Important Information
• Your foster pet could require some rehabilitation as they may have been through some traumatic events including losing someone they love, abuse, neglect, or simply being in a stressful environment if they have had to fend for themselves as strays. Sometimes all this means is a little love. Other times, it may require some teaching and socialization or potty training.
• While we try to test the temperaments of all our foster dogs and cats, we cannot promise that everything is 100% as we say it will be. Animals react differently in different environments. Typically they do better out of the shelter, but please be aware that they may react differently in your home environment.
• Please understand a little bit about canine and feline nature. Animals cannot be thrown into a home together and immediately be friends. Some may adapt to this, but most need a slow, patient, and understanding introduction. When introducing dogs It is best to attempt this on neutral ground so one dog does not feel like he is “defending territory.” Sometimes animals, like people, have different personalities and just do not get along particularly well.
• Some dogs feel the need to protect their possessions. Please keep this in mind when feeding a dog or giving them toys to play with.
• Please be aware that not all animals like to be “hugged and kissed” right away. There is no reason to fear the foster pet, but please approach the dog ( or cat) in a non-threatening way until they become used to their environment. This could otherwise result in fearful behavior from the foster pet including snapping, barking, scratching and possibly biting.
• While the volunteers do their best to place foster pets in appropriate foster homes (ie. an especially problematic dog would go to an experienced foster) we again cannot make promises regarding the animal's behavior. Operation Underdog and its members cannot accept responsibility if the foster animal damages or injures individuals and/or possessions while in your care as a foster pet parent.
• Fostering should be a fun, rewarding experience. It may cause extra work for you, but please recognize the benefit of saving a life and all the fun you will have with extra play time!
• If the foster pet shows any signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, etc.) PLEASE LET A VOLUNTEER KNOW IMMEDIATELY!! We do not want to delay treatment if necessary.
• Sometimes dogs and cats can escape their means of confinement. This can happen to anyone, even meticulous and careful people. If this should happen to you, contact Operation Underdog immediately!! Do not hesitate to call right away so that we can assist in the recovery of the animal! Under no circumstances should any foster dog be trusted to be loose without being tethered by a leash or confined in a kennel or fenced yard. They should be observed initially to ensure that the confinement is appropriate for that animal, as many can be escape artists! We just need to do our best to ensure the dog is safe! Foster cats need to be contained in a home at all times due to the high probably of escape if allowed outdoors. If you choose not to observe these practices and the animal is lost, you will be responsible for reimbursing the rescue for any expense that they are out.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: By signing below (including electronic signature), I certify that I understand that fostering a dog or puppy is a serious responsibility. A dog makes considerable demands on your time and resources. All dogs require regular medical care. Some dogs require special food or medications. A foster dog may expose family pets to illness such as kennel cough and if the family pet becomes ill, the owner will be responsible for veterinary expenses. If another foster is brought into the home, the Operation Underdog foster must be relinquished, prior to this happening, for safety reasons. As a foster parent, I understand that I will be responsible for food expenses. I also understand that I will be responsible for travel expenses (to and from the vet, as well as meeting for transport if applicable and occasional adoption events.) All other financial responsibility falls to the organization that rescued my foster pet. I understand that the animal that I am fostering is the property of either the local shelter, Operation Underdog, or another rescue organization. I understand that the suitability and placement of the animal (s) in an adoptive home is at the discretion of representatives of Operation Underdog or their rescue partners. Fostering an animal does not guarantee that the animal will remain in my home if I express interest in adoption and under no circumstances can the animal be given to another individual while in my care.
