off by 3 lbs. I used a small adjustable wrench to remove the gauge, then brushed out the threads in the lid. As others mentioned, the new gauge has different threading than the old gauge. Next up: removing the steam vent with the adjustable wrench and seeing if it fit where the gauge had been, then trying the gauge in the brushed-out vent hole. For anyone struggling with the threading, I suggest a tiny bit of petroleum jelly dabbed around the threads. Anyway, the steam vent snugged down where the original gauge had been and the new gauge went in where the steam vent had been.

As far as the new gauge being straight whereas the original had been angled, if you tighten down the gauge and finish up with it pointing toward the center, it will face forward (assuming the placement is the same as on my canner - see photos) and be easy to read due to the curvature of the lid. That also happens to be the sweet spot at which everything is tightened down to where it should be. I tested it out after assembling it and had no steam leakage. It was also *very* nice to have the steam vent in the front since on my canner, there's some fiddling that has to be done with it after 10 minutes of steam having been vented and I've never liked having to reach over the pot to do so.
I'll update after I have the pressure tested for accuracy.
